Fuck the FIA - .RJ - 06-19-2005

FIA will be the death of F1. Bring on the GPWC. That is all

This has got to be the worst, stupidest moment in motorsport history. I knew about the tire problem since yesterday but I went to bed thinking, "There is no way they are that stupid." And here we are, with 6 cars starting the Indianapolis GP. Fuck the FIA.

- G.Irish - 06-19-2005

I guess an explanation is in order. For the Formula 1 Indianapolis GP only 6 cars started the race. Why?

*7 Teams run Michelin tires, 3 run Bridgestone (Ferrari, Minardi, and Jordan)

*Indianapolis resurfaced the track this year, which caused problems for the NASCAR and IRL teams. [Speculation]Firestone runs IRL and was probably able to give some data to Bridgestone (their parent company).[/speculation]

*At Indy during Friday Practice one of the Toyotas suffered a tire blowout on the fastest turn on the circuit, putting Ralf Schumacher into a wall. Toyota's Friday driver suffered a similar blowout at another place on the track.

*After examination, Michelin could not determine the cause of the failures

*Michelin determined that it would be unsafe for its teams to use the cars on the course as is. They tried flying in tires from France that were designed for the race at Barcelona but...

*The FIA rules this year state you cannot change tires from qualifying and you cannot change them during the race. FIA decided they would not make a concession to help the race go on.

*Michelin suggested adding a chicane before turn 13

*The Michelin teams got together and tried to petition FIA for a chicane. All of the teams except Ferrari agreed to this. FIA rejected this proposal as well.

*All 20 cars took the formation lap, then 14 of them pulled off and went into their garage.

Don't get me wrong, its Michelin's fault the tires weren't up to snuff. They should have taken the track resurfacing into account and they should have had a back up tire that may not have been as fast but would have been sure to last. They did neither and it caused one of the worst spectacles in motorsport history.

But bottom line is without fans, there is no professional sports. Do whatever you have to do, but do not screw the fans over political bullshit. The NBA and MLB lost a lot of money because of strikes, NHL is still nonexistent and here we have to FIA fucking up too. Seems like no one learns from the mistakes of others.

- Mike - 06-20-2005

Ultimately Michelin's fault, but the FIA could have done something to not tarnish American's image of F1 as much as it was.

- ScottyB - 06-20-2005

i don't think it was acceptable at all that the fans were throwing stuff on the track, that sucks and it hurts our image. it took long enough for F1 to get here, we don't need to give them the impression we don't want it here.

if anything, i would be pissed at the teams that sat out, although i can understand it's a safety issue. mostly though, i'm pissed at the FIA with the rest of you. what a horrible decision on their part. all we can hope for is that they learn.

- damnit458 - 06-20-2005

I dont really see how anybody could justify anger at the drivers/teams themselves. If safety is ever in question on the track, there should be no hesitation in stopping/cancelling a race.

To me most of the blame goes on Michelin. What a POS job done by them to have tires suitable for the track.

Aside: Did anybody read the article about the guy who finished third (and placed for the first time ever). I actually kind of felt good for the guy. Despite being sad about the dropout, he was geniuinly happy at getting 3rd lol.

You can assign blame all day long, but at the end of the day FIA/F1/Teams/Suppliers/Etc all have an obligation to put on a race and provide entertainment for the 130,000 fans that paid to be there.

Yes but at what cost? What if one of the teams running michelin tires had decided to keep running, and something tragic happened?
I agree with you that the race should have happened with all competitors, and that some kind of compromise (Sp?) should have been made, but given that it wasnt, the safety of the drivers is kept intact at the expense of the fans entertainment.

- G.Irish - 06-20-2005

Thing is with Formula 1 is that there is almost always a political motive behind everything.

The Michelin teams could have ran the race and came in and pitted every 10 laps or so to change tires. But they wanted the chicane and Michelin wanted the chicane. I assume it would be so Michelin didn't look as bad. They even offered to race with the chicane for no points, which would have saved some face for Michelin.

But I think what the group of 7 was doing was trying to force a showdown with the FIA and Bernie, essentially showing them that F1 is nothing without them. It turned into a high stakes game of chicken and everyone ended up losing.

- .RJ - 06-20-2005

The F1/FIA circuis was (er, has been) a high stakes game of dick swinging and this time they just got caught up tripping over them and everyone looked stupid.

- damnit458 - 06-20-2005

How badly do you think this will set F1 back in the USA?

- G.Irish - 06-20-2005

Depends on how much damage control Emperor Bernie and company do. If they don't do any for the fans who showed up and they don't somehow compensate Tony George (Indy owner) then I can see the USGP not coming back to Indy next year. I could also see it not going to any other tracks either. None of the other US tracks meet FIA homologation rules and I doubt any promoters would be eager to put their money on the line after some of the recent shenanigans with Formula 1.

If Bernie refunds part or all of the sanctioning fee to Tony George then there's at least a good chance the event will come back next year. However, in the scenario fan turnout will be seriously hurt.

Soooo, if the fans are refunded part or all of their money it won't be as bad. If the fans get a refund and a discounted ticket for next year that would be even better.

It all depends on what restitution is made at this point. If everyone is stubborn it is going to kill F1 in the US for awhile. The harder they try to make it up to the fans the better off F1 in the US will be.

Except Laguna Seca Smile

The Glen might be a candidate as well, IRL is running there in september - and no reason a street circuit couldnt be constructed.

- G.Irish - 06-20-2005

Laguna meets FIM but not FIA. The Glen doesn't have enough runoff room but then again they race at Monaco so who knows. A street circuit is a good idea, I say VegASS.

- Myuki - 06-20-2005

so, what actually happened with BAR Honda?

- .RJ - 06-20-2005

Look it up.... they were banned for 2 races
