Possible Event for Dave/MM - Chris - 04-19-2004 well we talked some about this at the party, but I had an idea for Dave to enter the Grassroots $2005 Challenge. With the new 240sx, and plans for the car, we could help Dave prep and build the car for the competition. Now I'm really not sure how possible this could be, but it would be huge for MM. Here is a link to this years $2004 Challenge: http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/challenge.php I'm not sure of the date for the $2005 Challenge so we'd need to research that and all the rules. I believe the event would be held in Florida. First of all, Dave would you be up for this? Second, could we make this work? I know we could fund raise to raise money for a club trip to Florida and other expenses. - KPWSerpiente - 04-19-2004 I'm sold on it. -T - ScottyB - 04-19-2004 awesome idea Chris. I think we just need to put our heads together and we can make this happen! when is the 2005 challenge taking place? - Mike - 04-19-2004 HUGE time commitment. Would the goal be to place well or to just get there and run? - KPWSerpiente - 04-19-2004 Well obviously this is entirely up to Dave. But how much did the car cost? What is it's condition? Does it run? What work needs to be done to it just to have it in daily driver condition? I am all about something like this and time means nothing to me. I'll have to reserve my other opinions/ideas until I know about the car. -T - CaptainHenreh - 04-19-2004 KPWSerpiente Wrote:Well obviously this is entirely up to Dave. Rex to the rescue! The engine runs, the transmission is broke. There is a parts car complete with 5 speed transmission and all appropriate parts ready to be picked up as soon as dave gets his half. The car is a perfect race car (as you have seen) and depending on the limitations of the racing, has alot of potential. ~210 hp is only abour 300 dollars and a bit of tuning away. With KA24 single cam pistons an 11.1:1 comp ratio is achieved. A little sunoco 94 and an AFC and we've got a winner with the engine. (Maybe some mild porting and a nice header). The suspension will need work, and it's an open diff. Other than that, dave paid 824 dollars for the car, and (.5*500) dollars for the parts car. But depending on when the competition is, I think it's totally reasonable. I don't think he can win, but I do think he can be very competitive. - .RJ - 04-19-2004 Dont forget the nawwwwwwsssss!!! - CaptainHenreh - 04-19-2004 .RJ Wrote:Dont forget the nawwwwwwsssss!!! With 11.1:1 compression there would be severe damage to the intake manifold, and the distinct possibility of floorplan failure. So we should get two bottles. Big ones. - .RJ - 04-19-2004 Better call harry - Dave - 04-19-2004 number one, we discussed this on Saturday (while I was sober) and I think it sounds like a ton of fun. That said, half of the money is pretty much spent at this point. Between the $800 for the car and the $250 (my half of the $500) for the parts car, I'd be running out of room very quickly. The good thing is, Rex and I will probably be able to sell a good chunk of the parts on the wrecked car, so we could make up some money there, possibly even breaking even. My goal for the car as a racecar were as follows: -reliable enough to drive every day, as well as to and from the track (if we actually put this peice into the challenge, I want to trailer it down there, cuz its a hell of a drive) -good fixed back seats with harnesses and a roll bar -interior is already gutted, so thats one good thing -above stated engine mods -kyb agxs with eibachs and whiteline swaybars (ought to be able to pick these up pretty cheap) -brake upgrade hopefully I think we could pull it off, but it will be tough and we need some details on the actual challenge. When is it? What are the rules? Etc. I plan to get it running within the next month and track it all summer, so I should have a good idea of how it handles by next fall. Then we can do the suspension mods and let me get used to it over the fall. And finally do engine stuff over the winter, allowing me to get used to that over the spring, leading up to the actual event. The best part is, I'll have a spare engine, so if one blows up, it won't be a total loss. Being competitive would be nice, but I think it would just be awesome to do it and have some fun. In other words, I'm down with it. Once I get the manual in this and sell the red car, this project will be well underway. Anybody else have any input? - PDenbigh - 04-19-2004 I'll volunteer to trailer it down. Got the truck coverd, and maybe by that time I'll even have a trailer! - Dave - 04-19-2004 heh, did a bit of research (my GRM gets sent to my house so I don't get to keep up with it much). 3 categories: car show, autoX, drag just by actually being able to compete will get you to do better than a lot, since people will inevitably break shit. Friday is unlimited runs at the drag strip Saturday is 5 runs at the autoX. can get judged at the concours either day. my impression is that the 240 has a good bit of potential for the autoX, and with 210hp in a 2400 lb chassis, it won't be too slow in the drag. The interior is gonna get some sprucing up pretty soon too, so it won't do horribly at the car show from what I can tell. I can pretty much do anything I want to the car, and can resell stuff to make up to an additional $1002 to spend. Therefore, selling parts off this and the wrecked car can make me up to another grand, leaving me a total of $3007 to play with. I'm pretty sure that I could meet my goals with that much money. Can use slicks at the drag strip, but have to use road tires at the autoX (used azenis anyone?) Sounds like a good time. I'd have no problem painting some MMs on the car to represent us down thar. - BLINGMW - 04-19-2004 just remember, (I think) you can't sell more parts off the car than you baught the car for. So I think, best case scenario, you have $2005 to play with in mods for a $0 car. - CaptainHenreh - 04-19-2004 Even so, if we can break even with the car (tranny nonwithstanding) I think the rest (yes, even the engine) can be done for 2005 dollars. I saw an excellent set of high comp pistions and rods for 100 bucks, could find dave's suspension for less than 400 (I'm certain!) and if dave relents to Q45 brakes, (as opposed to Z brakes) then those could be had for 300 dollah! Or less. But I think it's an excellent platform for this kind of race. The show will be the hardest part. - Mike - 04-19-2004 from reading the mag over the years is also seems as if you tell someone you need it for a challenge car they may reduce their price drastically. - .RJ - 04-19-2004 http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/board/ ... 9173688689 here you go - Evan - 04-19-2004 eh Im not really a fan of the 200x challenge. It started out as a great, fun idea, but I think guys are taking it too seriously and putting way too much ego into it, enough to fib about prices. I refuse to believe in any way shape or form that you can build a v8 miata for $2k. simply cant be done. - G.Irish - 04-19-2004 Evan Wrote:I refuse to believe in any way shape or form that you can build a v8 miata for $2k. simply cant be done.
