GRM 2006 Challenge -- Fundraising. - CaptainHenreh - 05-01-2005

Ok, well now that the Car Show has reached its awesome conclusion, it is time now to focus on GRM $2006 challenge and our entry into it.

Now, first things are first. I know that everyone has some fantastic ideas for cars, and we've heard some of these ideas and they're really great. The problem, however, is simple: We have no funds.

Now, we only need to raise 2006 dollars, because we can't spend any more than that on the car. We CAN, however, sell up to $1003 dollars in parts off of any parts cars we purchase, giving us a total possible budget of 3009 dollars. But before we can do that, we need to actually raise the $2006.

So, we need some fundraising ideas. Carwash, mowing old ladies lawns, bake sales, anything. The GRM committee needs suggestions! We are allowed sponsors, and we are allowed parts donations. However, parts donations will be assigned a "fair market value" and that amount will be deducted from the $2006 budget. This is not to deter anyone from soliciting parts or labor donations, but just to let everyone know that the local Subaru dealership can't donate an STi. (Not that they would, but you get my meaning)

Also there has been some questions about what will happen with the car after we have participated in the Challenge. One of the ideas was to auction the car off and giving the money to an as-yet-undetermined charity, that the group would vote on. So that is what the poll above is for. Not having this vote in a meeting allows the entire club to vote, including Alumni, because everyones input and support is crucial to this project. So vote "Yes" if you think that MM should auction the GRM car off after the challenge and donate the money to charity, and list a charity you think would be good. Vote "No" if you think that the car is better used for another purpose, such as future GRM challenges. (The cars can be re-used, but your previous expenditures remain in place. Additionally, if we could sell the car for 2007 dollars, we'd have the budget for next year.)

So, let a GRM commitee member know what YOU think, because your input is important.

Fundraisers:

-More parent letters
-Stadium clean ups
-Car washes
-Apparel sales
-Club sponsors
-Club ebay sale (donate an item or a few you'd like to sell on ebay)
-Autocross
-Gourmet Bake Sale (MM Iron Chef? Tongue) Concession sales at our autocross?

Also, in actuality the GRM challenge will cost more than $2006. We've got to account for any tools we'll have to buy or rent. I'd also budget in the travel expense for getting to the event (and hotel).

-Whip Cream Wrestling II
$10 cover charge.

i like the club ebay sale and the MM bake sale. or possibly another MM chili cookoff around JMU next fall. $10 entry fee, half of all the money goes to the winnAr and the other half goes to the MM2k6 fund. possibly get a sponsorship with jmu dining, charmin and rolaids.

While donating the car to charity is a good idea, I think it would be a better idea to sell it off for the money needed for GRM $2007 or just try and improve the current car. Seriously, if we auction the thing off on Ebay and make $700 how will you feel? If MM wants to get involved in charity we should have a day where MM volunteers at a soup kitchen or does a roadside cleanup. Both money and actions make a statement, and most of the time actions make a bigger impression.

Part of the idea behind having the car for charity, I understand, is that from a PR standpoint having the car actually "be" for something might not only look good for MM, JMU, and motorsport enthusiasts in general, but is also more likely to A: get us featured in GRM (isn't that one of our goals), B: Have people be more likely to sponsor us, if they know that the money they give will eventually go, in some form, to some charitable organization, and C: Increase our chances of being featured in the DNR, or other local paper. It looks good. To be honest, I don't think it matters so much how much money gets there. And you're right, actions do speak louder than cash (sometimes). And going to a soup kitchen or some similar activity is a great idea -- I hope you'll take the initiative to head something like that up, Adam. I'd be game for it for sure.

The idea was presented to me, and as the head of the committe, I am passing it on to the club for feedback. It's not my idea. I won't vote in this poll, but I want everyone else to do so. The GRM commitee wants to know where the club stands. And since alot of legwork is going to be done over the summer, when no meetings will be ocurring, this is the best place, yes? Of course yes. So we need to know if the club wants the car to eventually go (be it at auction, raffle, or whatever) to a charity or to MM.

