Finally Got a Garage Door Opener - white_2kgt - 12-12-2005

We had to install a Ceiling fan first b/c the Propane heater was heating the rafters to about 20* greater than the floor.

bLiNg, it's on a remote control so I don't have to climb the lift to change the speeds :lol:

Onto the opener, challenge was 20' ceiling,

No problem when you have a big ass ladder and someone who doesn't mind climbing it (thanks Pete!)

In short it works, and it works great. Don't have any pictures of it b/c the garage is full of cars right now and not all mine.

Anyway, just wanted to share.

Have you ever thought about insulating your garage? Some R-30 Kraft-faced installed on your ceiling and possibly your walls might help keep those little propane heater bills down Wink

It would be hella easy to do, and any other cracks or gaps in the walls could be filled with insulating foam.

She wanted to go out and see what we did, so I made her open the spare opener 'early'. She opened it and was like, what is this Security switch for??? I said look outside and hit the button, I think she cried a little, haha. So she knows now and is very thankful that you came up and worked on it.

How much that shit cost? I have a big fucking garage and insulation would get expensive quick. I have a 100# propane tank, so they are not 'little' bills.

Yeah exactly, I figured that gets pricey ^_^ We fill up those white 100 pounders like they're going out of business at our site. I was running 6 at once, all day every day for like 3 weeks. Fortunately that doesn't factor into our direct budgets for the houses heh, or my variances would suck.

I honestly don't think that insulation costs too much. I'm trying to remember what we pay for it at the hardware store. I'd say though, for maybe a couple hundred bucks at the VERY most, you could insulate that whole place and I bet it would save you so much money over the long run. Especially when foaming any cracks or leaky areas, that's where you lose the most energy.

A hole in your wall is basically like throwing energy money away if you're conditioning a space.

I was just thinking that Kraft-faced may not be the best idea, unless you're going to eventually drywall your garage. The facing is, under code, considered a fire hazard. Our inspectors often make us rip it off the insulation if it's in a conditioned area that isn't drywalled. But, I seriously doubt you'd pull a permit just to insulate your garage =p

Kraft-faced is so money too, because you can tack the tabs on either end of the batt to your garage trusses or the studs in your wall so that they seal each truss / stud bay. If you do it right and prevent "fish-mouthing," you get a really really effective seal and help keep even more heat / coldness in. Here, I'm bored so here's a terrible MS Paint detail of what I'm talking about.

I will no be drywalling it. If anything I'll put plastic over the insulation. Can't I just get some R22 Pink Panther? And no, there will be no permits involved, haven't gotten one yet and not about to start now.

Yeah that R-22 would work. As far as poly goes, I think the jury is still out on it. Our company has strayed away from wrapping insulation with poly for the most part because it can trap moisture inside the wall and cause mold. We still do it occasionally in certain situations, but the kraft-faced allows a certain amount of permeability for moisture. Plus, I don't know if you'd end up spending any less having to buy a bunch of rolls of poly on top of the insulation. It would make the installation much easier with the kraft-faced, but either way you can't go wrong really =D

If stuff starts to mold for whatever reason, maybe really high humidity in the summer time, at least you'll be able to see it and easily replace it since you're not going to drywall. I think the moral is though that a little money spend insulating can really save you a lot in the long run ^_^
