More reason to hate the FIA - G.Irish - 11-03-2006
This season has been a tight, seesaw battle of what is the worst race sanctioning body in the world.
The FIA earns a few more points today because they are blocking Toro Rosso F1 drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi and American Scott Speed from participating in the SuperKarts USA Grand Nat'ls (in Vegas) because the event is not CIK sanctioned. CIK is the karting division of FIA and of course do not welcome competition from other karting sanctioning bodies. The FIA threatened to take Liuzzi and Speeds' F1 superlicenses away if they participated in the event, citing safety concerns but obviously that is hogwash because Liuzzi was just riding a Moto GP bike last week.

Can they even do that? I've never heard of extracurricular activities of a sanctioning body's members being regulated that way.. are they just making it up as they go along?

I don't know if it's a stipulation in their superlicense. It does sound like some BS they just made up but it wouldn't be the first time they pulled a rule out of their ass.
