Done with mediocre cars.... - Feersty - 12-09-2005 Dad took the S-10 to the dealership, it had been leaking antifreeze like crazy the past few weeks. It cost $84 to get an estimate. It needs a new head gasket, which is about $1,1xx. The d00d says the truck is not driveable. Another car that will be donated to Salvation Army... It will be our third...lol I really need to be buying a car this weekend. It has a 87,6xx miles. My dad bought it in 1998. Edit: My family doesn't do auto repairs, we ask the dealer to do it. I want to change this though. - .RJ - 12-09-2005 What are the symptoms? Is it overheating? Where is the coolant leaking from (you should be able to spot it in the engine bay)? If you havent done much work at all on a car before, I'd advise against pulling the head and changing the head gasket yourself. - Feersty - 12-09-2005 It seemed to be leaking from the reservoir, because you could see the stream inside the wheel well. But apparently it is leaving the reservoir and leaking some where else. Not sure exactly on the source. It also needs a tune up to address the jerkiness, which would include spark plugs, timing, etc. It is not overheating as along as I added 50/50 antifreeze/water, that would allow the heater to work in the cabin and drop the temperature gauge reading. Metal on metal contact could also be heard when at half throttle. In second, third, and fourth. - HAULN-SS - 12-09-2005 Presumably that has a 4.3litre V6 in it, which is a pretty easy job to swap out the head gasket. You could do that in an afternoon probably. Those engines usually last over 200,000 miles....has it been well maintained? - .RJ - 12-09-2005 I'm not convinced the head gasket is even bad. - Sijray21 - 12-09-2005 i think it might just be a hose or a connection somewhere. The same thing happened with the 'dub and all i had to do was change a $3 piece of insulated rubber tubing from the radiator to the resevoir. Find the leak. Worst come to worst take it to a specific Gas Station off Franconia RD near Beulah. It's a Shell next to the govermental center they do solid work for a good price. - JohnC - 12-09-2005 Drain the oil - you'll see real quick if the head gasket was bad. - Jeff - 12-09-2005 Something dosn't sound right here. Also, if it is a hg and you don't want to do it have a private shop do it. Of course a dealer is gonna get you for a grand plus. You could get it done cheaper. - .RJ - 12-09-2005 JohnC Wrote:Drain the oil - you'll see real quick if the head gasket was bad. Bad head gasket doesnt always mix oil into the water, and vice versa. Pull the radiator cap off and look for slimy sludge. Do the same with the oil cap.... if both look clean (normal) then start looking elsewhere. - Feersty - 12-09-2005 HAULN-SS Wrote:Presumably that has a 4.3litre V6 in it, which is a pretty easy job to swap out the head gasket. My dad takes it to Pallone Chevrolet, cause he says that they are reasonable, and charge similar to what a gas station does. The last three cars my parents have had, have been GM. It has dents on nearly every body panel... Been in two accidents. - ViPER1313 - 12-09-2005 His headgasket is probably as blown as his Buicks rod bearings were spun  . - KPWSerpiente - 12-09-2005 Rob...PM if you're interested in an S2000. Female owned and driven...yellow. She's asking like 17,500. I don't know the year or the mileage or anything off the top of my head but I can put you in touch with her if you want to find out about it. -T - JackoliciousLegs - 12-09-2005 Well.. take a hint and stop buying GMs!!!! - Feersty - 12-09-2005 KPWSerpiente Wrote:Rob...PM if you're interested in an S2000. Thanks man and I appreciate the thought, but I need something inclement weather capable and not as expensive. I though I could swing a S2000 with my current standing, but I really can't. I mentioned in the other thread, some sort of Civic is something I will most likely go for. - Mike - 12-09-2005 wanna buy mine? - Feersty - 12-09-2005 I don't like white, but I might not be able to be to particular at this point. - Sijray21 - 12-09-2005 Mike Wrote:wanna buy mine? the trakhor? or the s2k? - Mike - 12-09-2005 the hatch. - Feersty - 12-09-2005 theguywiththeSi Wrote:Mike Wrote:wanna buy mine? :?: Feersty Wrote:Thanks man and I appreciate the thought, but I need something inclement weather capable and not as expensive.
