How to tell the difference between a 14b and 16g - KPWSerpiente - 09-30-2005 This is for Rex because he just bought a DSM. The rest of you can ignore this. ![]() This is a 14b. It has a compressor wheel that looks like this. ![]() This is a 16g. It has a compressor wheel that looks similar to this. Please excuse the fact that the housings look absolutely different...they do in this case but a typical dsm 16g (not the EvoVI version shown above) looks identical on the outside. There are many different kinds of 16g's...you might need to do a google search with the serial code to figure out which version you have, if you have one. -T - ScottyB - 09-30-2005 wait wait Rex? not Dave? so is the bike plague ending and the DSM blight beginning? pretty sweet. - CaptainHenreh - 09-30-2005 ScottyB Wrote:wait wait http://www.mmsports.org/forum/viewtopic ... 6855#56855 - ScottyB - 09-30-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:ScottyB Wrote:wait wait you're too fast for me, i didn't get to that thread yet. soooo...sorry for jacking this thread, and congrats! - Jeff - 09-30-2005 Dosn't yours say TD04 Rex? The wheel on the 16G looks MUCH more like a garrett wheel. The one on the 14 reminds me of my Mitsu turbo. ![]() GARRETT on the left, MITSU on the right - CaptainHenreh - 09-30-2005 TurboOmni08 Wrote:Dosn't yours say TD04 Rex? I haven't looked at it. - KPWSerpiente - 09-30-2005 Why would it say TDO4? Those were only put on by the factory for all automatic 1st gen turbos. -T - Jeff - 09-30-2005 well, thats the answer then. The engine came from a Jap spec. automatic car. - KPWSerpiente - 09-30-2005 A jap spec automatic what? There is no japanese spec eclipse/talon/laser, only Evo 1-3's and Galant VR4's. Think any of those came with an Auto? -T - Jeff - 09-30-2005 The engine is JDM according to the paperwork, Rex mentioned that in one of the other posts. So it came from Japan. So someone must have put a US auto turbo on it? - KPWSerpiente - 09-30-2005 Drat Jeff.. I was hoping to stay football field's ahead of you but you caught up. That kind of sucks though because you'll need to buy a real turbo sometime soon, Rex. It also means you'll have to also check and see what injectors are on there, etc. Who knows what else was swapped on before he sold the car. I already told Jeff shame on you two for driving all the way out to falls church to look at a dsm without letting me know until after the fact. You know I live in this area. -T - CaptainHenreh - 10-01-2005 TurboOmni08 Wrote:The engine is JDM according to the paperwork, Rex mentioned that in one of the other posts. So it came from Japan. So someone must have put a US auto turbo on it? Look, I'm not gonna take that guys word on it that he even saw the turbocharger. He was an idiot. I will see for myself when I get 5 minutes. I have a hard time believing someone would buy a JDM motor, a fidanza flywheel, a buschur racing downpipe and a goofy blowoff valve only to put a stock automatic turbo on a 5 speed car. That's retarded. And if he did, oh well, my 1000 dollar DSM needs a bigger turbo. - WRXtranceformed - 10-01-2005 Is the stock turbo on that car bigger than the stock WRX turbo? My stocker was a TD04 - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-01-2005 You know ALL 4g63T engines are technically JDM. Look at the window sticker, engine/transmission 100% Japan. So technically, I have a JDM motor!!! - Dave - 10-01-2005 yeah, the 420a is the USDM motor, correct? - CaptainHenreh - 10-01-2005 D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:You know ALL 4g63T engines are technically JDM. Exactly what size blade do you use to split that hair? - Jeff - 10-02-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:TurboOmni08 Wrote:The engine is JDM according to the paperwork, Rex mentioned that in one of the other posts. I'm not downing it at all. Just talkin about turbos. - KPWSerpiente - 10-02-2005 Quote:You know ALL 4g63T engines are technically JDM. Look at the window sticker, engine/transmission 100% Japan. So technically, I have a JDM motor!!! No..you don't. JDM doesn't mean made in Japan...it means it was sold in Japan as part of the domestic market. Neither your car, or an engine exacly like yours was sold in Japan. Quote:Is the stock turbo on that car bigger than the stock WRX turbo? My stocker was a TD04 Yes, of course. My point about the turbo is that if he took off whatever turbo was on there and sold it with a less than ideal one...he may have done the same with other parts of the car. Maybe the injectors are the small ass 1st gen automatic ones instead of the 450cc's that came stock. Maybe the car originally came with a eprom ecu and he sold that off and replaced it with a non eprom one. For under 1k...it doesn't matter much either way. Most of the stuff like that is going to be replaced by Rex anyway. -T - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-03-2005 I know no car was made like mine. The Japanese "equivalent" was the fto, not even close. I was trying to be an ass because he said it CAME from japan.....my engine CAME from japan and if he thought of it that way then mine would be JDM but obviously japanese domestic market means what was sold there. - KPWSerpiente - 10-03-2005 Fair enough I guess...they both were made in Japan. But his has the mad tyte valvecover. -T |