These fundraising ideas are fantastic! And G is right, we will need more than 2006 dollars, for tools, transportation, etc. I would also like to remind everyone that transportation costs of the car must be included in the budget. I personally think this rule sucks, but I don't make the rules. Stadium cleanup sounds like an awesome idea, how much could we pull down from that. A chili cook-off is also a great idea, especially if we can get all of campus to come down, get everyone aware of what we're doing. (especially faculty and staff).

Keep the ideas coming!

A pimpy black and yella "MM" paint job would kick a lot of ass

couldn't have said it better Rex. The whole point of this is to have fun and get all club members involved in something they can learn a lot from. The other main aspect is getting MM national publicity. If the car is donated to a charity, GRM will likely feature us in an article and help promote our club.

Hows this for another idea- do the black and yellow paint job, but also include our charity in the artwork (once we know which charity) and then use the car as an advertising piece and hold events (or take it to events like autox's) and get donations! We can even raise donations at the Challenge event, asking other entrants to help raise money- which will really attract GRM's attention.

- Chris - 05-02-2005

oh yeah, clean up after the football games is awesome, but really hard to get. You have to committ 20 people I believe and it fills up fast. Thayer can get the club signed up. I think you can make around $500.

- HAULN-SS - 05-02-2005

I think I know where there's a turbo buick for 1700$..fresh paint at that..probably too expensive...but that'd leave a little play room

- G.Irish - 05-02-2005

We wouldn't have to donate 100% of the car sale price to charity. We could donate 50 or 60% and maybe use the money to run a charity event. I'm sure we could even come up with something car-related (Little League Karting Grand Prix?).

As far as the sale price of the car, if we do a top notch job on the car I'm sure we can get a decent amount of money for it. The trick with GRM challenge is that labor is free. So you can make some custom fab parts, custom paint job, whatever you can think of and still come under the budget. This is how some of the teams have managed to create these very good looking and very fast cars.

On the Chili cookoff (or similar idea), I bet we could get many entries from the community.

Wow, never heard of that one! That is gay. What do they make you count? Certianly $2005 doesn't buy you a car, truck, trailer, and gas! I guess you have to drive it to the event?

So is there a core few people who are really committed to this project? Cause no amount of $$ and thinking about it is going to get it done. It might help for your $$ raising efforts if the few of you actually decided on what car you are going to use and what your approach is going to be. Scrounging up some personal cash within the group might be the way to at least buy a car and have something to show, to prove your committment and build support and interest. Proof of concept helps a lot IMHO.

- ScottyB - 05-02-2005

i like the idea of auctioning a car off. GRM is very much about publicity, and i'm sure we'll get more of it this way. also, although it would be nice to keep a car, starting with something new for 2007 may be beneficial, not only from a publicity (new and improved!) standpoint but also because as the years go on, the number of contacts our club has with people who have deals will increase.

for fundraising, i love the cookoff, cleanup, a soup kitchen ideas. if anything, at least some of us could yell "NO SOUP FOR YOU" if we worked in a kitchen

the car wash will be tough. it will have to take place in warm weather, when nobody is in H-burg. we also have an extreme lack of females, and i don't know of any male members that have huge enough boobs to be disguised as one. not that i pay attention to that anyway....honest.

once i actually have a job, and a few spare bucks, i'd be happy to donate some money as well!

and finally, i will be more than happy to paint this bad boy. i've got some good ideas already

14) All builders shall spend no more than $2005 on their cars. The purchase price of the car must be equal to or less than $2005. Title fees, registration and insurance are not counted toward the budget. Tax that is paid and shipping (or transportation costs) of the car and parts used in the building process must be counted toward the budget.

Not transportation to the event, but if we have to rent a car dolly to go get a non-running car, the cost of renting a dolly and or truck has to be included.

Wha? So if you own the truck and trailer you don't have to include the cost? Crayzee.

- Dave - 05-02-2005

i can't decide on my vote, but i'm also wondering... can we split costs?
can we sell the car, take some chunk of the change and apply to the next competition, and then give the rest to charity?
it boosts us and still returns to the charity. Killing two birds with one stone.

I don't know if this fundraising is legal or cool with NASA but what if we had a concerted effort to work the NASA events. MM'ers could contribute a portion or all of that money directly to the fund. We'd get to hang out at track and raise money relatively quickly. I'm willing to donate my time this summer.
