external, diagnostic, basically any tach that takes a regular low voltage rpm signal
if so, Id like to borrow it briefly

I wonder if something like a Matco scan tool would have what you need? I think it can read tach from the OBD2. I have one if you would like to try.

My BigAssMultimeter has a tach output. 4/6/8 Don't know if that's helpful for your application or not.
