video editing -- what do you use - ScottyB - 10-12-2006

well, i took a sweet drive up to the mountains last weekend and got a chance to test out my DIY in-car camera mount. i'm using the video function of my digital camera for now and it's doing OK. i want to compile the footage but windows movie maker isn't gonna cut it for what i'd like to try.

i'm so new to this that i'd like to start with a free or trial-period program that is user friendly. after that i'd be willing to buy a program.

also, what do you recommend for compressing videos? my first try ended up with a 3 minute video compilation being 52 megs. there's gotta be a way i can cut that down and not kill quality right?

lastly, my only experience thus far has been with 3 programs, all free:

- windows movie maker
- RAD video tools (mostly to convert the quicktime files my camera spits out into .avi files that most programs can deal with)
- WAX, just downloaded it and i can't figure out WTF, it's all hieroglyphics to me

any advice or directions to helpful tutorial sites would be appreciated.

I don't know much about video editing with Windows software, but I know for that platform Adobe and Sony both have some good software available.

About the size/quality issue, frame rate and audio quality have a lot to do with the final size...I personally can't offer much help on this matter though because I make everything as high quality as possible and just live with the big file size, I can't stand working on projects for a long time only to encode them with crappy quality. Encode your audio in the AAC format to help reduce size, its probably raw. Also try reducing your data rate, video size (320x240 etc). That should help

There are tons of sites and forums out there that offer help, look around and ask for advice, thats what I did (mainly on the apple.com forums) and got tons of excellent advice. Good luck and happy filming!

You are not going to find a GOOD and FREE video editing software. In the past I have used Adobe Premier, but for the cost associated it isn't worth it. Now I use Pinnacle Studio 9, it cost about $60 or so and works pretty well, the new version can do PIP and some other neat things. I have also used ULead Pro, but there's no way I'd pay for it. The only thing I like about ULead over Studio is the video editing window is much larger.

For encoding I use Windows Movie Maker, I know MAC users bitch but hey, they are cool and get do create neat slideshows and don't crash often, so it's a trade off. If you encode at 320x??? and cut the audio back you can make movies with decent quality and pretty workable file sizes. There's nothing that irrates me more than downloading a 100MB 3 minute video file, you are not Stephen Spielberg, so don't kid yourself.

I use Windows Movie Maker for almost everything. The only limit I have found is having multiple audio tracks. But for everything else, it's easy to use as most Microsoft products are, doesn't crash, can do 16x9, and is free.

When I had to do the different audio tracks, I used Ulead demo.

The only time I've ever tried to put a video together, I used iMovie on my old mac (the freezerbook). It worked flawlessly, and the end result was pretty decent considering my total lack of mad-tizzite MTV editing skillz.

These are the tools I use:

Capture: Windows Movie Maker. (Used to use premier but WMM is so darn easy) Capture to DV-AVI instead of WMV for full quality.

Crop, titling, editing: Adobe Premiere (Photoshop for titles). I think there is also a freeware tool that is comparable to premiere, Ive just never used it.

Encoding/Compressing: VirtualDub (free) using new Divx Pro codecs and audio in MP3. (Id like to start using h.264 encoding when more players start supporting it)

Im always very happy with the result. I get 25 minutes worth of full DV resolution (720x480) high quality ouput with professional quality titles and graphics with under 200mb file.

Ive used Pinnacle Studio 9 a bunch too, like chad said its about $60 and is pretty easy to use. I mean I dont know shit about video editing, and I picked up that program and could do things right away. I dont know anything about any of the other programs though.

FYI, that is the 'basic' version. For some of the effects and stuff like PIP you will need to purchase that seperate. Once that version is installed you can 'upgrade' it on the spot within the software to include many of the other features. However, for that price it is 100% worth it if all you have is Windows Movie Maker. The abilty to create DVD menus alone would be worth it to me.

oh snap, thanks for the heads up

So were I to buy Premier or Pinnacle, which should it be?

Vegas 8, I finally dumped Pinnacle and I couldn't be happier!

You can download a trial of Vegas from Sony's website. At first its a little tough to use but once you figure out where everything is it is much quicker than Pinnacle, I haven't used Premier in a few years and didn't like it when I did use it. I'm sure it's better now, but I couldn't judge. Just stay the hell away from Pinnacle. It sucks donkey dick compared to Vegas.

- Apoc - 09-28-2007

I can use multiple audio tracks and control the each individually, right?

Vegas looks kinda neato. I'll give that one a try. Now I just need some video to edit.

Home made midget porn?

Yes, you can have multiple audio AND video tracks and control each individually, volume, plugins, effects, etc. Now Vegas comes in a Consumer and PRO version. The Consumer version is limited in the total number of tracks. I think it's 4 or 6 theres also a few other things that the PRO version has over the Consumer. I have the Pro version 7e and love it. The consumer has a Platinum version as well but I think that just gives you more formats like HD and such so you might not need that. Best is to compare the features and then use that particular demo to make sure it will do everything you want it to do.
