VIR Flagging Course - Chris - 02-03-2005 I just wanted to start a new thread away from the huge VIR one for those taking the flagging course. There are several new people taking this and I'm really excited you folks want to come check out the track! Here is the list: Andy Justin Jeff M. Nick Alison Drew Rodgers Brent Ballew Carlie Snyder (possible) SS (derek I think? sorry I'm bad with names) (possible) NASA would like to know who can do some of the training Friday evening at 7:30. This is how they will be able to get more people into the flagging course. Remember, just bring some money to help pay for gas if you ride with someone, money for dinner friday night and sunday night. Everything else is taken care of. I'll add a list of highly recommended items when I get home List: -sleeping bag and pillow **lots and lots of layers of clothes** (honestly bring a separate backpack with extra shirts, pants, gloves, hats, etc. you can't have enough because you'll be outside all day and this event tends to be VERY cold!) -comfortable shoes (waterproof is nice or a second pair) -rain gear (jacket and pants if possible) -camera -snacks and water -sunglasses -some spending money -personal items -did I mention warm clothes? **also- please find some outer jacket that is white or tan or grey... you cannot wear yellow or red, and black if possible** Please keep this thread on topic and let me know who can do the training at 7:30 Friday. Remember, one group will leave JMU around noon on Friday, so rides are available. - Sijray21 - 02-03-2005 yay for new people coming to the track....careful, it's addictive.... - lyltoy - 02-03-2005 I get out of class on fridays at 12:05 at Jackson so if someone could pick me up back at my dorm(Chandler), or if you guys could wait till 12:30 so i can get there before you leave i will be able to take the course Friday evening at 7:30 All I have as an outer jacket is black...is this gonna cause problem, cause i will most likely be in all back(with my thermal bibs and jacket) - Chris - 02-03-2005 lyltoy Wrote:I get out of class on fridays at 12:05 at Jackson so if someone could pick me up back at my dorm(Chandler), or if you guys could wait till 12:30 so i can get there before you leave i will be able to take the course Friday evening at 7:30 black is not as bad as red or yellow, but I still find it annoying on track... I have a tan rain jacket you could use if you can't borrow anything. The reason I stress this is because you will see the actual VIR flaggers (great group of people) wear all white. It just looks bad on our part if we aren't prepared- just another step towards improving our name as a club. - Jewels - 02-03-2005 Rex says he's going to get a white outfit before flagging again. He's been searching around looking for white stuff, and thinks painters pants would work great. I really wish we could go to this event but.... seeing as how we are dirt poor and we are going to Charlotte the next weekend this will be impossible. - Maengelito - 02-03-2005 as a frequent driver, i gotta give you new MMer's coming to the track a big thumbsup. flaggers are absolutly essential to our safety on track and although i may not know all of you, i know there's a lot of experience within MM flagging. this makes me feel a lot more confident than some of the other flaggers i've seen. i'm not too bothered by flaggers wearing black, but white would be ideal. if need be, just get a white shirt thats too big and put it on the outside if you dont care if it gets dirty or get a white poncho. once again, i'm pretty psyched to see so many new MMer's coming out even if jewels is too cool to hang with us... - Mike - 02-03-2005 white is ideal, black is fine. other ideas - NASAlaura - 02-04-2005 Hi everyone....I am looking forward to seeing some new faces out there that weekend! Suggestions: Buy the iron powder hand warmers called Hot Hands at Dick's Sporting Goods. Ski and camping shops also tend to have them. Some of them work for over 12 hours and do a great job in your coat pockets or in between a fleece glove and outer glove. I also put them in my back pockets too! (But you may get called hot pants if you do so......) Also, I think Lowe's has some white coveralls that cover your clothes completely and would be a great windbreaker. I am contacting Sean Thompson our new registrar who mentioned to me about them. I will see about purchasing 20 or so of them. If we purchase them, we would want them returned at the end of the weekend so we can continue to use them each event. I will post sometime in the next week or so about hotel rooms and what names are on the rooms. I will also have instructions for everyone. Like Chris mentioned, it will be very helpful