3/13-14 AutoX writeup(s) - JackoliciousLegs - 03-13-2004

Just wanted to tell my story Big Grin :

Got there ten minutes early at about 9:20 and was greeted immediately by the other drivers. I met a really cool guy that had built a couple rx7s from scratch and he was really cool. He let me ride along in his e36 m3 which was SUPER fast. I ran B-Stock, where I was absolutely DESTROYED by cars like his m3 and others. I took 9 seconds off my first time by my last run though so I was very VERY happy.

Between sessions, I talked to the fastest driver of the day (an STi) and he gave me some pointers. After which I beat my time from the first session!I sat most of the second session out because I got like 6 runs in the first one. I didn't feel like beating my car up more. Either way, i feel like I learned SOOO much and I had an absolute blast. It was excellent learning experience and even tho I thought I had mAd sk1llz y0 before I got out there, I was still able to shave 9 seconds off by the end of the day.

That link is a full lap (minus like 2 seconds of missed film). You can get idea of what it's like.

Other people should share their experiences too.

Hey man, looks very cool wish I could've gotten my car and made it to that. Glad to hear your time improved and that it was fun.

The video was good. I was expecting a movie from outside the vehicle not that point of view but it was cooler that way. A little harder to understand but very nice. C-ya down at school.

me almost spinning Smile

scca sucks! we need to get on the ball with nasa-x...

once again, they stick almost all the stock classes first including me in A stock. we get to be the ones that sweep all the gravel off the course and not watch anyone take their runs. we also get the cold course as well. the thing that pisses me off the most is the short courses. i'm personally a fan of more seat time (i dunno about you) and these consistent 30-40 second courses are pissing me off. i'm very irritated with these guys running these events. it wasnt like this last year.

that being said, i did drive pretty well. my best time was a 33.4, which put me .7sec behind the other black sti, but he was using victoracer V700 tires mounted on SSR wheels. there was a guy in a datsun z that had ftd at 31.xxx. he was very fast.

There might be a NASA-X next weekend.... stay tuned Smile

SCCA events are usually much better. I think the problem is blue ridge. They use that shitty lot and have bad course designs. The Washington area SCCA events are really done well. They hold them at FedEx which is about the same distance as Richmond. Maybe we could take a trip out there for one of those events.

My thoughts:
The course was weak. Surface sucked. One good thing there was a bigger crowd out there this time. I think i finished 4th with a time of 35.4. Could have been faster i guess but i was trying new things (they did not work).

Anyway to grab the pics that you fellas took today?

- Mike - 03-14-2004

I'll be posting my pics up later tonight.

I had a blast, the new tires really allowed me to go A LOT faster. I ended up 4th out of 9 in my class (I think the supercharged mustang, the heavily boosted 3000gt, and the gross sounding zr1 beat me) with a 34.2. I was very happy, but now I think I need more power Tongue

Congrats Maeng, thats fast as ish.

I need better tires.

yeah im with you guys on the course. it was entertaining and all, but the gravel was whore-endous and the bumps coming into the first left-hand sweeper (directly after the slalom) were so bad my entire steering column felt like it would jump out of my hand. and there wasnt nearly enough seat time. but enough of my bitching!

overall it was a good time. i actually came to the event straight from home on my way to h-burg, originally intending to spectate...but who was i fooling! so i unloaded all of my laundry, school stuff, and even a 24-pack of tp onto the lot and got teched. then, since i was in run group 4 (out of 5) i took my time to look around the paddock when i wasnt working or checking out the action on course. many cool cars showed up, including a duo of gorgeous FD rx's, the aforementioned sick sounding C4 vette, a 911 RS america, an older 911 RS 2.7(?), the also aforementioned black STI (as well as tons of wrx's), what looked like an older 240Z with riveted fender flares, and quite a few 240's in various states of tune. oh yeah, those honda guys came in swarms too Tongue .

the action was pretty entertaining at times. in the early parts of the day, the gravel that hadn't been sweeped from the course provided some great drift shows and smoky donuts, even for the fwd guys. eventually the corners became greasy with rubber, which also caused some interesting sideways action on the faster sweepers (which i eventually found out firsthand)

my first run was fairly crappy. i wasn't mentally prepared, and the course was far worse for traction than i anticipated. coming out of the gates, i spun so badly i smacked the rev limiter for a few seconds before i realized what was happening (the fact that you can't hear much through the helmet doesnt help either). coming out of the slalom and into the first left hand sweeper, i braked hard into the turn, and in what felt like a split second (again, no mental preparation), the back end was coming around! all the sudden the cone that was supposed to be whizzing by my door was moving right to left across the front of the car, and i was looking out the side window! i was able to countersteer and gun it, and corrected enough to miss the cone and continue on. from that point on i became more and more comfortable with the fairly large amount of oversteer i was experiencing (especially under braking), and eventually used it to set myself up for the faster corners....and it was just plain fun to feel the car slide! with my new wheels/tires i was able to really push my previous traction limits, and my braking points were far deeper than i thought they would be. overall, i felt my car did pretty good for what it is, although i hate not being able to shift down into first (double clutching does no good). as for me, im getting far more comfortable with the newfound handling limits of my car, although its definitely slower and doesnt stop as well with the heaviness of the new rims. i also didnt get nearly as choppy as last time, which helped my transitions and kept the car settled for the most part. my times went like follows: 36.769, 36.388, 35.947, 35.703, and 35.446 for my final run. my goal was to improve on my times in a consistent manner and i did so, so im a happy dude.

- Mike - 03-14-2004

oh yeah, the course was totally a horsepower course, all long sweepers with only 1 tight turn. my piece was begging for some vtec Tongue

as i said before maeng - they put you awd guys first so you sweep it off for thge rest of us. 4 brushes are better than 2!

ha, it wasnt all subies first... just AS and DS have 4 brushes. regardless, we need longer courses!

- JackoliciousLegs - 03-14-2004

Strange, our course was taking the cars 48+ seconds and it was a very good course imo. It had 2 chicago boxes a slalom and two (kinda three) sweeper/straights. It was a very good course but a little bit more torque would have put me more in dave's range. Other than that, and the gravel of course, it was very well balanced.

- mrbaggio - 03-14-2004

They wasted nearly half the lot with that stupid slalom. They should have worked more course in that area.
