Finished in Monterey - KPWSerpiente - 07-10-2007 My year here in Monterey is over. I have finished the Defense Language Institute's basic Urdu course and scored well enough on the DLPT5 Constructed Response test to be considered proficient enough in the language to be of some benefit. For any of the noobs who don't know me or for anyone who hasn't bothered to ask where I've been this past year and a half the answer is in the USAF. I graduate on Thurs and by this time next week I'll be on my way to Texas for crypto school and after that survival school and after that airborne training and after that?? That's pretty much it. I hope to return to NoVa again some day. -T - Mike - 07-10-2007 cool shit, dude... you're gonna get to see the world for "free" congrats on graduating!

My grandfather used to teach at DLI many years ago... Why'd you choose Urdu? - JackoliciousLegs - 07-10-2007 When do you leave Monterey? I'm in Santa Cruz for the week. Let's chiiiilll... Shoot me a pm. - KPWSerpiente - 07-10-2007 Quote:Why'd you choose Urdu? Why would you think I got a choice? Thanks everyone for the support. -T - John - 07-10-2007 KPWSerpiente Wrote:Why would you think I got a choice? Most people I know who went through DLI had a choice - but then again, most went in for specific programs (Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, or Korean). - Feersty - 07-10-2007 Congrats Travis. A1C now or SrA? - KPWSerpiente - 07-10-2007 I've been an A1C since I got in. Won't change for another year I think. Quote:Most people I know who went through DLI had a choice - but then again, most went in for specific programs (Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, or Korean). I find it hard to respond to this without coming off as a dick (sorry about that) but the majority of people out here are first term Airmen and they are not given a choice so I don't know who you know or what you've heard but the needs of the military always outweigh the needs of the individual. Now I was given a little list in which I could rank my top choices in case their needs did happen to coincide with my dreams but it didn't have a few of the languages taught here on it including Urdu. I think I put Farsi, Russian and Arabic down as my top three. -T - John - 07-11-2007 KPWSerpiente Wrote:I find it hard to respond to this without coming off as a dick (sorry about that) but the majority of people out here are first term Airmen and they are not given a choice so I don't know who you know or what you've heard but the needs of the military always outweigh the needs of the individual. I simply asked why you chose Urdu - I didn't realize at the time that you didn't get to choose it. All the individuals that I knew that went through it (about 8 in all) were all Intel with the exception of two - in various services - but went through it prior to 2004. Anyways, good luck in the rest of your training. Any idea where you're going to be stationed? |
