Insurance costs - Nick325is - 03-31-2006

I'm looking around at the costs of ownership of a bike right now and I was wondering what everyone is paying roughly for insurance here.

Any info that could be shed on this would be great.

It all depends on what kind of coverage you're going to get. I just have the bare minimum coverage, liability only and it's just over $200 a year for me through Allstate. This is taking into consideration my discounts because both of my other vehicles are insured through them as well as my renters insurance. I was curious what it would be to add theft to the plan and that was going to be another $450 a year for the $500 deductible. If you are going to carry full coverage it's going to get quite pricey.

Probably looking at just liability insurance. My car insurance is currently through progressive. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I'm with progressive for bike insurance - the 87 Yamaha was $90/yr, the 96 CBR is $140/yr - liability only. I have my car insurance w/ the gecko and they wanted $350 or so per year.

I'm 26 with only one violation (improper turn signal or something) in the past 5 years (on record at least).

If its just liability it'll be pretty low, somewhere between $200-400 per year, maybe less if you take the MSF and have a good record.

Also, anything over a 600cc bike will send your insurance rates through the roof.

Nothing over a 600cc for me at first. Possibly a CBR 600 or something similar. I am 20 and have a clean record and will be taking the MSF this summer.

Look for a Ninja 500 - they're cheap, plenty of them around, and pretty damn bulletproof.

My F3 is nice, but I dont think I would have wanted to put my first few thousand miles on it.

It depends on so many things. Value of the bike, what kind of bike, engine size, driving record, full coverage, comprehensive, liability, what your deductable is, where you live, etc. I have a 94 Yamaha Seca II (600 cc's) and I paid 300 dollars for the first year I had it at 21 years old. This was in NOVA, clean driving record, and I have liability and comprehensive, but no collision. Keep in mind if you finance you will be required to get full coverage and it will be significantly more. After a year my insurance went down by about 50 bucks because I still had a clean record. It went down an additional 50 bucks by having the bike in Blacksburg instead of nova, so I now pay 200 dollars for a year of liability + comprehensive.

full fairing bikes are more expensive too - if you cna find a bike that has exposed headlights and whatnot iti'll be cheaper - by a lot

i pay i high premium.

$1400/yr with liability and comprehensive (about $900 of the $1400) to cover my '03 600rr. My deductible is $100 though. If i chose a $500 deductible my premium would drop to a little over $1100. My '95 gs500e was only $330/yr with just liability. This is also my first year riding and i've completed the MSF course in Virginia. The bikes were also registered in Northern VA (nearly triple H-burg for my cars - :hammerSmile

I'm 22 with 2 speeding tickets in the last 2 years, 1 minor accident 3 years ago, a reckless ticket about 5 years ago, and a ticket for neglegent driving with i was 16 (8 years ago - doesn't really count), but not close to a perfect record. I've also claimed a stolen car, and numerous break-ins/thefts from my vehicles on my car insurance. My insurance company is Progressive through USAA - i'm hoping to transfer to Statefarm next year after it's been 3 years since my last ticket so it's "clean" in their eyes (they only check 3 years prior to the date of issue).

I'm paying just over $700/year full coverage (progressive) for this:

I'm 21 with a clean record but Progressive now considers the 00-02 Kawi 6R's as "sport tourers" because they were so popular Kawasaki continued making them under their ZZR line and markets them as tourers, not race replicas.
