Weird to Save Videos from the Internet? - Apoc - 11-28-2006

I was talking to a co-worker and I send him a link of a program that will basically convert any video type into another video type. I use it mostly to convert flv (youtube) movies to something a little more WINAMP/WMP friendly. I'm not just talking about pr0n, but TV, race, movie clips you dig from youtube, google video and the like. He couldn't understand why I would want to keep anything locally.

Am I the only one?

edit: We're talking about at home computers, not work.

Me: i wouldn't like save any of your clips, that's just weird

Me: why?
Him: because it's already out there on the internet
Me: might not always be there... or you don't want to have to load it to view
Him: so you basically save porn
Him: creepy

Me: you don't?
Him: no
Me: wow... i think you're probably the first guy i've known that doesn't

Him: new shit all the time
Him: no need to save stuff
Him: evidence, etc.
Me: well maybe you want some of the old shit
Me: evidence? i'm not 13 on my parents computer
Him: so back to why you would want to convert it?
Me: to keep it!
Me: i think we just have to end this right here

I think that guy probably still thinks cameras will steal your soul or something. I mean what, does he not have any dvd's or cd's either? I save videos because I might want to watch them again without sitting around waiting for them to download, or worse yet, not being able to find them again.

Hell, I still can't find a good copy of the 2002 WRC music video (with the song from the Matrix).

i've always considered myself kind of weird, i have a habit of saving enormous amounts of crap off the internet and bittorrent. used to be really bad with P2P. i like being able to watch stuff that i find interesting whenever i want...end of story.

as an example, i have around 2 100-count spools of nothing but car related videos, wallpapers, movies, and cartoons. when i look at it i feel like i have no life whatsoever :thumbup:

I used to always save that type of stuff, maybe not 200 CDs worth, but a lot. Then I realized that I only went back and looked at them maybe 3-4 times. soo I just gave up on it. I haven't found anything that has been so amazing that I knew I would want to watch it again and again.

yeah see alot of it is when i went through my "pack rat" stage where i saved everything thinking i'd pull it back out all the time.

now i mostly only save movies or tv series like Top Gear or Initial D (JDM what), or if it's got some kind of info i can use.

i don't save short clips as they're readily available at all times, but longer stuff? you can bet i have a few gigs devoted.

andrew, werent you asking me about this very thing not too long ago? i agree with mikey though, i dont usually save anything thats short, but the larger files i like to save so i dont have to wait for it to download everytime i wanna watch it

I hoard everything I can get my hands on: 200+gb of random stuff on my computer now and 5 binders of DVDs, CDs, games, program downloads and other stuff. I'm just a pack rat when it comes to downloaded stuff.

I always save good videos on my hard drive, just so I don't have to try to find them again if I want to watch them. That's one of the reasons why I was so bummed when my old computer crashed... I lost a ton of cool car videos, funny shit, naked ex pics, and a bunch of Top Gear episodes (which I could get back, it's just a pain). If it's a good pr0n video? You bet I'm keeping it! =P
