How ignorant your car knowledge once was/ maybe is? - Andy - 04-11-2005 1) What was the most retarded idea you ever had for modding a car? 2) What was the dumbest/most dangerous thing you ever did while wrenching/driving a car? I'll start. When I was in HS, my buddies and I actually thought we could put a Porsche boxer engine into a friend's Jetta. We even went to Autothority and asked about purchasing "materials" to perform the swap. There's actually a tie for dumbest thing tooling with a car. 1) I was fixing my girlfriends old celica. The slide bushings in the caliper was stuck but I didn't realize it. Literally jammed the calipers back over the new brake pads. Test drove around my neighborhood. Smelled a little burning, but thought nothing of it. By the time I got back to the house, the combination of glowing rotors + caliper grease and wd-40 had created a small fire on both front wheels. 2) Working on my maxima's brakes. I was cleaning up the caliper pins holes. I was so busy lining up the brake cleaner nozzle with the hole that I didn't see that the nossle hole was pointed right at my eye. A spray later I was running into the house, crying uncontrollably as I jump into the shower with all my clothes on, trying to get the cleaner out of my blood shot eye. There you have it. - Mike - 04-11-2005 1) honestly, i've never been in to clear tails or anything wild of that sort... i did have clear corner and marker lights on accord. also had two 12s in the trunk... the stereo was worth more than the car ![]() 2) wrenching? not much, i guess working without jackstands while my head is right under a brake disc. driving? making it a point to hit triple digit speeds once a week in high school. - JohnC - 04-11-2005 V6 Mustang. Purchased new. I win Doesn't fit neatly into your categories, but it was dumb.As for wrenching, I've done plenty of dumb shit. In fact, I nearly blinded myself a couple of weeks ago with a pair of pliers and a zip tie. - Ryan T - 04-11-2005 1) Putting a supercharger on a gsr before I upgraded from the all seasons . 2) I've done several stupid things driving. Among the dumbest was prolly 155 in a Z06 on a two lane road. - Chris - 04-11-2005 wanted RIMZZZ soo bad in high school... thank God I didn't. Put on "powered by honda" seat belt things (which are still there, why? don't even know...) bought sony explode speakers for my rears bc they were red and looked "tight yo!" only to realize the stock speaker covers covered them up so much you can't see them. drag raced kids from high school almost every day after school- beat this riced out auto accord and felt like the shit!! spun out on a back road chasing someone, nearly killed myself... and thats about enough for now... - PDenbigh - 04-11-2005 Dumbest Mod = boost controller+downpipe-exhaust. =~25+psi on stock worn out engine = blown up. Dumbest thing = circa 1997 - Driving from Spencer, WV, to Ripley WV, in the XR4ti. 2 lane WV road, takes normal driver 30-35 minutes, I did it in 15 minutes, twice, once with a passanger and once without. 26 miles/.25h = average speed of 104mph. 2nd dumbest thing = the weekly backroad races in which I participated with whatever would show up. Some won, some lost, all extremely stupid on back county twisty WV roads. The best route we had included a bridge with a very steep departure angle. We'd consistantly get 2' off the ground and leave a 30' section of pavement untouched by rubber. Approximate speeds were 55-60mph by the end of the bridge. - G.Irish - 04-11-2005 ^^^ I laughed out loud after reading the first 4 or 5 words of Pete's post  Umm let's see... Crashing the dealerships Subaru WRX (while I was an employee). I was giving Pete and Saunders a test drive and trail braking and slipping the car here and there. As we were approaching that fateful turn I saw gravel in it. Now, in any other car I would've slowed the fuck down but right at that instant I thought, "Ha, I have 4 wheel drive". I didn't slow down enough, slid through the gravel and smacked a fence post. My other crash was when I had my Civic EX (pre-MM). It was early in the morning and I was turning into campus from University Blvd onto carrier. I was kinda pumped up so I pitched the car into the corner thinking I would drift (little did I know Civics don't drift). SCREEEEECCCCCCHHHHH BAAANNGGG!!! I plowed right into the curb, broke my steering rack, and bent a control arm. There are lots of other examples of my automotive stupidity but those are the two best. Re: How ignorant your car knowledge once was/ maybe is? - ScottyB - 04-11-2005 jackstands Wrote:A spray later I was running into the house, crying uncontrollably as I jump into the shower with all my clothes on, trying to get the cleaner out of my blood shot eye. man i was laughing for a while after reading that probably the dumbest thing i did as a youngin was play "tag" with my friends on the ride home from HS. we'd chase each other