Reverse Pass - ViPER1313 - 04-27-2004

Has anyone here ever passed a person in reverse (ie... They tailgate you, you go into the opposing lane of traffic and brake, then fall behind them) on a 2 lane road (assuming it is a legal passing zone)? Is this a legal maneuver? Do you feel it's a reasonable course of action if you are already going 10mph + over the speed limit?

- JackoliciousLegs - 04-27-2004

No, it's illegal. In virginia at least you can only pass going forward and the appropriate course of action is to tap your brakes if you feel you're being tailgated. You do not have to speed up or pass backwards. They are breaking the law by tailgating you.

You can make the bastard pay for tailgating you by slowing to the speed limit and below. I personally will not hesitate to slow down to 10mph on a 2 lane road when someone is tailgating me. If they try to pass me illegally, I gas it real hard and don't let them pass. Yes, I know it's evil, but it's not against the law to go below the speed limit. Even on highways, the unofficial lower limit is 35mph but I don't even think that's in writing.

- ViPER1313 - 04-27-2004

Usually, I will just tap the brakes or go the speed limit then gas it till thereÔÇÖs a car length or 2. I have been known to go down a gear and drop the clutch though, and have reverse passed a couple of people before. I got the idea of trying it while practicing avoidance maneuvers one night (it's easier to get the right rear tire of a Taurus off the ground than you might think  ).... just wondering if it was semi legal or not.

- DierwulfBL - 05-06-2004

the ticket you get for going too slow is called "impeding the flow of traffic" and it's up to the officers discretion as to whether you were impeding the flow of traffic or not. Although if you were going 35mph in a 55mph zone and someone was tailgating you, i bet they'd pull the tailgater over before they did you, even if you were doing 25mph. As to reverse passing.........yea that's the first time ive heard of that one, definitely not legal haha but sounds funny nonetheless, i kinda do that if some ricer is trying to race me on a 2 lane road and theyre in the fast lane and noone's behind me i just slow down enough so they get far enough ahead as not to be stupid

I did something like this the other day. This protoge was riding my ass, so I dipped into the passing lane, dropped back adjacent to him, flipped him off, and quickly returned to my previous position.

It wasn't intelligent, it wasn't legal, but GOD it felt good.

i did the infamous reverse pass on I64 on my way home. like 4 kids in a sedan g35 were tailgating/enticing a high speed race on the interstate, so i reverse passed them, only this one was legal Smile

- G.Irish - 05-22-2004

Reverse pass seems like an oxymoron to me *shrugs*. Anyway if someone is tailgating me I'd rather pull over to the shoulder and let them go than go into the oncoming traffic lane. Either that or ignore them. With me for the most part, as long as they don't hit me they can get up on my bumper all they want.

oilslick! 8)

I did a reverse pass the other day on 81.
Asshat in a Saturn Vue came up on me (I was in left lane) and I got over to the right. He got over right behind me. Followed me several miles and in the process I passed several cars, always returned to the right, and he would get in right behind me. I got sick of it, got in left lane, hit the brakes down to 50 and got in behind him and let him go on down the road. Weird thing, I was going 65 the whole time. Obviously, he was traveling faster than me, or he never would have caught me. He slowed down to 65 while following me, and as soon as I was behind him, he went on down the road at an estimated 70mph. I don't mind people following me usually, but this clown really ticked me off for some reason.

- Sijray21 - 07-07-2004

i've had the urge to do that, instead i just keep slowing down slowly till they get irritated enough to pass. I don't understand drivers like that though?

- JackoliciousLegs - 07-07-2004

that's my favorite thing... evar.. i slow down to old woman speeds.

- Mike - 07-07-2004

Some bitch in an E46 was tailing me today while I was going about 63 in a 55. That bitch. I gave the brakes a tap (not hard, just enough to light up my lights), she backed off for about 5 seconds, and then got right back on my ass :? What a bitch.

that's when you slow to 45 lol, even better if it's only a 2-laned road

- .RJ - 07-07-2004

Then watch as they get pissed off and start honking their horn.

Good time to spray the windshield washers too, so it gets on their car.

If only I had windshield washers Sad

- JackoliciousLegs - 07-07-2004

I have one washer turned up... lol... in a 55.. i'd be doing 25 and doing a slow lane change (so i take up the whole road)... oh... all while spraying my washer...

- Feersty - 07-07-2004

I got flipped the bird for no reason on 81.

I bet there was a reason. Unless they were in high school I doubt they'd throw it just to throw it.

- Mike, who still thinks I "stupid shit I did in high school" thread would be golden.
