Just got back from Karting with my company. - WRXtranceformed - 10-06-2005

Had a company outing at the kart place in sterling (I can't remember the name). WTF DORIFTOHH!!!!

Lol seriously though, those little RWD things are weird. Surprisingly, I didn't have as much fun as I thought I would.

I don't know what it was about the experience. Maybe it was because the karts were slow, the ass end slid out way too easily, or because the faggots would never give me a blue flag! I'd be right on someone's ass for a whole lap and I'd never get it =/

It kind of promoted my latest progression toward drag racing. I still want to autocross my car to see how fun that is, maybe take it to a big road track, but there's something about going fast, then slowing down and turning that isn't very fun to me.

I was thinking about it on the drive home, and here's the only way I can describe it. When I was in that kart, I was in a zone. I was really focused and in a heightened state of awareness, but there was no adrenaline at all. There wasn't the excitement so much as the focus. When I'm accelerating in a fast car, and the front end bucks up and you feel the car twist with torque with your head slamming the back of the seat, I feel the same feeling as above but with a HUGE surge of adrenaline and excitement.

Flame away, but that's the case! And no, I wasn't that slow. I put up the best lap for my team at 25.412, 3rd overall out of 30 people.

actually the guy in front of you should get the blue flag, not you. besides, you can still pass them even without the flag, just gotta pick your spots. if you're jack or evan, you can just punt them too. as for the rear end sliding, you just gotta be a bit smoother with the steering and the throttle. dont worry though, i suck at karting and i oversteer a lot too.

Ah yeah that's what I meant, that guy getting the flag. It happened on a few occasions and I felt like it slowed me down a lot. All of us were obviously pretty competitive, so if anyone was ever in front of you they would always block you off. Really the only way to get by someone without them getting the blue flag was to bump them like bumpercarts, which is retarded.

fuck I love carts, so much fun, drifting is what is so fun, literally 10 meters before the turn you can get it sideways and have it just slide and slow you down to get the turn and already sidways.. fun as hell

True, the dorifto was kind of fun. Except that would give the asses I was with an excuse to T-bone your ass hahah

- Chris - 10-06-2005

drifting in karts is the slow way around the track, it scrubs off a lot of speed, but as long as you find it fun its all good.

speaking of karting, any plans for an MM event at G-Force?? I'm in Richmond now and keep forgetting I'm so close!

I'd be up for it.. Never been there before.. Even though I live not far from it.. :?

- G.Irish - 10-07-2005

Yeah depending on the temperature and the condition of the surface the Allsports karts can slide around A LOT. Especially when you have the 9 hp ones. It can be kind of frustrating but its a lot like driving fast in the rain. You've got to be super smooth with all of your inputs to be fast.

As far as the passing, you've got to set yourself up to pull up alongside someone going into either the last or first turn of the track or maybe turns 2 or 3. Usually I try to work it so I pop up beside someone right as they are braking or about to turn in.

For the fun factor you have to realize that those karts are nowhere near as fast as the typical race karts. The karts they had you guys racing have like 5 hp, the 100 cc and the Rotax karts have around 20-30 hp. Totally different animal (that I'd like to try eventually).

Passing in a kart is an art form, since everyone has roughly the same power, and its easy to slide the kart and lose momentum.

I did a league with Porsche club 2 yrs ago at Allsports and, with no traffic I could turn pretty good laptimes, near the top 5. But put me in a race, and for the first 4 league nights I got my ass handed to me because I couldnt pass or block my way out of a wet paper bag. I ended up 8th overall for the 'season' and it really was a blast - they do it every spring, I'm going to go back again next year Smile

- Evan - 10-07-2005

if you were waiting for the blue flag to pass, then yeah i can see how it wouldnt be as exciting.
the thrill is in the hunt, and the hunt is divebombing another kart, going side by side, and beating him out of the corner

- ScottyB - 10-07-2005

i really enjoy the chase involved in karting, and as others have said, the precision needed for passing. for some reason its very engaging for me.

on the other hand, i've honestly never driven a really fast car (well, i drove a Z8 once but i didn't go fast) so i can't comment on what it must feel like for you, Lee. I could get to like both worlds once i get a feeling for what real horsepower is like.

- navin - 10-07-2005

I've never been karting... I think we need an Allsports meet.

whatever asshole, divebombing doesnt involve going through my left side :bootyshake:

i did the first few races with them this year, but that shit gets expensive fast and some of those guys are f'ing good. i quit after some guy got all emotional that i was blocking him the entire race (we were similar speeds, i would let someone faster by in a heartbeat) so he felt the need to punt me and got himself black flagged. a great group of guys, but some of the not-so-mainstream (not andy, russ, stu) ones have their heads up their asses.

- .RJ - 10-07-2005

Well no its not cheap... I think it was $60/night for 8 nights (2 per month). Worth it, IMO. Great group.

- D_Eclipse9916 - 10-07-2005

How much is it if we go as an MM group for members also? I would definitely be intersted in going.

- Mike - 10-07-2005

depends on the night we go Tongue matt (dragon) works there on weekend nights... he can probably get us in for a bit cheaper.

- .RJ - 10-07-2005

He can get us member prices - so $20 per race per person.

- Dragon - 10-07-2005

As was already said if you're waiting for the blue flag to pass then of course you're not going to have any fun. When I'm running the tower there if the guy in front of you is only marginally slower, or you're trading off faster lap times each lap I'm not gonna blue flag for you. You have to earn that pass with skill. Now if the guy is extremely slow and just driving effed up lines or purposely blocking you he's going to find his kart cut to 1/4 power for the entire straight so that you and everyone else can pass him.

Recreational karting isn't about speed, if you want speed go to the track with your car. Karting is about driving skill, consistency, and competition. The karts at Allsports and G-Force are much faster than the ones you'll find at amusement parks and the such, but still if you want speed you're gonna have to drive something that's got more than 6.5hp, or 9hp if you're running the superkart.

As for discounts at Allsports. . . . . assuming you all don't come in at once and expect massive group discounts I can definitely hook up something if I'm working and Francois isn't around. Member prices, or free racing in some cases.
