Cordless Electric Impact wrenches - Andy - 06-19-2007
My Pepboys Goodyear racing electric impact took a dump on me today. I bought for my b-day on 12/21/06. It fell 2 days short of six months. It was used for long periods of time and held up well. I noticed that the battery stopped holding it's charge recently and today, it not worky.
What are the rest of you guys using? I don't want to spend more than a hundred.

Dewalt 18v, but that's over your $100 budget. Look at it this way, you _could_ buy the cheaper ones every year or so for $100 or you can just get the good one off the bat and be done with it, sort of like those HF 'racing' jacks. I hear they have a 24 and 32 volt version now as well, enough to rip the lugs off a mac truck!

longacre has one out now, but more importantly, you can find the same unit that longacre re-badges on ebay for about $100. thats what I would go with.
dissapointing about the pep boys unit, i was under the impression that they were pretty solid. My discontinued HF unit has been going strong for 3 years or so, and I even found a new battery for it.

worked ok so far. i bought it for the 300ft/lbs torque rating, but i feel like it puts out less than that. but it was cheap and comes with a nifty looking, but generally useless jackhammer handle.

My HF one took a dump some time last year - not sure if I can fix it or not, I need to take it apart and see what I can do with it. It was 3 years old, so it was $$ well spent. If I cant fix it, I've got 2 batteries one of y'all can have.
I dont like the Dewalt impact guns at all - they've got great power and battery life, but they have a spring loaded ball in the socket chock that makes it impossible to get sockets off without using a little punch to press the ball in.

HF has a new 19.2 out. Are your old batts compatible with the new one?

I'll check out the generic ebay one but as of now, I'm going to go back to PB and see if they'll hook it up with another one.

i call dibzzzzzz on the other battery from RJ. my HF impact gun isnt great, but it gets the job done. for $75 i think it was well worth it. its been about 2 years or so and hasnt died yet. the only thing thats annoying about it is that when you're cracking away at something, the battery can come loose and pop off the electrodes which makes it stop working. i can usually position my knee to keep the battery in place when changing wheels though.
and my HF "racing" jack i've had for even longer and it still works fine. i've had to bleed it once or twice and put some fresh hydraulic fluid in there but it still lifts fine. that was about $100 for me like 3 or 4 years ago. i had that shit when i still had the integra

There's a website that can basically build you any battery pack you want, or sell you the cells you need to build it yourself. All those battery packs are is C size NiMH batterys, pack is probably 800-1000mah and you could double that with modern batteries. Hardest part is getting into the pack w/o destroying it, at least on the cheaper packs. I can take my Dewalt and Craftsman packs apart with nothing more than a screwdriver and a pry bar to get the glue free. If you want the web address let me know and I'll dig it up for you.

Nothing a grinder won't fix, or a little screwdriver in the case. I hated it at first too but now I actually like it, I really only use it for lugs and it keeps the socket firmly in place when pulling lugs off the wheels.

i've been more than happy with my HF impact... probably 3 years of use now without failing. it's not the super-cheap one, but not the expensive one either.

I had heard great things about the HF impact so I asked for that for Christmas a couple years ago. Dad got a hook-up through a vendor at work and got me a DeWalt instead. It definitely rocks, but that spring pin blows a fat one. Definitely might have to hit it with a grinder just to bring it down a little, but I really only use it for the wheels at a track event, so no biggie.
If you can find a used one of these on Ebay, that is probably the best way to go.

On another note, Pepboys has the Aluminum flat bottom jackstands for 22.99 if you bring in the flier. They're normally 49.99 on northern tool.
