Dust off GT4 and learn the N├╝rburgring with me - BLINGMW - 08-26-2005

HOPEFULLY Jess and I will get to hit it up next year, so I figure I better start practicing. I am encouraged by threads like this that say GT4 is a decent replication of the real 'ring, so I figure if I learn it pretty well, I might be able to not look like an ass if I ever get to drive it.

http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthrea ... 857&page=1

The challenge (if you want to join me) is the BMW 120i, in arcade mode, no adjustments to power and whatnot. After some laps the other day, I can regularly turn under 9 minutes, with a best of 8:52 something. I see some rankings online where people claim under 8:30 with that car, so I'll make my goal 8:30. I'll keep posting my best times, and maybe I can scrounge up a prize for whoever's the fastest. There's one spot where a shortcut might help, try to be a gentleman and keep it (mostly) on the track.

Tips:

--Find all the km markers on the track, so you can keep track of what "section" you are in. Then you can say, hey, "I'm in section 4, I know this is flat-out no matter what I see".

--There's only 4 or 5 turns that need 2nd gear:
----lefthander right after start
----left/right after a very fast/blind uphill in section 6 (I think). This is also the potential shortcut that you will most likely accidentally take your first few laps around
----left in a tight section with some red/white ominous walls, pretty obvious, I forget what section
----left on the first of two banked turns
----90deg right jest before start. It MIGHT be better in 3rd gear if I use more of the track

--Run the "track day" mode in the simulation area to practice, the computer brings some decent competition that you can learn from by following around. You'll get annoyed by their overbraking once you get faster.

--Turn OFF the brake/gear indicator if you really want to learn the track

--chug a beer on the back straight if you want to do a power hour.

Good luck! If some of you actually join me, and we get tired of the 120i, maybe we'll step it up. To like, the 120d.

I'll be at the 'Ring in - count 'em - 8 days. Smile

I've heard that Forza is more accurate than GT4, but I haven't played GT4 to compare. But from the reading I've done of the 'Ring, no video game can prepare you for the extreme elevation changes of the real thing. 10+% grade downhill into Fuchsrohre and then again into Breitscheid, followed by the steep 16% incline up the mountain to Hohe Acht... ah, can't wait!

Oh, and a good run-down of the track in Sport Auto: http://tinyurl.com/a72uy

re-he-eally!! Well tell us how it goes man, I gotta get there. Looks like an incredible article, I'll check it out tonight, thanks!

I'll take the Chan Challenge - will try to get a time up early next week.

- ScottyB - 08-26-2005

sorry this is OT, but anybody beat the hardest driving mission, i.e, catch the original Merc. SL with the new SLR on the ring?

i came within 2.XX seconds from beating it, that was the best i could do. after the first 40 or 50 runs i could literally tell what my final time would be at the beginning of the run within a second or two depending on my entry speed into corners and stuff. if anybody could be it, it would probably be Chan

oh yeah....if i ever get a ps2 i'll be down with this challenge too. i friggin love to drive the ring!

John - i'm so jealous, seriously. take many pictures.

hahahaha....i remember that before you left. That was awesome/hilarious. You were getting soo frustrated, i thought you were going to destroy the ps2.

PS- it's impossible, if anyone can beat it without cheating you'll be my hero for life

live your life one race at a time, it doesn't matter if you win by a second or a minute, winning's winning

"Whoa! There she is, 2 pounds of pure MickeyD's beef. My dad ate it in 9.9 seconds. There was so much special sauce, the juices actually dripped onto his chin coming off the line. What's your time?"

"I haven't tasted her. She scares the crap outta me."

- .RJ - 08-26-2005

Hey chan, why dont you come up here for a weeekend, we'll spend 2 days doing nothing but drinking P&C and crashing on the 'ring Wink

- BLINGMW - 08-27-2005

wow, that little guide is super cool. And I just went around a few times nice and slow, comparing the turns and landscape in the game to what's in there, and the game's pretty close. Even buildings and signs are correct! Sure, it doesn't have the surface texture and the detail described, but it does have dips and jumps, camber, gravel traps, curbing and even cobblestones where they're supposed to be.

I'll try that mercedes mission you're talking about sometime, we'll see....

oh, and I forgot. Medium tires (default) on that 120i.

- .RJ - 08-27-2005

Few laps in, 8:56.

That thing has no damn power going uphill. 8:30 might be a bit too optimistic, but i'll keep turning some laps Smile

- BLINGMW - 08-28-2005

hehe yeah, it kinda runs out of steam doesn't it?

8:44.5

I can see an 8:40, maybe once I hit that I'll move onto something with a little more power

- .RJ - 08-28-2005

Shit... i'm only down to 8:51's. Maybe tomorrow...

- JohnC - 08-28-2005

Watch out fellas, I broke into the 9's.... Only took 3 laps too, so I should be in the 7's after another 30 minutes...

- .RJ - 08-30-2005

8:45.5....

- Ryan T - 08-30-2005

8:51.3

- John - 08-30-2005

I really have to wonder how accurate GT4 is now since a professional driver on the 'Ring with a E46 M3 CSL was pulling mid 8:20s. Confusedhrug:
