Woodruff key broke inside crank sprocket - Andy - 03-13-2005 As the title says, the crank key broke off inside the crank sprocket. How do I get it out? The crank sprocket is flush up against the block so I can't get a jaw puller. I'll try to find a camera to post up some pics. - JohnC - 03-13-2005 Gentle persuasion with a pry bar is how I get mine off. Alternatively, you can always cut the crank sprocket off and replace it with a new one. Thats one of the recommended procedures for Z32s with stubborn crank sprockets... - .RJ - 03-13-2005 How did the little key break off in the sprocket? I'll need to see a picture of this. While those things are great ideas, i really really really ffing hate putting then back in.... - navin - 03-13-2005 it's because you have fat fingers Ryan.. - .RJ - 03-13-2005 Its because my ffing index finger is all bent up
- Mike - 03-13-2005 .RJ Wrote:my ffing index finger if you can call it that. any luck getting it out? - .RJ - 03-13-2005 It would probably involve dealing with another 2 rounds of surgery, painkillers, physical therapy and time off of work. F that I've had enough. - Feersty - 03-13-2005 How did your finger get messed up anyway? - .RJ - 03-13-2005 Sliced it open on broken glass. Cut a couple tendons/nerves. - Feersty - 03-13-2005 ew, yeah i dislocated my pinky in Nov, it is still not back to normal, still got an enlarged joint. - Mike - 03-13-2005 i was asking andy about the woodruff key, not your finger... - Andy - 03-13-2005 i'll take a pic, but Rex's dad said f' it and leave it in and there's no way i'm saying no to him. on a side, who's in the market for a prelude. - .RJ - 03-13-2005 I'll trade you a case of PBR, $50 and a coupon book for maeng's mom. - Mike - 03-13-2005 i need pics of rex's dad... you make him out to be some huge ogre mean (but helpful and nice) dude
- Andy - 03-13-2005 Very nice, very helpful. But big. and scary. The next weekend i have free, i'm going to take everything apart, cut the crank sprocket, and redo it. As of now, the woodruff key is a little loose inside the balance sprocket but the crank pulley and bolt should keep everything in one piece for the time being. Probably safe for putting around town, but i really want to get on track this fall, and loose timing components wouldn't be a good idea. - ViPER1313 - 03-13-2005 jackstands Wrote:Probably safe for putting around town, but i really want to get on track this fall, and loose timing components wouldn't be a good idea. If it slips, won't the messed up timing bend all your valves to hell? - ViPER1313 - 03-13-2005 LOL, search "crank sprocket key" in google, the first two sites that come up are SHO sites. - Mike - 03-13-2005 yeah, i wouldn't mess with it, but if you've got no other options... good luck :? - CaptainHenreh - 03-13-2005 ViPER1313 Wrote:jackstands Wrote:Probably safe for putting around town, but i really want to get on track this fall, and loose timing components wouldn't be a good idea. Nah. The sproket that the timing belt is attatched to isn't going anywhere. That m-fer is tight. The key sheared off just *before* the timing sprocket. Worst case scenario: balance shaft gets out of time with engine. That sucks, but it won't annihilate anything. Andy, I think you're crazy for taking all that shit apart after just replacing everything, but if your masochism demands it, then by all means. And Dad isn't an Ogre. Or maybe...He is kind of Shrecklike, but with a beard. - Andy - 03-14-2005 I'm worried that a broken woodruff key is "compromised" somehow and will fail on track. I'd rather be safe, and replace it. It's a bitch, but replacing valves is a bigger one. |
