BMW 325i question - dagold - 06-07-2007
I know that several of you guys have BMWs so I am going to ask. I am looking at picking up a 92 BMW 325 with 138,00 miles at a great price. The catch is it has what I am thinking is a bad fuel filter, but want to run it past you guys. The car runs great at ideal but then falls on its face if you get on it or try to go above 55. The guy says it is allot worse since it got warm. I am thinking this sounds like something simple maybe a like an oldnot the fuel filter.
I am just wondering if anyone has seen something like this or has any quick suggestions

gets worse when warm...could be a coolant temperature sensor. it might think the car is really cold and tells the ECU to dump too much fuel in
edit: woops, i read "since it got warm" to "once it gets warm"....durr....oh well might be something to look into anyway.

Or a busted vanos unit, coils, lots of things that could be wrong.

Bad MAFS, is my guess. Could be coils, too. Coils or MAFS.
It's probably not VANOS because VANOS didn't come until 93.

I know I'm new around here, but I just wanted to put something in. If the car runs fine when its cold, but not when its warm, its a good chance the piston rings are shot. When the car is cold the sleeves are smaller and thus can make more compression, when its warm metal expands and then you loose compression. I'd do a leak down or compression test, this could be a serious problem.

Worn rings wont cause the car to fall flat on its face though, and BMW engines are really durable.

Made my 92 feel great and it was experiencing similar problems.
92's didn't have VANOS that I'm aware guys...?

Yeah it really seems like a sensor of some sort. Is there a simple way to pull codes from a 92 BMW?

Yeah, google it for specifics, but I think it's something like turn the key "ON" and floor the gas pedal 10 times within 7 seconds or something. The CEL will flash the codes. Just count, reference, and fix.
