Racecar prep 101 - .RJ - 11-15-2005 Rule #1. Buy someone else's racecar. However, if you are too dumb to ignore rule #1.... this shit sucks. I'm picking up some dry ice tomorrow, because at this rate it will take 12-14 hrs to pull up all the sound deadening. ![]()
- Evan - 11-15-2005 reason #5,391 to race a miata. no stupid ass sound deadening - .RJ - 11-15-2005 I never thought I'd spend 20+ hrs on interior prep :hammer: At least the rest of the car is done, and it will look all blingy and shit.... - .RJ - 11-15-2005 should've kept the ITR ![]()
- white_2kgt - 11-15-2005 heat, use heat and lots of it. I pulled most of mine out with a blue hammer and scraper, going to use a heat gun for the rest of it though - .RJ - 11-15-2005 Well I'm thinking that with dry ice, i can freeze it and it will come up in big chunks without any fuss. Once all this stuff is out, I'll let the wire wheel attachment on my angle grinder have its way with all the goop and seam sealer.... then cage and paint! - white_2kgt - 11-15-2005 .RJ Wrote:Well I'm thinking that with dry ice, i can freeze it and it will come up in big chunks without any fuss. Once all this stuff is out, I'll let the wire wheel attachment on my angle grinder have its way with all the goop and seam sealer.... then cage and paint! let me know how that works out. with the heat I could scrape most of it off, wasn't easy, but worked. If the dry ICE will really cause it to 'pop' off I'll go that route for the rest of it. Looks like we are doing the same thing over the winter, although I have a little more body work to take care of first. Who's doing the cage? Piper? - ScottyB - 11-15-2005 hurray for the BFH! - white_2kgt - 11-15-2005 FYI, did you read this? http://forums.corner-carvers.com/showthread.php?t=2243 I used some Acetone to get the final surface clean, worked pretty well, had to let it sit for a bit though. Looks like it takes a metric ton of dry ice to get the job done. How long does that stuff last if it is just sitting out? - .RJ - 11-15-2005 Piper will be finishing up the cage - I need to call and make an appointment but my target date is to roll the car on down after new years. I saw that thread on cc.com - all the honda guys have said that dry ice works great on this shit, so i'll give it a try. Dry ice lasts for a long time just sitting out, so i'm hoping i can break it up over the flooboards and let it sit for 20 min or so and then start hammering at it. - navin - 11-15-2005 I removed most of the tar on my VX hatchcrap during summer, with a crazy heat index out too.. I was dumb and didnt break the dry ice up, but we got a lot off without using a BFH either.. http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=525936 - Nick325is - 11-15-2005 We tried the dry ice method on my friend's 02 with no success. What worked well was a heat gun and chisels. The same tools worked wonders on the 50+pounds of sound deadening that was in my trunk. Nick - GQROB - 11-15-2005 Just purchase a kart! - Brian Bass - 11-15-2005 I spent about 3 months scraping and cleaning the interior on my 944. That was the worst crap I have ever done, and don't wish that on my worst enemy. Especially since the tar paper, glue, etc had been on there since the mid-80's. But that is what you have to do if you want it all out, and get a clean interior. - .RJ - 11-15-2005 3 months? This shouldnt take more than 3 days
- PDenbigh - 11-15-2005 .RJ Wrote:3 months? This shouldnt take more than 3 days  Have you seen his 944 though ;-)? Ultra clean interior! - .RJ - 11-15-2005 Oh i've seen it. Way too pretty for me.... No show cars here! - Brian Bass - 11-15-2005 This included removing all of the interior, removing all glue (very thick on these old Porsches), tar paper, cleaning completely, and prepping for cage install and paint. Not many people care what the finished product on the interior of a track / race car looks like, but if you want to do it right, that is what it takes. Of course, this included a lot of adhesive remover . laquer thinner, and Natural Light. - Sijray21 - 11-15-2005 wow that's a clean ass ITR! I never had to remove any of that, but that doesn't look like fun. I'm interested to see how the dry-ice works. I would think the acetone chemical would be able to break apart the adhesive well. - .RJ - 11-15-2005 theguywiththeSi Wrote:wow that's a clean ass ITR! Thats my old sled *sniff*
