Minor gripe (Apple) - BLINGMW - 12-29-2006

My sister gets an iPod Nano for Christmas. Of course, neither my mom, nor she checked the compatability specs, but WTF?

Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
iTunes 7 or later

The gripe? 10.3 came out late '03. Her 4yr old iBook has 10.2 on it. Guess what windoze it's compatible with?

Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
iTunes 7 or later

So it (and iTunes 7 as well) is compatible with windows back to late '98 when 2000 was released, but not with the earlier versions of OS 10? Ain't that some bullshit. Good way to force people to spend another $100 on an OS upgrade I guess! :?

A new product should be more compatible with your own products rather than a competitor's.... no? Hey... I wonder if she ran Virtual PC... that's just sad.

- CaptainHenreh - 12-29-2006

Wait, you mean Apple doesn't give out free OS Upgrades for all of it's customers for all time?

And free blowjobs from Swedish bikini models when you buy an iPod?

And to think, I was almost ready to buy an apple.

(Got a Sun instead.)

- BLINGMW - 12-29-2006

I think you're missing the point man. If I bought a PC 7 years ago, and it came with Windows 2000, I could have spent $0 since then and my brand new iPod would work with it. However, if I bought a Mac 4 years ago, and it came with OS 10.2, I would have to spend extra to get it up to date.

Nah dude, I got your point.

What appeared to be my astonished unbelief was actually scathing, dripping sarcasm! (I know, sometimes I am too subtle!) Apple is out to make money, just like every other corporation out there, and this does not surprise me in the least. Smile Everyone acts like Apple is some sort of noble Robin Hood, robbing from the rich and giving to the hipsters, with no ulterior motive in mind, while Microsoft is the Sheriff of Nottingham, trying his best to keep the peasants in line.

The truth is that they're both Prince John.

Whoo! More metaphors!

- BLINGMW - 12-29-2006

Yes yes your metaphors are wonderful.

I just remember the day when I could brag that my 5 year old mac was still quite useful and could run the latest whatever, while a 5 year old PC was, well, probably already in the trash.

I realize Apple needs to make $$ just like anyone else, but they used to do it on the backs of loyal fanboys like myself who felt confident that the extra penny spent on the system upfront would be 2 pennies saved when the system lasted longer. This just stood out in my mind as a clear example of "they don't make 'em like they used to!" Cry

i kind of feel your pain Chan. i use itunes as my music playing program of choice, and buy songs from the itunes store from time to time -- it's convenient. i just got a Sandisk MP3 player, and it will only take .mp3 files....not the strictly .mp4 stuff that the itunes music store sells. of course i now found out that the stuff i bought is locked when i went convert the .mp4's to .mp3's so i can play my music on my MP3 player.

of course, the ipod can play those .mp4's perfectly :?

so now i have to waste time searching the web for a program that can convert the locked files, so that i can play music that i paid my good money for on an MP3 player that isn't an ipod. argh!

- Mike - 12-29-2006

scotty, burn an audio cd and reimport that cd in mp3 format Smile

Good luck. The easiest way (especially if you only have a few songs) is to loop them into an analog input. But welcome to the wonderful world of DRM!

Word, I feel your pain. I'm not about to do the CD burn/import thing for a thousand songs though. That's like a million CD's, and, even worse, TONS of time.

- Mike - 12-29-2006

cd-rw

- ViPER1313 - 12-29-2006

There are ways around the DRM.....

- BLINGMW - 12-29-2006

I for one welcome out DRM overl...... ugh I can't say it!

- Kaan - 12-29-2006

Kaan Wrote:should have bought her a zune Wink

yeah, they didn't even bother making that Mac compatable for the maybe 3 drunken Mac users that would actually want a Zune

- Feersty - 12-29-2006

That sucks Chan, that is why windows is what I am going to stick with.

Feersty Wrote:that is why windows is what I am going to stick with.

is it really?

ps the zune sucks bad.

- Kaan - 12-29-2006

yeah it will blue screen a mac if you try to make the software work with the zune... so i've read... other than a lengthy update the other day... i have had no issues with it
