rFactor? - BLINGMW - 10-03-2006 Have any of you tried this game? From what little I understand, the engine is the same that drives GTR1/2, but this is direct from the developer. It also has a larger comunity of people making tracks (take a look at tracks at: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/). I brought home the work laptop over the weekend (its somewhat more up to date 2gig mobile proc blows away my desktop :? ), installed GT2 demo and rFactor. It might just be that the rFactor demo had a much more playable car, while GTR2 dumps me into a race prepped Ferarri, but I enjoyed rFactor quite a bit more. You can tell they're similar, and I can't fairly judge two completely different cars, but the sound and feel of rFactor was better IMHO. Graphics were similar for both games (and spectacular). There's still a jumpy/fake/disconnected feel when I turn in in GTR, maybe it can be dialed out, but I wasn't able to make it much better. From what I read, rFactor's online component is much better than GTR2. In both games, the AI kicks my ass. Has anyone else tried it? I was considering buying one or the other, and rFactor is $40 instead of $20, but from what I can tell, it looks like a lot more tracks (that we've seen and driven) are available. Am I wrong? Are there just as many tracks for GTR2? I don't really have any well thought out questions or analysis, I just wanted to hear feedback from anyone else that's played the full version.
- Evan - 10-03-2006 actually from what I have read is that it uses a much more sophisticated physics engine than GTR 1 and 2, and GTR2 licensed their graphics engine from them. I have heard great things about this game, and I was planning on picking it up along with GTR2 to see which one I like better. (unfortunately I never seem to have any time to play) rFactor doesnt have any "real" tracks or "real" cars that come in the box, they are expecting people to port cars and tracks, and so far there are plenty. The singleplayer aspect of rFactor is pretty poor according to the review I read because the AI will punt you! There is a MX-5 Cup mod for rFactor that looks like a lot of fun. Ill order up the game if you do Chan. Maybe Ill play this one more than I played LFS  - BLINGMW - 10-03-2006 hmm.... good offer. 8) I need to re-think my current compy though, as bringing the work laptop home isn't much of a permanent solution. I'll tell you if I buy it. As far as the AI goes, it didn't seem that either of them were afraid to punt me during warmup laps. MX5 cup sounds like hot shit  - Evan - 10-23-2006 So chan did you pick up rFactor? Im going to download and play the demo tonight and see how I like it (and how it runs on my old computer) Id like to get some regular online racing now that its the offseason. I picked up GTR2 this past weekend and Im playing through it to get used to it. My hardware is a bit outdated for it though so looks like I need to budget an upgrade. - BLINGMW - 10-24-2006 so we both need an upgrade I guess. My PC is dead it seems, and couldn't play this stuff anyway. I'm shopping... but no, I didn't bother buying the game yet. - white_2kgt - 10-24-2006 I downloaded the demo and played it last night, WAY to hella hard trying to drive a car with the , and . keys, not to mention throttle modulation using the A key and threshold braking using the Z key, I gave up after 10 minutes, took about an hour to download and install and I'm not about to spend $100 on a wheel to test for a demo of a game that boast 'real' cars and 'real' tracks yet doesn't offer either in the demo. I want to race VIR or WGI dammit. - BLINGMW - 10-24-2006 yeah I bet using the keys was FUN! Consider a $20 gamepad? I don't like the wheels much myself. - Evan - 10-24-2006 both rFactor and GTR2 have VIR and WGI (and road atlanta, road america, mid ohio, laguna seca, etc) I have a momo force wheel that is pretty good, you can pick them up now for around $60 - white_2kgt - 10-24-2006 BLINGMW Wrote:yeah I bet using the keys was FUN! Consider a $20 gamepad? I don't like the wheels much myself. Hum, I do have an old sidewinder flight pad somewhere in my computer crap, that is analong I might try and dig that up, but dammit, I wanted to drive a track that I know! Forza has Road America and Road Atlanta, but of course, never been there yet either! - DMClark - 10-24-2006 Rfactor is certainly a great game. I can't really speak about the physics as I've never myself been able to tell. But with the huge support from the fans of the game providing lots of mod and tracks it is great. The rfactorcentral lists just a few of the mods and tracks avaliable. Check here: http://forum.rscnet.org/forumdisplay.php?f=869 There you will find some more tracks that aren't published as much, news on more mods, and some WIP tracks that can still be very good. There is a good VIR on there that can be found. Though the scenery around the track isn't correct the layout of the track is fairly good. With all the tracks both from 3rd parties, and those from ISI (Monza and China recently) as well as the tons of mods (be sure to check out F1 champions 1.06 and CTDP 2005 F1) the replay of the game is going to be high for quite awhile. While also steeling a lot of your productivity. As for the using a keyboard with it. I use one and find it fine, just have to fine tune the control to your liking first. I'm too cheap to buy a wheel and pedals for the computer. You can't really get the same things from a keyboard as those. It is still quite fun with just a keyboard, but it took me a while to get the settings like I wanted. - Evan - 10-24-2006 white_2kgt Wrote:but dammit, I wanted to drive a track that I know!Well, you might actually have to buy something then. Pick up GTR2 at bestbuy for $20. Ill even send you all the tracks. - white_2kgt - 10-24-2006 Evan Wrote:white_2kgt Wrote:but dammit, I wanted to drive a track that I know!Well, you might actually have to buy something then. There goes another $20 towards racing games down the shitter. - G.Irish - 10-24-2006 white_2kgt Wrote:I downloaded the demo and played it last night, WAY to hella hard trying to drive a car with the , and . keys, not to mention throttle modulation using the A key and threshold braking using the Z key...I just had a funny vision of Chad getting into a turn too hot, "OH SHIT! *ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!*" - white_2kgt - 10-24-2006 G.Irish Wrote:white_2kgt Wrote:I downloaded the demo and played it last night, WAY to hella hard trying to drive a car with the , and . keys, not to mention throttle modulation using the A key and threshold braking using the Z key...I just had a funny vision of Chad getting into a turn too hot, "OH SHIT! *ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!*" harharhar, the graphics were quite good, I did catch myself pushing my foot forward a few times as I was headed into the wall, I kept wanting to reach up and grab the steering wheel to make that damn car turn. - .RJ - 10-24-2006 G.Irish Wrote:I just had a funny vision of Chad getting into a turn too hot, "OH SHIT! *ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!*" Just like driving a mustang on track. - BLINGMW - 11-14-2006 ok, no more waffling, I'm buying rFactor right now. If I'm not on Road ATL in less than 30 min.... well more scotch! - BLINGMW - 11-14-2006 hooray ATL in MX5 cup car! - Evan - 11-15-2006 Im in. Anyone else want to get their shit ruined? - BLINGMW - 11-16-2006 so does that mean you want to race tonight? - Evan - 11-16-2006 by 'in' I mean 'soon' |
