Second Life - Evan - 08-15-2007

Im assuming everyone knows what Second Life is.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://secondlife.com/">http://secondlife.com/</a><!-- m -->
It took me about 2 minutes to realize how much of a colossal waste of time it would be.
However, some people take it really seriously. Like more seriuosly than Kaan takes WoW Wink
Not surprising really, but THIS I cant quite wrap my head around

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.wired.com/gaming/virtualworlds/news/2007/08/virtual_bank">http://www.wired.com/gaming/virtualworl ... rtual_bank</a><!-- m -->
"The recent collapse of Ginko Financial, a "virtual investment bank" in Second Life, has spurred calls for more oversight, transparency and accountability, especially when it comes to business practices in the metaverse."

heh, I signed up for an account maybe 6mo ago, took me maybe 2 hours to figure it out, so you beat me.

I saw that article though, funny stuff.

Did you hear about the "rape" case that UK police were investigating a few months ago? I never heard a follow up, I sure hope that was bullshit.

I mean, come on.

WTF? so basically, these people suck in real life so they created a virtual world to live in so they suck less? And now they are mad because a non existent bank has closed down and stolen their nonexistent money?

I think the money is real though.

- Goodspeed - 08-15-2007

Some people need to go here more often...

well, you 'pay' for your eMoney, so they did actually loose money (i think?)

if you suck in real life, you probably suck in eLife too

Thats so sad its funny. Imagine, you could've invested that money in real life and made some more!

- Mike - 08-15-2007

wow. just, wow.

Wasn't there some chick on that game to be the first person to become a virtual millionaire... in that, her land holdings and cash assets in that game, if someone actually bought them for real money, would make her over a million dollars.

I'd believe it. I mean, I sold two Everquest accounts a few years ago for a total of $800 bucks.

- HAULN-SS - 08-15-2007

man, I used to rape everyone in quake2 and cs

- Ryan T - 08-15-2007

I got a credit for a class for learning how to use second life. That was my 'independent study' and I acted as the T/A for one of my professors who held her office hours and some lectures from inside SL.

- BLINGMW - 08-15-2007

It does at least raise some interesting questions for me though. Let's say, in 20 or so years, there are people choosing to live in virtual worlds 100% of the time. Completely immersed, Matrix style. Either just because it's fun, economical (cheaper to live in tub of goo hooked to tubes rather than buying a house?), or they're ugly, disabled, old, whatever. However, it turns out, it's ok to get shot or run over, beat up, you just laugh it off. Why bother simulating physical pain, no-one would want that.

But there would still need to be some rule-making and enforcing done. I mean, if you locked someone in their house and wouldn't let them out, or stole from someone, or exploited the "world", that would still be bad. What you'd call an admin today... would really be a cop wouldn't he? And then there'd be a court? Jail?

Would the punishment then be real or virtual? It would seem that SL and following "games" that bring us closer to this future would set the standard for how laws are interpreted.

- WRXtranceformed - 08-15-2007

Yeah, it would be like Judge Dredd where nobody has real sex anymore, they put on helmets and bang in each others' brains!

Demolition Man.

But easy mistake to make.

- WRXtranceformed - 08-15-2007

Oh you know what, you're right ha ha.
I was close with the Stallone.

how do you know we're not already participants in such a thing? or that whoever is controlling us is not a participant of someone else's?

MATRIX!

Nah, an admin would be like, god, moderators would be the cops/judges, jail would be a 'ban' Smile
