What do you guys know about Saab 900 Turbos? - Andy - 09-28-2006

I'm talking about 93 and back. They seem to be damn cool cars especially because the trans is directly underneath the engine.
I've been reading about them on the interweb and they seem pretty interesting.

Known problem areas? What do you look for if you were in the market for one?

The biggest bottle of jack daniels you can find.

No, really. Unless you have a HUGE hardon for saabs, run -- don't walk.

The only Saab I'd ever own would be a V4 Sonnet.

They are quirky and weird, hard to work on and have expensive parts. Torque steer out the bunghole, and electrical problems with all the other european cars. If you want a swedish car, get an old Volvo.

I mean, is this really something you want to deal with:

The 900s are much better than the newer 9000s. The old 900 turbo we had was a fun car. However, it became stricken with electical problems, etc later on in its life. Not to mention parts are quite expensive.

the 9000T shop car here is nice, no problems that i know of, and it has its boost upped and its running a shot of nitrous. we just keep breaking axles is the only thing....oh and the engine bay of the 9000 looks nothing like that

A 9000 is a totally different animal. It has a more conventional transverse motor setup. But Andy's talking about (I think) one of those crazy "rear accessory" 900's.

Yeah, the "Classic 900" Turbo is what I'm looking at. I was researching parts and they don't seem that expensive. What parts are you thinking of? Brakes, Clutch, axles, shocks all seem on the cheap side of things.

Also, I wouldn't mod this thing. It would just be an interesting daily.

boost brick > boost wedge

Need a wagon to take your kids to soccer practice?

Volvo > Saab anyday. I have a friend that had two back in highschool, 900 Turbos. They are huge pieces of shit. Only reason I would want one would be to get the intercooler and turbo off it. He kept having problems with stuff breaking on ths inside. Panels, switches, window motors. He rarely had everything in the car working at one time and it never lasted that long. The white one shot a turbo and the red one's tranny blew up. So he scrapped the red one and pulled the turbo off to fix the white one. Last I heard the white one was still setting at another friend's house with the drivetrain all in pieces. At least I got some nice leather seats out of the deal. I need to find those, forgot where I stored them.

not really related to saabs, but what are peoples' impressions of ford probe GT's?

Except for being a girlmobile, they're pretty cool.

Mazda MX-6 hatchback with a body kit.

- Maengelito - 09-28-2006

common problems to look out for, easy upgrades, etc?

Maengelito Wrote:common problems to look out for, easy upgrades, etc?

Don't buy an automatic.

BUt you knew that.

The most common upgrade is the ~200hp 2.5 liter V6 from Japanland. Also the common I/H/E, and they're not impossible to turbocharge.

But if you're looking for a car with an aftermarket, you're probably looking in the wrong place. If you like it stock, go ahead and get one. I wouldn't if you didn't.

They're gay and Saabs would be much better.

You're not thinking of getting one, are you?

I don't think your heterosexuality can handle a Probe and Miata.