if a group of the trainees can come on Friday evening since we have so many interested for this event. Thanks, Laura Cobetto, Event Planner laura@nasaracing.net - HAULN-SS - 02-04-2005 I'm getting ready to leave for home, go to work, all that crap, I'll let ya know on monday if i'm going to be able to make it or not. - lyltoy - 02-04-2005 For all that would like to buy the coveralls that Laura is talking about they are only 8 bucks, 10 if you buy the tyvek ones...they are in the paint section at Lowes. I bought a pair today and i think that they will work perfectly. Coveralls - bimmerboodle - 02-04-2005 lyltoy Wrote:For all that would like to buy the coveralls that Laura is talking about they are only 8 bucks, 10 if you buy the tyvek ones...they are in the paint section at Lowes. The Tyvec coveralls are the better choice. They are pretty strong, can actually be washed and are windproof!!! You do look a little like the Michelin Man if you have lots of layers but you can stay warm. The list of stuff to bring posted above is pretty good and Laura's suggestion about the chemical hand warmers is good too. Good shoes are a must, because you will be standing all day. My feet get cold easy so I wear thick boots. Bring a backpack or something to take on station with you with snacks and water. You get thirsty out there and will want some. A hat is a good idea and some shades and sunscreen will be useful. - Feersty - 02-04-2005 Damn, that's a lot of stuff. - Maengelito - 02-04-2005 a lot of these items are definitely good to have, but dont be intimidated by the list of stuff. its always best to err on the side of caution just in case. hopefully it wont be bitterly cold like a few years ago and be nice out. hell, track day weather can be so hit or miss sometimes, but if you love the outdoors, then you will get plenty of it... its great Re: Coveralls - Chris - 02-05-2005 bimmerboodle Wrote:lyltoy Wrote:For all that would like to buy the coveralls that Laura is talking about they are only 8 bucks, 10 if you buy the tyvek ones...they are in the paint section at Lowes. thanks Sean! glad to see NASA is keeping an eye out for us! Stuff... - bimmerboodle - 02-05-2005 I guess it does seem like a lot of stuff but it really is just small stuff. When you work a corner station with NASA, AND everything is going well on the track, there is not a lot of down time. It is nice to have the things right there at hand in case you want them. We try to maximize everyones on track time so as one group is finishing the cool down lap, the next group is released from pit-out. They take a lap under yellow to warm up then green so you really don't get a break from the action. The corners can be THE BEST seat in the place to watch and learn where to turn in and what line looks best. You can also see what NOT TO DO!! You will get to see where the cars consistantly go off and when it is your turn, you will know the real deal for that particular corner. I really enjoy flagging. It is one of the most important jobs at the track because the corner workers are THE ONES who protect those on the track. Remember, those on the track are our friends and family. If you choose to do it, you need to be committed to safety for the drivers and ALWAYS be paying attention. It is a pretty good feeling to know you helped everyone have fun while keeping them safe. The drivers really do appreciate good flaggers and you do hear it a lot. Without flaggers there can be no drivers!!!! This season NASA Mid Atlantic is focussing on developing a core of qualified flaggers so that we can provide a level of consistancy for the drivers and reduce the number of workers we need to rent. This will help everyone do a better job and we can provide the safest enviornment for those folks who come out and run with us. Thanks - Chris - 02-06-2005 Who else can make the 7:30 class on friday? - Nick325is - 02-06-2005 I shoud be able to make the 7:30 class on friday. Nick - Drewe30e - 02-07-2005 Hey, this is Drew Rodgers - I'm new to Madison Motorsports. I should be able to make the 7:30 class also. - Dave - 02-07-2005 Drewe30e Wrote:Hey, this is Drew Rodgers - I'm new to Madison Motorsports. I worked for Laura and NASA for 2 years before I ever drove my first day on track and it has helped me out a ton. Like was said, you get to see how things work, watch other drivers and the proper lines, absolute best seats in the house short of driving, and get paid! HUGE  to all our new guys coming out for this event and seeing what it is all about. Hopefully the weather will treat ya right and we'll have a safe, fun trip. - HAULN-SS - 02-07-2005 hey, not gonna be able to make it this time, but definitly interested in the future events too |
