The New Pope. - CaptainHenreh - 04-20-2005

So Catholics around the world have a new pope to lead them. If you're catholic, hooray! If you're not catholic, you might be yawning or something, or wondering why I even bring this up on a Motorsports forum...

I'm getting to that.

The pope is an influential public figure. Millions of decisions, thoughts, and ideas are influenced by this one man in Rome. When the Cardinals (Catholic Religious leaders, not the football team) gathered together to elect a new pope (and failed the first time) I'm sure they considered the fact this new pope would be constantly in the public eye. With the sexual scandals, the ever-decreasing membership of the Catholic Church and the Church's financial woes, this Pope is going to be a very important figure, for good or bad.

Then why, oh why, would they elect a new pope that looks like Hannibal Lecter.

Can you hear the lambs, Clarice?

Oh yes, I had Cardinal Aponte for dinner last evening...he was quite delicious....

Apparently this pope was a member of the Hitler Youth and served in the Nazi Army.

I'm not even kidding. They "forced" some kids to I guess, and I heard that he was sent to a prison camp for mutiny after he wouldn't fire his gun. Or something like that.

Every kid during that time was a member of the Hitler Youth. Helmut Kohl, Germany's former PM, was in it too.

The Holy Father does look kind of crazed. Hopefully his policies won't be.

have YOU found JESUS?!?!?!

Probably the only practicing Catholic in the club, eh so we have a new Pope. I don't think it is a big deal, as long as changes he makes in the future are for the better.

i hheard an interview with his brother in which he said he didn't think he would be a good pope. lol!

- Evan - 04-21-2005

I heard the same interview Mike, and his brother said he didnt want him to be pope because he would never see him, not that he wouldnt be a good one.

And there were some questions raised about his health as well. One gets the impression that this pope isn't expected to hold the office for 25+ years like JP2.

- Mike - 04-21-2005

yeah no joke... taking office at 78? jeebus that is old.

- Evan - 04-21-2005

seems like a political move to me. They didnt like the current first round draft picks, so they get a guy in there who will only be there for 5 or 6 years, and then they have a different lineup to pick from

Hey where's that Emperor Palpatine comparo pic?! I was wondering where I had seen this pope before, now I know. If anyone thinks he's not gonna live long I think you'll be surprised at how long Sith lords live...

- Feersty - 04-21-2005

I definitely think that the Vatican Council should have chosen someone better looking that this fella, at least younger if anything.
