So a coworker of mine arrives yesterday with a new Magnum Hemi to replace his busted old Escort Wagon. Cool! After lunch, he shows up in a new Sable Wagon. He thought the Magnum was too much car so he took it back and got this instead. Seriously though, how do you go from a car that is pretty fucking sweet to one of the worst cars you could possibly buy?

He came to his senses and realized the rebadged ford taurus was a much better value, would get the same job done for much less $$, and decided not to pay a premium for vanity and power he'd never use? Just a guess.

the thing is, a modern taurus isn't that practical imo. i've had numerous friends and neighbors with them, none made it over 100k miles.

no kidding? my grandpa had an old taurus sedan (from the 80's...solid front grille) that ran forever. seriously never missed a beat. i thought the new ones carried on with that kind of robustness.

Just pulled out the consumer's reports guide, it showed up to '03 for the sable, its marks look more like a honda! Well not quite THAT good.... brakes and electrical system seem to be the only weak points, drivetrain, most of the other stuff is good. But more like a BMW, and better than the other german makes. And quite a bit better than most of the GM and Dodge products I see in here.
I wouldn't rely too much on a few isolated incidents.
Is that what an "enthusiast" is? Someone who makes decisions with their little head rather than their big one? If so, count me out.

not really isolated incidents, they were 3/3.
neighbor 1 - headgasket went at 60k
roommate 1 - tranny went at 55k
roommate 2 - too many problems to list at 80k
i don't know anyone else who has owned those cars except for adam and he does his own work so keeping them running is another story.

I never worked on the GL until it hit 120k miles. Still running strong at 137k. Problems to date:
Before I drove it:
Tranny Sensor / Crank Position Sensor- ~$600 at ~70k miles
Thermostat ~Cheap at 100k miles
Multiple Brake Jobs (rotors like to warp)
After I started driving the piss out of it:
Brake Booster - 120k
EGR Sensor - 130k
Master Cylinder - 130k
Rear O2s - 137k
Engine still has perfect compression, tranny is original, it was a rental car before we bought it and I'm 100% positive I was harder on that car than any of your roommates or neighbors. It has NEVER left myself or any member of my family stranded on the side of the road. Damn good car IMO.

I think the earlier Tauruses were pretty solid (wasn't it the best selling car in the US for a good while?). Its the late model fish-looking ones that were suspect.

Ehh, I guess it was just not what he needed in a car. He is a strange one anyway, wagon owners are few and far between. I really don't think there is much more practicle about a Taurus over the Magnum though. If you drive conservatively it's like any other car, and the MDS keeps the mileage like that of a V6 if you can keep off the happy pedal. The only real excuse would be payments and insurance. Or he could be like most people and decide "wow, this car is really ugly."

all my examples were like 96+ not the adam-style ones.
