The G60T Corrado; A story in the making. By popular demand. - 83Rabbit - 06-07-2004

Ok, well here goes at my attempt to document this cars progress as it gets underway.

I scooped up the car a week ago for my 94 jetta with 248k miles on it neuspeed/bilstein setup, TT cat back, k&n air filter, 0Z superT wheels and a few other things to make it a clean, comfy, fun ride. I had been planning all along since its purchase last year to eventually build it up to boost, however the mileage was a big nagging problem in the back of my mind to begin boosting it, despite the fact that the car ran FLAWLESSLY. So when I logged on to RichmondDubs.com one day to check the local posts I noticed an add for a 1990 G60T for 3250 or trade. I immediately got in contact with the guy and sent him pics of my car which he disregarded as a trade because of the milage. I test drove the car a few times and noticed quite a bit of problems (I would no way in hell have paid 3250 for it in this shape) for starters, the drivers side strut bearing was blown, the car was pissing oil out of the oil pressure switch, the exhaust had a leak and was obnoxiously loud, the car needed a rebar, core support and lights. Overall I offered a generous 450 plus my jetta for trade and showed up at his door telling him 'here just hop in, the jetta will suprise you, trust me'. So after taking him for a test drive he wants to do the trade immediately.
So here I am with this car

looks good so far. And here was the main problem area

And the boyricer interior, 10 horsepower for yellow trim!!!

Those pics were taken from the owner just before I bought it.

The day I bought it I called up my friend matt in Nova and he set me up with a corrado guy in PA who parts them out. I spent $425 and it got me a rebar, core support, clear turns, fogs, black (nonriced) vents, speaker trays guage bezzel, and door handles, along with a pass side window switch which was busted, and a few other odds and ends.
I immediately ran back to Richmond after picking the parts up and played some RTCW ET, and Diablo II to get pumped up for the long day ahead tomorrow of doing my entire front end work Big Grin
Sunday morning: hot as hell. I roll outta bed and grab the parts, scrub them down with 'Final Kleen' and spray the core support and rebar with a satin black krylon finish along with slapping POR15 on the bolt holes just to make sure this is a lasting repair.
After replacing the vents and guage surround first, I already had a feeling of happiness just seeing some of that yellow gone. And I began on pulling off the rebar. I read through the bently and I saw that the rebar bracket slides into the front frame rail and bolts to it with 2 bolts on each side. Simple enough, here I come bolts! I slide under the car, throw a socket on the bolt and turn *CCCRREEEEAAAAKKKKKKK* and it spins..... :x The welds on the back of both nuts on the left side of the inner frame rail had broken and the nut was spinning inside the rail.
Now it would be an easy fix... if I could get my rebar off. BUT NO! Its smashed in so bad I dont have access to the bolts which go in from the rear of the bar to meet the bracket.
With the drivers side off and fine I take a deep breath and decide to drill those bitches out. Head down to home depot, grab an air die grinder and bit set, and a set of titanium drill bits. I get back and drill away at the bolts from the front and get almost done with the first one. *snap* torque set too high on the drill and the brittle titanium bit snapped its tapping head off..... Oh well, I bought a whole set Big Grin On to a smaller one. And I drill away. After getting them drilled out I was able to throw a 17mm wrench inside the frame rail to hold the nuts while I got the bracket off.
Once the rebar was off I bent the brackets back to their stock form and began pulling the core support off. All bolts came off easily here and it was pretty much just a matter of finding out what was connected with what and disconnecting it. The new one bolted right into place and I was stoked, it finally started looking like a non-wrecked car.
Now after having sunburn on my neck from working all day I got to put the rebar in place and realize it was slightly concaved from a minor bumper to bumper hit it must have taken on the other car. This created a problem as it wouldnt curve out to meet the contour of the bumper or clear the core support which goes straight down the front of the car. So after putting it on a curb, having someone stand on the other side and jump up and down on it to pretty much sea-saw with it, it bent the way it was supposed to and I was able to bolt it up and throw the bumper on. Next went the grille and I finally had a complete and good front end Big Grin
Pics will be up in a bit once I can get to them and more full writeups as they come.

Nice. Ghetto-fab 0wnz.

- Mike - 06-07-2004

Me likey... You play D2? I just started again yesterday. We ought to rock it out Smile

- 83Rabbit - 06-07-2004

yea, Ive played since it came out. Took a 6 month break though after I got my 2 year old first account banned from botting
So now Im legit and have about 3 accounts packed with general and specialized PVM and PVP chars. If you need any gear, let me know. Ive got tons of spare stuff on mules 8)

- 83Rabbit - 06-07-2004

Oh and its LOD, not the regular classic D2.

Acct names are:

*Allwentbyebye
*Allwentbyebye2
*Allwentbyebye3

- Mike - 06-07-2004

Well yeah, no duh LOD. I played about 2 years ago and then quit until now. Heard the new patch was sweet so I decided to check it out. Guess my old chars are gone (lvl 80 and shizz). Just playing to get a hang of it right now w/ a skellimancer. No interest in twinking (thanks though) or making "specialized" chars right now.

My acct name is "bigcawk" :-P (don't ask). I'll be on tonight around 6.

Fan-freakin-tastic! I have a hard-on for corrados like you wouldn't believe. Erm...

Anyway, is it the stock motor or a ABA 2.0? Does it still have the Grenade, or does it already have a turbo? (from the piping, I'll assume it's a turbo?) If so, what turbo is on it? Does the spoiler work? And are you going to paint it?

[carl]
Freakin' awesome.

Its a brand new stock 1.8 PG block and G60 head. However I will be replacing it with an OBD1 ABA head soon enough. Its got the atp turbo kit which is a t3 unit, the largest which will fit back there without mutilating the firewall. Spoiler works great, comes up a bit before 45 though, around 39 is when it shoots up, oh well, more bling at less speed Tongue and yes, I plan on painting it. Im going to spray the front bumper in the comming weeks until I can get a place ready to strip the car and repaint it Audi Aviator Grey and throw some powdercoated black wheels on there.

- Chris - 06-08-2004

oh good choice on the color- that should look pretty stealth in a dark color and dark wheels...

in my lack of knowledge on the Corrado, I was wondering if its rear or front wheel drive?

- 83Rabbit - 06-08-2004

sadly they are FWD along with the other watercooled dubs before 4motion and the r32 was concieved Sad

- Dave - 06-08-2004

spoilers that move are neato! Why are you gonna change engines if there is nothing wrong with this one? (read: what is the difference)

- 83Rabbit - 06-08-2004

The 1.8 G60 head is pretty inefficient and flows poorly, air is drawn in and expelled on the same side of the head. The 2.0 OBD1 ABA head is an X-flow head and flows alot better than the 1.8 G60 head. That will be one of the later swaps though as Im not too concerned with undertaking any other major projects at this time. Just getting the car up and running flawlessly.

- Maengelito - 06-08-2004

if your brain werent rotted from the inside out by b00st, i'd suggest you challenge dave in the $2005 challenge. however, i don't blame you one bit for wanting to go turbo. keep us posted without taking all those pointless pics that RJ took (see advan sidewall, oil pan w/ beer, evan's mom, etc.)

- ScottyB - 06-08-2004

such a neat car, i love corrados. good going with the ATP turbo kit too, they make nice hardware for the dub community. i might go with some of their products if/when i aquire my dad's A4 when he gets rid of it. keep us updated, cool project!

i had no idea they had a pop up spoiler! chicks dig appendages that pop up 8)

- 83Rabbit - 06-08-2004
