Sorry I done been gone... *56k warning* - JackoliciousLegs - 09-04-2006

I'm in Austin... Austin Massachusetts... ok, maybe India. Internet access is reliable and fast. Roads are clean and safe. Everyone speaks English. I'm not sick. Oh, and Indian women are all over me... ok... I wish.

Internet sucks, roads are smelly and caraaazy. Some people speak english. I'm sick (maybe Malaria... again... I'll find out soon). Indian women... haha... well... it's different and interesting :-)...

It's been a great trip. I've been exploring a lot and work is really great. I'm training some folks out here and enjoying living in lavish comfort!

WASSSAAAA... dollars are for suckers!

Seriously.... India fuckin rocks. In the short time that I've been here, even though I'm sick (and contingent upon the fact that I won't die from what I have), this place blows the two months in Australia out of the water.

Hey, what's India without a quick stop in ENGLAND?

Anyways... if you guys want to go to India... get your vaccines... don't go on 4 days notice... and play with small children. You're sure to have a great time!

- WRXtranceformed - 09-04-2006

Awesome pictures man! That place you're staying at looks dope as hell. I love how the Buddha in that pic has like a halo of light around it.

Where exactly in India are you staying? That area looks really nice, but from what I hear, a large part of that country is a complete shithole. Sounds like one of those countries where you'd want to pick and choose where to go if you visited for pleasure.

- JackoliciousLegs - 09-04-2006

The place is Hyderabad. It's not a shithole but I could see how lots of people would think it is. It's infested with mosteeqos, there's tons of trash everywhere, and the streets are really smelly from all the 2-stroke exhaust. I think that it has personality. There's a street festival going on all the time, people are friendly, street crime is rare, and if you like Indian culture, this is a better place to be than a more modern Indian city. I wouldn't want to live in Hyderabad, but it's definitely made me even more interested in visiting the coast of the country.

How's the food in India? Is it similar to what we have here at say Aroma or Minerva or is it total totally different?

Dude, your business trip so far looks awesome. I wish I had your job. The only places I'm been were post Katrina Mississippi and Louisiana.

- Mike - 09-04-2006

i had indian last night... looks cool, jack. fyi, india has the most english speaking persons in the world Smile

- Feersty - 09-04-2006

That's awesome Jack. Are you coming back to the States after your stint in India, or are you gonna be sent somewhere else?

- HAULN-SS - 09-04-2006

What do you do exactly that requires so much travel? I was kind of under the impression you had a mehhh job...i dunno how I got that.

- PDenbigh - 09-04-2006

Jack that's awesome!

Love the pic of the moped. You're awesome adventures make me jelious ;-).

Enjoy and be safe, I'll look forward to more updates!

Pete

- Goodspeed - 09-04-2006

Awesome pics man, looks like a great time. I personally never wanted to go to India b/c of that reputation it has...apparently you can smell the country like 2 miles off the coast haha. But it is without a doubt rooted in history and culture and it looks like a blast. I guess you're not seeing Skylines on every corner now though

Yeah...and I'm a polyglot because I have been able to carry on simple conversations in six languages.

Sounds like your trip is going well Jack. A couple friends of mine and I have been talking about visiting India for a while now so if you have any more suggestions please write them up. I'm going to learn devanagari so that I'll be able to read Hindi here in a little bit.

Surprisingly, the Indian food in the US is nearly identical to the *actual* food in India. I loved it in the US and I love it here. I dunno about those restaurants specifically, but if you go to any place run by indians, chances are that it's actually what's eaten in nice restaurants in Southern India. Northern Indian food isn't all about rice. It's mainly just the sauce and chapati.

Actually, it's not hard to get around at all. I can at least get people to understand me... the other way around... ehhhhnotsomuch
Feersty Wrote:That's awesome Jack. Are you coming back to the States after your stint in India, or are you gonna be sent somewhere else?
Probably back to the states for a while. I didn't know the job was going to be this much travel. I don't think it'll last.
HAULN-SS Wrote:What do you do exactly that requires so much travel? I was kind of under the impression you had a mehhh job...i dunno how I got that.
I did have a meh job straight out of school (CGI-AMS, several of my friends also quit) which I quit 3 months in for this job I found on Craigslist. The new company is a mid to enterprise level on-demand CRM provider called RightNow Technologies. We've got ~600 employees. I'm a developer on the delivery side of our software cycle. Basically, a consultant / developer that will do some business process analysis and do modifications to our software to make it fit better for them. It's all in PHP, so I feel right at home Smile Some of the clients I've delivered for are Nike, Air Canada, Motorola, CBS, Cisco, DivX, Nikon, Orbitz, Vodafone... etc... so we're not a mom n pop chop shop. In India, specifically, British Telecom (our customer) is trying to outsource some of their support and they sent me out to give a small 6 person group some technical training.... soo... yeah, the job rocks. I love it.
PDenbigh Wrote:Enjoy and be safe, I'll look forward to more updates!
Thanks buddy, I'm trying to stay safe, but I feel like this city, although large, is very safe because most of the people are very Hindu and wouldn't harm a fly. We're actually in the middle of a Ganesh festival and the streets are full of very happy, very friendly Indians.

India can definitely be called... well... not the cleanest place, but I wouldn't hesitate for a second to come back.
Skylines... not so much  I saw a BMW... does that count?
KPWSerpiente Wrote:A couple friends of mine and I have been talking about visiting India for a while now so if you have any more suggestions please write them up. I'm going to learn devanagari so that I'll be able to read Hindi here in a little bit.
Suggestions... hmmm... nope. It's like visiting any other third world country. Hang on to your passport and bring lots of ibuprofen, antihistamine, and pepto. The worst thing that can happen is for you to lose your passport, so keep it close (I have one of those under-your-pants pouches for retards  ). Other than that, this place would be incredible to just travel around. I say, just encourage them to get out and do it! Oh, and rock on with the languages man. If you're good at that stuff, keep it up!
karmapolice Wrote:Those are some absolutley amazing pics. Oh and what kind of camera is that? Very nice lens.
Thanks! Camera is a Nikon D50, lens is 18-55 D-AF (nothing special), I've got a couple of filters, and the dial never touches auto Smile . Keep in mind, it's easy to take pretty pictures when everything you see is new and interesting.
TurboOmni08 Wrote:Very nice hotel. Wish I could go places...and do things...
Nothing's stopping you man!!!

So, I'm not deathly sick, just very sick. Apparently you can get normal colds in India too... lol. So here's a couple of new pictures for your viewing pleasure!

Nice pics jack, sounds like you are having a great time travelling for your job.
My last company had a huge office in India, and its a pretty big culture shock according to my coworkers who went. Our office is a huge building that overlooks a slum of lean-tos and 3rd world poverty.
So many people die in traffic accidents that project managers actually had to account for the fact they would probably loose someone on a longer term project!
People are so cheap there that when they would ship a US person over there, they get their own driver, assistant, and in the office you never clean anything or even erase a whiteboard yourself.

I have to admit, Im starting to waver from my previous "fuck travelling" attitude.
The Australia position opened up again and Im considering it.