down a bunch of crazy amish country backroads and try to pass each other. the goal was to arrive at a certain friend's house first. at one point one of my friends completely missed a turn and mowed over a shrub lining a guy's cornfield. he had shrubbery sticking out of the crevices in the front of his geo prism for days...we ended up naming his car the Paul Bunyan. i also thought my maxima was fast because the automatic transmission had a "power" shifting mode. - Jess - 04-11-2005 my turn! Before Chan and I started dating we both worked for Roanoke City Public Schools in the summers as technology assistants, basically driving all over the city fixing the system's computers. There were several of us, and often we'd meet at certain schools, but we always raced to the schools, seeing who could find the best shortcut. Highlights: 1. Flying down 5th St in our friend's dodge colt (5th St is so hilly, you can't see anything until you're over the crest, and there are several hills like this on that st), jumping the hills and flying off the road for a couple feet. Whee! 2. Racing chan down 581, me in my chitty 89 Nissan sentra, he in his 240...I think I usually topped out around 90-95. but yeah, that was dumb. Hey, I know it's pretty tame... - ScottyB - 04-11-2005 Jess Wrote:Racing chan down 581, me in my chitty 89 Nissan sentra, he in his 240...I think I usually topped out around 90-95. but yeah, that was dumb. i like the part of 581S after you pass Carillion Hospital where its those back and forth sweeper turns. i always take them kinda fast, haha. - Sijray21 - 04-11-2005 i think i might take the cake for this one... when i first got a car it was a '94 honda civic ex. the very first thing i did to it was clear corners. I even got a ticket for it... . I would always talk about getting a phat turbo while keeping what i now know as the sohc. I then proceeded to crash that car with my lack of paying attention when i was 16. The insurance money came and we saved up for the car i now have...the Si. 1) the most retarded 'modification' i did to my car was my indiglo guages. It was cool at times way back when, but i ended up getting rid of it after 8 months after they burned out. The first mod i did to the Si was putting a Greddy Evo catback exhaust system, had it installed by some company in tysons. I also got a generic short shifter which later broke. After the SS broke i changed it back to stock ONLY USING THE SCISSOR JACK...i was an idiot. My g/f at the time was in the car while the jack was holding everything up while i was underneath it changing the shifter, thank god she was only 105 lbs. Retarted move number 2...i bought another cheap short shifter...broke again...changed it back to stock again. 2) The most retarted thing i've ever done while wrenching was said above, but the most retarted thing i've ever done while driving was 'racing' my friend doug home from Ski Liberty to Alexandria at 11pm. At this time i still had my '94 white civic coupe and he had his '93 black civic coupe. We thought it was cool since we had the opposite color of the 'same' car. Well we got back in 1 hour and 10 minutes....we weaved through traffic in excess of 100mph...and you guys know how 495 traffic is from rt 70. It was a miracle that i didn't kill anyone/crash/injure myself-others/get a ticket. I look back in shame. ...thank god i ran into Scotty and Ryan here at sunchase and madison motorsports.... mods following MM: GC coils KYB struts Azenis brake pads (various) brake fluid driving school and auto-xing (mod to the mind folks  ) - NTIman - 04-11-2005 1.I have had so many retarded ideas for modding a car its not even funny. I once contemplated boosting my car with a leaf blower. Probably not original, but oh well, dumb nevertheless. 2. Once again I have done a lot of dumb things. Once i dropped a driveshaft from my truck on my forehead, and once i almost pulled a firebird off of a lift onto my head. - ViPER1313 - 04-11-2005 Thought you had to take the axle nuts off to replace front brake rotors. Luckily I didn't have the strength or tools to remove them and only wasted 3 hours of my time. Did 105 in the GL almost every day on a - btw, it takes a LONG time to get the GL up to 105. Invention of the "reverse pass". Then while fucking around, I passed my friend, reverse passed him, passed him again, reverse passed him again, and then tried to pass him again but ran out of room. All this in a 3 mile span of 2 lane road. Fucking with a Jeep Grand Cherokee, hit 100 mph, he was 5 feet from my bumper and I slammed the brakes as hard as I could. I think I made him run off the road (luckily he didn't rear end me.) Didn't see him for 2 or 3 miles, then he flew up on my ass more pissed than ever. Pulled an RJ and ran off the road into a grassy embankment trying to take a 90 degree corner at 45mph in a 3600lb family sedan with all-season tires - no damage but mud and grass all over the GL.
