What can I possibly do - WRXtranceformed - 10-08-2005 To convince my girlfriend to let me get a bike. I know I know, she's not a wifey. She's pretty serious when she says she'll break up with me if I bought one, though. And no, she's not the weird controlling type, she lets me do pretty much whatever the fuck I want, but that's one thing she won't budge on. I love speed and I love the open road, and I've heard nothing but great things about bikes from people that own them. Any thoughts on how I can convince her to let me buy one? (other than breaking up with her for one, which imo isn't worth it... girl > bike  ) - .RJ - 10-08-2005 Sign the both of you up for the MSF and take it together
- Mike - 10-08-2005 not much you can do... you have to understand where she's coming from. i was in the same boat... now that i'm out? bike time. - Feersty - 10-08-2005 Not sure what it is like being in a serious relationship but going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. Freedom...Control...Bliss...Total relaxtion...Contentment. As long as Mack truck is not trying to punt your ass. - Mike - 10-09-2005 Feersty Wrote:going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. ummmm.... no. - G.Irish - 10-09-2005 Mike Wrote:Feersty Wrote:going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. How would you know? Lee, my only advice to you is that at least get her to sit down and talk reasonably about it with you. If she respects you and cares about your feelings at all she'll at least do that. From there just reasonably discuss the risks and what you will do to mitigate them. *Take the MSF as well as additional riding instruction *Buy good quality safety gear (helmet, boots, jacket, riding pants/jeans) Get some of the statistics on crashes. IIRC most motorcycle accidents are single vehicle accidents meaning it is simply handlebar actuator malfunctions (rider error). Another big source of accidents is people who don't take any motorcycle training. After you get those two big factors out of the way (as well as alcohol) the statistics are not really that bad. - HAULN-SS - 10-09-2005 Clearly, you just have to buy her one too. - Mike - 10-09-2005 G.Irish Wrote:Mike Wrote:Feersty Wrote:going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. because i know. if you think that is true, you need to find some better girls. - G.Irish - 10-09-2005 Mike Wrote:G.Irish Wrote:Mike Wrote:Feersty Wrote:going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. So you've ridden a bike before? Because if you haven't, no matter what you think, you don't know. - Mike - 10-09-2005 you have ridden a bike, right? when was the last time one gave you an orgasm or made you feel love? i didn't want to come out and plainly say it, but you're playing too dumb. orgasm = best physical feeling in the world (moot point, a bike doesn't give you a physical high, rob was talking about emotional) love = best emotional feeling in the world if you're goign to argue that you're going to lead a very sad and empty life. - .RJ - 10-09-2005 The bike is cool and all......... but not that cool

Reading comprehension 0wnz you. Rob said: "but going WOT on a bike gives you a feeling no girl could ever give you. " He did not say, its better than sex. He didn't say its better than love. He just said its a feeling a girl could not give you. The feeling of speed and exhiliration is certainly not something I've ever felt from a woman. I dunno, maybe if Marion Jones could give me a piggyback ride I could feel something like that. Either way it doesn't mean that the feeling is better or superior, it just means its different. Maybe Rob meant that the feeling of riding is better than any feeling you can have with a woman. But that's not what he said and that's not what I inferred. - Mike - 10-09-2005 sticking my hand in to a jar of broken glass is a feeling a woman could not give me either (unless she had some really f'd up piercings)... see how silly that sounds? yeah, i guess riding a bike is different than a girl. you've got me there. - JohnC - 10-09-2005 Well, I got into bikes while being married, so I'd like to think I have some experience here. MSF course. Talk about it, prepare for it, take it, pass it. Keep chatting about the emphasis on safety. Get your girl to take it with you if possible. Buy gear, and wear it *every* time. I screwed this one up once, and it lost me some spousal approval. Now, she appreciates the fact that everytime I get on the bike, I'm covered head-to-toe in leather, armor, padding, etc... Don't jackass around in front of her. If she's riding with you (or following in a car), ride sedately. This will go a long way towards proving that you can handle yourself on a bike and won't take undue risks that might put you in the hospital. Don't buy some quad-turbo NOS-ified hayabusa for your first bike (for her sake). Something a little older, slower, and less sporty won't make her think that the bike itself will kill you (before another driver, or lack of talent, etc).. Good luck - hope to see you on 2 wheels soon! - .RJ - 10-09-2005 JohnC Wrote:Now, she appreciates the fact that everytime I get on the bike, I'm covered head-to-toe in leather, armor, padding, etc... So what you're saying is, that Jess likes leather?

Nope, about 1/4 are single vehicle accidents, the other 3/4 involve other cars. "In single vehicle accidents, motorcycle rider error was present as the accident precipitating factor in about two-thirds of the cases, with the typical error being a slideout and fall due to overbraking or running wide on a curve due to excess speed or under-cornering." "In multiple vehicle accidents, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcycle right-of-way and caused the accident in two-thirds of those accidents." courtesy of the hurt report. - WRXtranceformed - 10-09-2005 The last time I tried to talk to her about it she started crying, so I'm going to have to change my strategy heh. Great ideas so far. - G.Irish - 10-09-2005 I guess I recalled incorrectly  Link to the Hurt report: http://www.micapeak.com/winona/http/hurt.html - Mike - 10-09-2005 any time i look at the statistics i take two steps back. derecola suggested i also visit all the memorial sites linked in forums to get a better idea of what i'm getting in to. ross (george's roomate) just had his bike wrecked when a lady pulled out in front of him... argh - G.Irish - 10-09-2005 Ross Rapaport? For me the most important statistic is the one that says 92% of those involved in accidents had no formal training. That is HUGE. Still doesn't mean it can't happen to you of course. |
