car search - Myuki - 03-14-2005

okay, here's the run down....rents are helping with payment...so...
and this is supposing I don't get a mr2....
they are looking at like accords, corolla (not ae86), etc, mostly any mid sedan...we also went over the vw gti
does anyone have suggestions in this class and pric range, and then same for cars that are slightly better (ie impreza)...pros and cons for each would be good....i'm guessing this is gonna be mid 90s....

- JohnC - 03-14-2005

SE-R?

- CaptainHenreh - 03-14-2005

E30?

Let's see. Sedan, but fun. Hrmm... And they didn't go for the golf? What about a VR6 MkIII Jetta? It's very unassuming, but has a large aftermarket. I know zero about them, maybe someone else can speak to it.

But I think John has the right idea. SE-R, or a Infiniti G20. Both have the SR20DE, great power potential, and quite a few G20's have LSD.

They both have 4 doors, are very unassuming (especially the G20) and can be had for a fair price.

I'd personally go with the G for a daily, because A: You get to tell all the ladies you drive an Infiniti, B:It's more comfortable than an SE-R, (leathah) and C: It should be cheaper.

galant vr4, anything with an sr20, is a 97-01 subie 2.5rs out of the question? i don't know exactly what years they offered the sedan, but i know they did.

thinking... thinking... more later.

- ScottyB - 03-14-2005

integra LS? they are everywhere, have a great chassis, and come in 4 door versions. huge aftermarket too, and easy to turbo.

- Mike - 03-14-2005

hrm, an obvious idea that i hadn't even thought of. good one scottish. BUT how about a 4dr gsr? Smile VTACCCC!

- ViPER1313 - 03-14-2005

SHO... - cheap insurance too.

the 97-01 may not be, it could be a 97.....maybe a few years before...

I could go two-door as well...maybe...

the integra could be a good idea...

Will your parents support a crapbox purchase price + mods? Wishful thinking I assume.

Do you work on your own car? what do you want to do with it, daily driver, track slut etc etc? Will parents be paying for gas/repairs etc?

Howsabout a Maxima. Nice comfortable car, reliable, and with some mods, can get pretty good power though it's v6 loves gas and maintenance costs are pretty high and would make a terrible track/autocross car.
95-99 are pretty cheap these days and still look good.

the 4th gens (95-99) actually pull 30mpg on the highway. the engine is also pretty bulletproof....i think they have to have the variable intake cam timing mechanism maintained well, but otherwise very stout. the suspension is trash but at least the car is fairly light. cheap, stealthy cars with big aftermarkets are cool

4 banger pride

- CaptainHenreh - 03-14-2005

The Subaru 2.5RS didn't come in a Sedan until 2000.

And they're like gold.

the rents are like thinking when I say i want to work on it, means i'm gonna rice it out. I'm looking for a daily driver, but something i can tinker with, i'd do all my own work anyways, gas and repairs would most likely be mine. probably put a few mods in just to get it running a bit nicer, or better, or more powerful, lol.

All in all, I'm guessing it'll be fully purchased by me when it's said and done, but still pushing for the parental assistence 8)

I had a max. They're nice but 30 mpg is optimistic. 16-18 pure city.
it averages mid 20's in city/highway if it's in tune. It's due to age and the fact that its a pig. It's heavy but if you're not trying to race the thing, then you be fine. You gotta figure out what you want to do with it. When I had my max, i loved it because it was so comfortable,( climate control, leather, bose audio was great) but when I wanted to do more "driving" I knew I had to get something else.

- Myuki - 03-14-2005

yea, well, I'm a driver and i love drving...not so much for fashionable expensive ride, but something that drives (performance wise) well. It's gonna be used for drving.

- WRXtranceformed - 03-14-2005

Look at the Subaru SVX. It was made from like 92-97 or something, had 230hp stock from a V6, as well as AWD. As with most Subarus, the styling is a love / hate thing. I think the rear end of those cars looks pretty sweet, they just have some weird ass windows. It's like a window within a window. We're thinking about getting my brother one, there are tons around for pretty cheap. Like 3000-3500 with high mileage. A car like that would be mod-able and could probably be pretty fun on the track.

svx is indeed a cool car, but they're all automatics Sad i'm sure it shares its drivetrain with something so a swap is doable, but it may be an unwanted hassle OR maybe he is fine with an auto Tongue

are we opening this brainstorm up to coupes? there are soooo freaking many to list.

aw man i totally forgot, unacceptable.

at least you feel my pain when it comes to remembering what it was like to drive a car that handled like a boat out of water

i'm pushing for a manual....and yea, you can throw coupes into the pot

- Mike - 03-14-2005

mr2, integra ls or gsr, anything with an sr20, 325, 92-95 civic ex or si, mustang gt, galant vr4, eclipse gsx, prelude vtec, 95-98? accord ex coupe (surprisingly fun cars), sc300, gs300, probe gt, mx6... this list could go on forever... really your options are limitless for a fun/cheap/reliable car from the mid 90s.