- CaptainHenreh - 04-11-2005 Dumbest idea ever for a mod: Dryer hose/pvc pipe "cold air intake". On my 12V SOHC Geo Storm. The concept was sound, of course. The application...not so much. Dumbest thing I ever did? Well, a couple. One would be driving "too fast for conditions" coming home from a friends house in my Mom's olds acheiva. (3.3L V6, y0!) In this case, "Too fast" was really really fast and "conditions" were cold weather, snow, large trees, and deer. It all ended up with me unbuckling my seatbelt, falling to the ceiling and being trapped in the car. Not all that much fun, to be honest. The other thing was ~135 in my DSM. On a public road. Through a national forest. Silly silly stupid. I guess the really dumb thing while modding a car was me and dave trying to use the Automatic flywheel bolts on the manual transmission car. Couldn't figure out why they wouldn't work. (They were too short.) The other dumb thing was trading Dave for this Supra. (:-p Not really dumb, I just had no clue at all what I was getting into. :-p) - christo - 04-11-2005 First car was an automatic 98 EX. Did all kinds of dumb things in that. Ebrake drifting in the rain, neutral drop burnouts, downshifting daily from D4 to D3, DIY black headlight housing resulting in fogged up headlights, chicken wire grill. Racing my friend in his 4 door automatic LX and thinking I was the shit after beating him (must've been the slowest race ever). Falken Azenis in the snow. Next dumbest thing was buying this Si. Re: How ignorant your car knowledge once was/ maybe is? - .RJ - 04-11-2005 jackstands Wrote:1) What was the most retarded idea you ever had for modding a car? I've got you all beat. I'll answer 1 and 2 with just a simple picture.
- mpg9999 - 04-11-2005 Dumbest thing while wrenching: I can't even remember what I was doing, but I had the car jacked up using the front crossmember, and I needed to let it down some. I put the handle of the jack into the screw to let it down some, and since the car was coming down, the jacked moved back a little bit, causing the bar to come out of the screw so I couldnt stop the jack from lowering. Oh yeah, I also had the front wheels off. I frantically tried to get the bar into that little slot with the jack moving so I didnt have a car sitting on rotors. Then I heard a very unsettling clunk. I couldnt believe what I just did, and I didnt even want to look. I finally get the courage and walk around to the side of my car to see the rotors and car still a foot or two in the air. It was at that point that I remembered earlier I had put a jackstand under there just in case, even though I wasnt going to originally. Another one that comes to mind is installing the rear springs on the front. I reallized this when I went to put the rear springs on and they said front. I'm sure there are alot more I can't (or dont want to) remember. -Mike - .RJ - 04-11-2005 Heh, at least you didnt drop the car on yourself with a jack. I did that once... sprained my ankle something fierce, and limped for a month. Matt watched me do this... I vaguely rememer him laughing at me
- lillitnn92 - 04-11-2005 i've been trying to think of things all day to add to this. and can only think of stupid driving things. soooo. leaving Perdue one night after work. myself and Jason (the NX, different car then) were heading back to Staunton where we lived at the time. we turned up our usual route and came upon an old caddy. the guy and gal inside were also employees of Perdue; whom we worked directly with. so jason and i pass him at the intersection on the wrong side of the road. by the time we hit the interstate we had another guy in a Z34 joining the high speed fun. so now myself, jason, the caddy and the Z34 are flying down 81 southbound. we come upon yet another employee from Perdue we worked with, so she decides to join in. so now there are five of us, looking like a night race at Richmond motor speedway, drafting each other building up speed. jason and myself leading the way. we are just below our speed limiters being pissed we can't go any faster than 112mph and what happens? that 40ft long, boat of a caddy, with no top speed goes flying by us all. - Dave - 04-12-2005 most retarded idea I ever had. Hmmm, I've had a few, but the best would converting my first car, a 1.8L Eclipse Coupe, into a GSX via a simple engine and full drivetrain swap. Peice of cake, right? Stupid shit? Hah. -AT flywheel bolts will strip if they have nothing to torque against :-). -The mkIII was a big dumb idea -Jay and I put the wrong springs on the wrong ends of the mkIII and had to redo the whole suspension. I'm still not sure how we even did it the first time, but we were pros by the time we were done. -not having an Ebrake and parking on a hill. Chris running after it made it even better. -driving my 240 a couple miles with no valve cover gasket. Was said that I looked like the devil comin down to GA with a black cloud of smoke following me. I know there is more, I'll add them as I remember them. |
