Tyranny of the STUPID - white_2kgt - 03-08-2007

So I need a new web browser installed on my POS web browsing computer, all they have is IE and a (user installed) Netscape 7.1, recently netscape starting NOT displaying images (like the MM header) and it isn't downloading javascript, for whatever reason, I have no idea, and I refuse to use IE. So I submit a ticket on the 'other' computer to have my web browser updated to Firefox (which is 'allowed' software, we have this baseline of allowed software, don't get me started on that). I get an email back saying I have to 'request' it to be imported. :WTF: Imported? It's already on our 'other' side. Apparently to get software on the 'internet' side you have to request that software that's already been cleared on the 'other' side be RE-imported, burned to a CD, virus scanned (which is done by clicking on the McAfee icon in the lower right corner and clicking 'scan') burned to a CD then mailed to my location, so the tech can come and install it.

:jawdrop:

Who, in their fucking mind comes up with this procedure. Why can't the tech come, logon as Admin, SCAN the file that's ALREADY on my HD then install it? I know, that's to easy. Oh BTW the tech that would do the install sits about 30' from my desk, the one that has to mail me the CD is in another building about 2 miles away. I want to go over and punch this dude in the nuts so bad right now.

As of now, I've spent 30 minutes submitting tickets and talking to people JUST to start the process of getting a web browser installed on a computer. Got to love the government.

haha, yeah its that bad where i work too. we're actually not allowed to use firefox which pisses me off. theres a lot of assbackwards things that happen here which frustrate me to no end, so i feel your pain chad.

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

Hah. I have a better one Chad - I got a disk with my EPSQ on it, so while i'm sitting here in the TRC, I wanted to install it so I can fill all that out while at work - oops! I had to get a RFC to install their own software that they sent me on one of their own disks. I said fuck it and just installed it at home because that was going to be too much of a PITA

...all when you could have just used IE.

Ohhhh noooesssss..... not IEeeeeeeeee!1111112122ipodbbq!321

If FF is not integral to your job function you're the one wasting tax dollars with an unnecesasary process.

I did two internships in the Federal Government and I hated the broken ass processes they had. The culture really does foster underacheivers, no chance I'll ever work in the public sector again.

It's IE5, it don't work no more on 1/2 the websites I visit, so yea, kind of needed for me to visit the website that I do on a daily basis. This is a Win2k Computer...

Just throw it out the window right now and be done with it.

:?:

At my last Job I had about 8 production app servers running win2k server and never had an issue.

The knee-jerk "that shit sucks!" response is really stupid.

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

oh yeah - i have to retract my knee jerk, winME was worse than 2k..my bad .RJ, thanks for going internet police on me.

- .RJ - 03-08-2007

Has nothing to do with internet police, you dont think before you spout off a stupid ass post. Let me guess, you hate all things Microsoft?

- ScottyB - 03-08-2007

got to love corporate red tape

I was actually about to say the same thing. The NT based windows OS's (ok, after NT4) aren't bad. I mean, they aren't great, but they're fairly usable and fairly secure, a halfway decent balance between those to things. In any operating system you have to take one away to give the other. Win2K isn't so bad, you just have to know how to talk sweet to it.

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

Nope, I use Microsoft everything. There went that theory. And you're right, I didnt have to think - I've used it enough to know I dont like it. K thx.

- white_2kgt - 03-08-2007

Win2k was the first time M$ got an OS 'close' to right (however the command line limit is pissing me off ATM), seems like XP was the last time...

I'll take 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups) over ME, and 98SE(not regular 98) over both. 95 was ok, but still a 3.1 based POS and NT3.5/4, ugh, what a pain. I still have my NT4 disc somewhere...

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

I mostly used 95 until 2002 - it was pretty awesome. I made a jump to 98SE before I bought my laptop which came with XP pro on it in late 2004. I'd say 98SE was my favorite of all of them so far.

Win2k had all kinds of problems - not recognizing hardware, not recognizing processor speed, not recognizing how many procs were installed. And in my experience, networking was a nightmare usually.

Now we definitely know you're smoking the crack rock.

If I had a Win98 CD I would shit on it.

- HAULN-SS - 03-08-2007

well I don't know why.

are we talking about the same Win98 SE?

- CaptainHenreh - 03-08-2007

You know, everyone hates on "ME", but I had a laptop with ME on it and it worked fine. I mean, not better than 98SE, but not worse. I never understood the hatred towards ME. It could be worse...we could all be using MSBOB 2006
