how do you tell tint darkness? - Myuki - 09-22-2005

I ran into a police checkpoint today, :x and the officer said my tint was too dark. Now, I bought it that way, and I read up that it is 35% light transmission through the glass and tint combined. So, my question is; how do you tell?

- Mike - 09-22-2005

with a light transmittance meter

- .RJ - 09-22-2005

this one time, at band camp...

A Tint shop.

So he measured 35% on the front windows? Got to be 50% to be legal. Did you get a fix it ticket?

- Ginger - 09-22-2005

Did he measure or just say "that's too dark"?

It's 50% on the front windows (driver & passenger), 35% on the back. Go to court over it if you got a ticket.... the officers qualative judgement isn't any better than your "it's not too dark" statement.

Or yeah, you could just go to a tint shop and have them measure it for you.

I got a fix it ticket, all you do is bring in a p icture showing that the tint is now off according to the officer I Was talking to that gave me the ticket.

- Dave - 09-22-2005

find a picture on the interweb that looks strikingly like yours, print it out, and you are good to!

I had this huge thing laid out this morning, all about how the officers have to measure your tint with a device as laid out in section blahblahblah. Then the forum wouldn't respond.

Get a shop to measure your tint, take that to court.

VA doesn't have fix it tickets I thought. I have had 4 no front plate tickets, and 3 tint violations tickets. Never a fix it ticket. I just pay the fines. I refuse to go lighter tint and I don't really want to drill into my bumper.

- HAULN-SS - 09-22-2005

I havent had a front plate for 3 years, been stopped twice for speeding..never got a plate ticket.

- Ginger - 09-22-2005

Yeah, but your car was made in America.

- HAULN-SS - 09-22-2005

true.

- Myuki - 09-22-2005

he just said it's too dark. my front windows are clear 0% tint, and the back is the tinted ones.

HE can't even measure the rear. So he has to say it is just to dark.

- Mike - 09-23-2005

that rear seriously looks like it blocks all light...

- Myuki - 09-23-2005

it doesn't block all light, it's just the angle. If you get up and look at it, you can see in.

- bassmangrammy - 09-23-2005

On my Acura, BMW, and now my Benz, I've never had a county sticker, and didn't have a front plate on the Acura or Benz.

Haahahahahaha....knock on wood.

- JustinG - 09-23-2005

black cars make tint look 3 times darker. it looks cool as shit, but im just as happy with my legal tint. Plus a trooper i talked to, said he usually gives a 7% cushion on tints, simply because most factory windows come with a tint of 5-7% although it may not look like it. Depending on where you live, troopers can only give you tickets for stuff like that. Most county/city cops arent DOT certified so they cant give illegal equipment tickets. which is why most people get off with a "warning" on stuff like this cause the cop never had the authority to write the ticket.
