Muffler choices - mpg9999 - 02-09-2006

I ordered up a 3 inch VRS piping kit so now I need a resonator and muffler to go with it. I currently have a universal magnaflow that I've been pretty happy with, but I am considering changing it up. I realize thing are going to sound different on different cars depending on alot of things, but I'd like to hear your opinions. I want something that is oval, not round, somewhat stock looking, and quiet (as much as it can be on a three inch exhaust). I'm leaning towards a Remus if I can find a three inch one, or a Stromung.

-Magnaflow part #14249. 3 inch inlet/outlet, 5x8 oval polished stainless steel, 18 inch body, 24 overall.

-Thermal Universal muffler. 81630S. SS 3 inch in/outlet 18 inch body.

-Vibrant Performance universal muffler: 5x9 body, 15 inches long, 3 inch inlet/outlet and stainless steel. They have a flatblack one on page two: http://www.vibrantperformance.com/products/catalog05/pg22-23.pdf

-Stromung universal: Can't find out anything online, need to call them for specifics. I've heard good things though. http://www.stromung.com/

-Brullen Universal muffler: 14x8x5 3 inch in/out ss. http://www.ppsonline.net/brullen.htm#brullenmufflers

-Remus: Also hard to find out inlet/outlet dimensions online. Need to see if they have a three inch inlet/outlet universal. http://www.ppsonline.net/remus.htm#universal

Any input is welcome.

i have a magnaflow oval... truly awesome. why 3 inches? that's a bit big for your motor.

- .RJ - 02-09-2006

2.5" will be plenty for your engine.

SMSP uses magnaflow mufflers, so I'd go with that.

Thats what I have now. This is what it sounds like <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://filebox.vt.edu/users/mgeogheg/autoxoutofcar.wmv">http://filebox.vt.edu/users/mgeogheg/autoxoutofcar.wmv</a><!-- m -->

And no, not big for my motor. It needs a 3 inch exhaust with the header I'm running and lts of valve overlap.

Flowmaster Delta 2

- Evan - 02-09-2006

Had a magnaflow straight through on the WRX and it sounded amazing.

The current "hot" exhaust for SM (where these guys spend days on a dyno designing exhausts for 2 extra hp) uses a magnaflow.

id go magnaflow

- ScottyB - 02-09-2006

another vouch for a magnaflow. had one on my old max and it was pretty nice.

- JustinG - 02-09-2006

im runnin a dynomax, 3inch round straight through design. i like it alot.

- Feersty - 02-09-2006

I had a flowmaster series 40 on the Buick, it was nice.

- WRXtranceformed - 02-09-2006

+1 for Magnaflow, the WRX had one and it had a great sound.

Dynomax outflows Magnaflow AND flowmaster..but people never seem to thinkof them for some reason. Anyhow, i have2.5" on my car, with 114* duration. 1 5/8" headers, which is a ton of overlap, and thats plenty big

Got tech to back that up?

Just curious.

- lillitnn92 - 02-09-2006

in my experience with Flowmaster 40 (current) and Dynomax mufflers, Flowmaster has better top end performance. i've gone between the two a few times and always "feel" better overall performance with the Flowmaster 40. only drawback, it's louder. i've been wanting to go to something else myself, but i'm afraid to loose too much. i actually had a N1 style canister on the truck at one also Smile it was under the bed, so you couldn't see it, but it sounded nice and performed almost identical to the Flowmaster with less noise.

i've seen lots of people with Magnaflow, must be for a good reason. my vote Smile

"The DynoMax brandÔÇÖs dynamometer-proven performance advantage can be seen in recent side-by-side testing of Ultra Flo (No. 17263), Borla (No. 40600), Edelbrock (No. 5511), and Flowmaster (No. 42540) mufflers. The DynoMax Ultra Flo muffler delivered 1,000 cubic-feet-per-minute flow, compared to 846 CFM for the Borla, 579 CFM for the Edelbrock, and 352 CFM for the Flowmaster units, respectively.1

1 Flow rate measured at 20.3 inches H20. Tested mufflers were short-body, 2.5-inch side/center configuration units. Tests utilized side connection as inlet.
"

Everything else I found searching for flow numbers in google was Dynomax's own muffler versions being compared to each other

- HAULN-SS - 02-09-2006

Just FYI< that is Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 series, and the chart and the quote are from 2 different tests

- Mike - 02-09-2006

well neither the quote or chart back up your claim that dynomax outflows magnaflow... sooo what was your point?

it is a straight through muffler, there is 0 restriction, well almost. I have 2 on my car, only downside, they are loud as fuck

magnaflow makes identical to that...

- HAULN-SS - 02-09-2006

I couldnt find the magnaflow data, but thats what ive been told, also, my statement encompassed Flowmaster as well, so I posted what I found. And, they are ALMOST a straight through design, in that they have a glass-pack sort of thing, but its not really fiberglass..some other thing.

that muffler is NOT a glasspack, they sound like shit. FWIW, the dynomax is cheap as shit as too
