now that motor is going to go! RJ did you read the never ending debate on the harmonics of the motor?
i guess you better start looking at spare short blocks and all the propper measuring tools
and no greens all the way around arent going to work!

I've read the various debates, and its my opinion that it wont cause any harm to the engine.
The motors are balanced internally, and many of the d-series motors didnt even have a rubber dampener. IMO, that rubber dampener is there for NVH reasons only and that ring of worn out, 112k mile rubber isnt effective at damping crankshaft vibrations. I havent seen any evidence to support that the rubber damps out those vibraitons at the crankshaft's resonant frequency.

I'm serious... lets do it guys. We all used to talk about maybe opening some shop somewhere... lets get dirty... Evan you still have the old motor i take it? we need the propper measuring tools... maybe we all take a class together somewhere... most everything else we have tool wise other than some "specialty" things here and there....
why spend $5-7 on that "spec" miata motor with the extra 5hp... when we can build you one that will be just as good

I'll likely blow up a few motors doing this
but it should be fun. The first motor or two will likely be expensive due to the cost of tools and doing things wrong the first time, but I should be able to come out ahead over paying someone else to do it in the long run. There's a great machine shop right down the road from my place that I use for press work (bearings, bushings, etc) and I already started talking to them about some engine work
