Save or Buy - damnit458 - 05-19-2005 As ive said in previous threads, Im working fulltime for the Gov this summer. Anyways, I did the calculations to figure out how much ill be making for the summer. By the time I go back to school Ill have pulled in just over $6k gross, for three months worth of work. Thus my question. Ive wanted to go the EG swap route for as long as I can remember, and still really want to. However, the amount of theft in NOVA disgusts me, and I hate to buy a car that will cost less than insurance will be for it in like a year and a half time period. Thus, a second option ive been tossing arround in my head is saving up this summer and the following few years and picking up something nicer. Assuming I do a good job here, which I think is a safe assumption, I will be able to work here every winter and summer from here until the end of college (probably about 2-2 1/2 more years). Starting next summer Ill rise a grade from 3 to 4, increasing my salary past what it is now. Hell, the last intern was here for 3 years on and off in the summer/winter, and he got offered a fulltime job at BLS after he graduated. My point is thats a lot of money over 1-2 years, perhaps enough to put a down payment on a nicer car, something I wont have to upgrade as much, and something that will last me longer. So what do you guys think? I know ultimately it is what I want, but its always fun to hear all of your opinions. I figure theres enough of you that have been through both options to be able to look back and decide what was the better idea. Thanks in advance

I'd probably get the FC since you can get it cheap, it handles well, and is not experiencing price inflation the way the 240 is. Can't lose with the Civic as long as you can keep from getting it stolen. - .RJ - 05-19-2005 damnit458 Wrote:I think buying a saturn is the way to go for me  Lunchbox > you
- BLINGMW - 05-19-2005 if it's been the thing you've wanted for "as long as you can remember", assuming your memory isn't as horrible as mine, then go for it! It won't cost that much, will probably save you more $$ than getting something newer, and if you like the car and like the idea, what newer car could be better? RJ sure likes that lunchbox pic don't he? - Andy - 05-19-2005 Track time, wrench time > wait time, debt time Nice cars are for the birds...if you really want to be a true member of this club, you gotta own a pile that spends at least 25% of its time on stands. Seriously I would go Dave's route, get a 240sx, upgrade brakes/suspension and drive. You can get a nice s14 (to daily drive/girl friendly) for 5k and another 1-k on suspension brakes. Eventhough Mike has the best EG evar, even he would have to admit it can be a pain in the ass to rock one in NoVa or Hburg. I'm currently in the process of buying a MKII MR2. I really like the interior/looks and driving characteristics but it would be a terrible car for daily driving because it has zero storage space. - Mike - 05-19-2005 jackstands Wrote:Eventhough Mike has the best EG evar, even he would have to admit it can be a pain in the ass to rock one in NoVa or Hburg. It isn't the best ever until it has VTEC. Even he would admit it can be a pain in the ass? Hell, I'll be the first to admit that having a Civic in NoVA sucks...It isn't a HUGE pain, but you really do need to be aware of your parking situation at all times. If I didn't live where I do I'd have to garage it, there are security checkpoints at work, I dont park at malls for more than 30 minutes, I never drive to the movies... It is a pain, and that is why by 2007 I plan to have another daily driver. - JackoliciousLegs - 05-20-2005 Mike Wrote:that is why by 2007 I plan to have another daily driver.Don't move to quick there Mr. AOL
- navin - 05-20-2005 Mike does NOT have the best EG evar ![]() anyways, i guess I got lucky - I parked/daily drove my hybrid EG wherever the hell I wanted, and it never got jacked.. parked at the mall, etc - and friends car's got stolen instead of mine, blind luck or just my car was that ugly.. ps. Mike's car sucks!! - Andy - 05-20-2005 I have 4 different friends get their cars jacked. A 98 GSR stolen in Tysons, a TypeR stolen infront of his own house, a 00 Si at Hoffman Center and h22EG stolen by Arties. They were stolen in nice neighborhoods so its not just an issue of kids driving into the ghetto for some fast&furiousness. Not to mention the cops getting on your ass for anything and everything. - damnit458 - 05-20-2005 jackstands Wrote:I have 4 different friends get their cars jacked. Hence the reason I dont want to have an eg in NOVA. I cannot say whether I will be driving to work or not after graduation. As of now ill be getting my masters, so that shouldnt really matter (one of the unfortunate things about majoring in mathematics). However, everywhere he listed above Ive been to (with the exception of arties). I hate to have to worry about my car everytime I go to the mall. Ive always wanted to swap an h22 into an eg though, and I would hate to have to wait till after college to get on the track. Ive never spent a lot of time considering a 240, but I do like them, so I will put some more time into looking into that. Keep the suggestions coming. Something to think about: last summer I had a friend over to the house for a bit, and his wrx had a sewer grate thrown on it. His door was also bashed in with it...so Im not to confident even about having my car at home in annandale. - Feersty - 05-20-2005 G.Irish Wrote:Says the man who's never owned a RWD car True Gerald, but I don't think you have owned a RWD drive car either. - BLINGMW - 05-20-2005 Feersty Wrote:True Gerald, but I don't think you have owned a RWD drive car either. Poor Rob - JackoliciousLegs - 05-20-2005 it's ok.. we still like you - Mike - 05-20-2005 it's hot in here. navin, if you eg is better than mine i guess you just really suck at driving? on your knees, bitch. - Jeff - 05-26-2005 "If you want to be part of the team again, you must prove your loyalty!" "How!?" "Get on your knees and suck my cock" "..." Anyone else seen Team America yet? Best movie ever. |
