ÔÇÿOperation Air, Land & SpeedÔÇÖ Set For Weekend

By Heather Bowser

Pedal-heavy interstate drivers should pull back the reins this weekend or a run-in with the law will do it for them.

On Friday, state troopers will start the first of three summer saturation campaigns, called "Operation Air, Land & Speed," on Interstates 81 and 95, the Virginia State Police announced Wednesday.

Until Monday night, Virginia police will deploy "every available officer" onto the roadways and the airspace above the road to slow traffic and prevent fatalities, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Troopers will target intoxicated drivers and aggressive behavior, said state police Sgt. Frederick Tyler. They also will aggressively search for drivers with out-of-date stickers or tags, safety belt or child restraint violations, no insurance, and anyone tailgating and making abrupt lane changes.

"If we see something, anything, weÔÇÖll take care of it," Tyler said.

The remaining two campaign dates had not been announced as of Wednesday.

Sounds like a nice chance to take US-340 up to Winchester, rather than 81...

Thanks for the heads up Pete.

i went down to charleston sc last weekend which entails being on 95 south for about 7 hours. we saw so many cops all along the trip, it was rediculous. but then again, it was the 4th of july weekend. regardless, thanks for the warning pete

There are always a ton of cops on I-81 down here in southwest va. About a year ago they passed a law down here (maybe elsewhere as well) that said county and town officers are allowed to patrol and sit on interstate to catch speeders, not just state troopers anymore. Just in the 5 mile interstate stretch I take to the gym in the mornings I always see at least one cop.

Thanks Pete. Dually noted, although I will already be in Charles Town come late afternoon.

I'm glad I'm getting my car back AFTER the weekend =D

I've noticed a TON of cops on Rt. 7 heading toward sterling from Leesburg and all over 7 west headed out toward winchester.

i'm glad i saw this post before i went out for a ride tonight. The police around the springfield area, rt 1, and back roads are out. i saw about 8-9 on a 40 minute ride - about 5-6 perched in hidden spots and 3 on the roads patrolling.

Saw at least 3 cars get pulled off in the little over an hour trip I had on 95 during the weekend. Saw probably 15 cop cars in different locations on the trip as well... Good thing I was in the stealth Camry wagon.

I saw 3 speed traps on my way through Fairfax this morning (on Ox Road, Route 29, and Route 50/29 near the changeover). I got hit by the one on 29 (which was near the Fairfax County Parkway overpass) doing 62 in a 45. He gave me a warning, though. Hooray for bike cops! All three traps were by bike cops and they all waved (well, except for the one that gave me the warning, but he was nice)
