can you rent a garage in northern va? - HAULN-SS - 03-02-2007

Does anyone know of any places that allow you to have a car in storage where you can work on it as well? These self-storage places rent really small places for cars, you can get them with a lot of SF, but they are like 10 x 30 instead of 15 x 20, or 20 x 20 or something mangeable.

when i looked for local places most of them didn't have power outlets and were around $200-$300/mo for a big enough one where you could store a car, and have enough room to work on them.

check around the local storage facilities. and ask about leases b/c alot of them are not month-by-month.

Yeah - I figured they wouldnt have power, which is another reason to not go with a storage places - although, a lot of "wrenching" doesnt NEED power - and if it was something to do long term, could always buy a generator. Also - I did see some that were like 3 - 400$ for like 15 x 25'....two car garage, if anyone might be interested in splitting one.

You need power because you will need lighting. Alot of storage places wont let you store cars in them (fuel = fire hazard).

If you play your cards right, maybe you could get a group of people to all combine rent, get a nicer place.

Maybe form a LLC. Julie and I have kicked around the idea a couple of times.

- G.Irish - 03-02-2007

You might be able to score a garage space at a house on craigslist, I know those show up on there from time to time. You could put up a want ad too.

- HAULN-SS - 03-02-2007

All the ones i've shown so far call them "one car garage" or "two car garage" or whatever. Or show a "visualization of the layout" which has a car in it. You dont think they'd at least have lights in them?

Please elaborate, that sounds and awful lot like an evil scheme

speaking of which, I have one that shall be coming to fruition in the next week...

rex: what do you mean get people to combine rent to get a nicer place? You're talking about like trying to rent out an ACTUAL garage building or something?

If you got enough people...yeah, why not?

I mean, if you're using a garage for wrenching...why not split it with people? I've done ZERO research on it, so it's probably not even feasible, but...I mean hey. It could be cool.

Sorry, I didn't read G's post.

Here's the idea:

Create an LLC, Say "Nova Mad Motorsports" (to avoid any tradmark issues with JMU...fuckers). Then have that corporation rent a garage space, and the corporation members pay their parts of the rent. I'm not sure if an LLC is the right organization, I'm just thinking of a legal, limited liability coalition. Have a garage schedule, put it on line, and give everyone "credits" based on their rent, so that one person isn't hogging the garage every time. You could put the schedule online.

Would it be tough? Sure. But my guess is with the right about of elbow grease, a *nice* garage could be sourced and used, for cheaper than someone's crappy one-car.

Renting/Leasing shop space is a logistical and legal nightmare.

Y'all have fun with that.

- HAULN-SS - 03-02-2007

Oh - no, that would be ok with me too, I said "Also - I did see some that were like 3 - 400$ for like 15 x 25'....two car garage, if anyone might be interested in splitting one."

So if anyone's even thinking about it, you should let me know

- HAULN-SS - 03-02-2007

and clearly I don't mean to do wrenching on other peoples cars for money - I'm not trying to go into business, just trying to get a nice place to work on my car without having to buy a house with a huge garage, or a retarded expensive townhouse iwht a 2-car

- G.Irish - 03-02-2007

Ah like a garage time share? That could work if the numbers were favorable.

Derek you could always get a regular storage space and use a portable generator for power. I kicked around the idea of getting a little Honda EU1000 for awhile, they're only about $600-800 on ebay.

Same here. I'm not trying to make a profit, I'm trying to avoid wrenching on my shit in either A: harrisonburg or B: a parking lot.

- Mike - 03-02-2007

there are quite a few garages for rent in people's homes. from when i was searching, i think they're 100-150/mo.

- white_2kgt - 03-02-2007

My garage is always for rent Smile

http://www.2kgt.com/needalift.php

I'd even offer a discount for MM people Smile. Long term storage is a no go though.

- BLINGMW - 03-02-2007

haha I didn't know you had a pricing schedule all worked out

anyone taken you up on it yet?

- Kaan - 03-02-2007

chad what were you welding last? your mig is set up hot and slow!

- HAULN-SS - 03-02-2007

G: A storage place would work - but unless you jump up to the "2 car garage" size they are only 10' wide it seems, which isnt any better than what I have now. So the ideal situation it seems is going to be either go in halfsies with someone on a "2 car garage" storage area - or rent out of someones house

Basically the situation I am in right now is I'm paying extra for exclusive use of the garage at my townhouse, but that isnt happeneing because the apartment complex is dicking me out of the 3rd parking spot we'd need (2 for me, one for roommate). They told me it would be no problem when I applied to live here and shit - so i thought htat meant they'd give me a parking sticker to the main parking lot - what it really means is "yeah, we have an abandoned lot down the road you can park your extra car in"....fucking shitheads. So I'm still dealign with that. I'm going to see if I can talk my roommate into splitting the rent more evenly, and finding somewhere else.
