Help - Dave - 02-01-2005

OK, time is drawing near, and although I am still not near ready, it is time make a decision. The supra runs great, never fails, and really doesn't have any issues, except needs tires. The 240 has lots of issues, but I want it for a track car and every time I track the supra is another duel with the devil, IMO. Below are listed pros and cons of each. Read, analyze, help me make the decision.
Supra:
has zero major problems
very stable track platform and I am very familiar with it
good for starting the season, since I'm used to it
nothing will be rushed in preparation for it and nothing will be modified
has ABS (hah, i like it, what can I say? Big Grin )
tires are going to cost me $500+
needs oil change, brake bleed, change pads at the track
heavy boat
absolutely not disposable as a vehicle so I just can't push the car, this is my baby!
240sx
light and very nimble, feels great, lots of fun and tossable into turns
disposable. Putting this hunk into a wall won't hurt my feelings, they are a dime a dozen
lightweight makes it feel fast
current tires won't go (one of the belts is busted in one of them, tires from hub swap are fine)
still to do: seatbelts, windshield wipers, oil change, clutch problem, E-brake, door swap, hubs, brakes, suspension
im running out of time and rushing myself
no experience on the track with this car
not really familiar with the car in general, mods will dramatically change the car

what do you think?

Don't risk your DD.

- Chris - 02-01-2005

Dave,

lets keep working on the 240. I'll be there 8:30am tomorrow and we'll see what we can get done. I wouldn't risk the supra anymore, if it comes down to the 240 not being ready, maybe you should flag and earn some money towards new tires or whatever.

oh and for Dave's sake- the 240 has those retractable seatbelts (automatic ones) that won't hold you in for shit on track... should he keep them or find a replacement. Also, will he pass tech if one is frayed a little?

- CaptainHenreh - 02-01-2005

Dave,

Don't be afraid to not get everything you want done to the 240. If you don't get the brakes, 5 lug hubs, suspension, and LSD done, you can still track it. Swap the seat belt from the red car, get a 15" tire (I thought you said you had some Azenis lying around) and roll with it!

Don't even think about driving the Supra, much less tracking it with those bald-ass tires. Also, I'm not sure where you're getting this "tires will cost 500 bucks" figure. Yoko AVS Sports are only 158 a peice for pete's sake, and you don't need fronts, just rears. And Azenis are only 102 a peice!

Anyway, work on the 240, AND buy tires! You're scary driving on those bald-ass tires.

- Feersty - 02-01-2005

Supra is at home on the track. 240 is at home drifting.

yeah but one is worth about 5x as much :!:

:?: get a clue man...

i say skip the junk that doesn't need to be done and try to get the 240 together. potentially balling up the supra is not worth it.

- Dave - 02-01-2005

heh, supra is worth ~10 times as much IMHO

I wouldn't dare drive the Supra on track without fresh tires, which is the dilemma. Getting the 240 ready won't COST a whole lot, but there is a ton of work involved. Getting the Supra ready will be a peice of cake, but cost a lot, since I DO need fronts as well. For a set of Kumho MXs, it will cost me right at $500 w/o shipping.
Seatbelts should be covered for the 240, I got a set of manual ones which should come in on Friday via Fedex.

- Ryan T - 02-02-2005

I believe you should track the 240. Like Rex said, even if you don't get all the work done, you can still track it. We just need to fix a few minor things and I think it will mechanically be ready for VIR.

Its not worth wadding up the Supra. Thats the #1 reason I haven't considered a track weekend yet.

Dave Wrote:For a set of Kumho MXs, it will cost me right at $500 w/o shipping.

Only because you insist on the widest tire you can possibly fit in the back.

Anyway, I say skip the unnessecary shit on the 240, and concentrate on enabling it to get TO VIR, ON track, and BACK in one peice. Even taking it out stock, to establish a baseline feel might not be a bad idea. I mean, if you remember, the 240 was off-road for 2 days when I did my five lug swap, and I had the parts on the floor, I didn't have to pull them off. And I didn't have to be gentle with the parts that already were off.

- ScottyB - 02-02-2005

don't risk the supra man. you bought the 240 to track it, so track it. just bc you want to drive it on track doesn't mean it needs to be totally complete, just drivable and safe (like everyone else has been saying.) plus you'll get some experience in the 240, no time is too early for that.

at the end of the weekend, if you wad up the 240, you still go home to a lovely supra. if you wad up the supra, you go him to a busted ass 240 thats worth next to nothing sentimentally and monetarily.

on another note....i don't have class til 1:30 monday through thursday, and no class on friday (im a bitch, i know). so if you need my help hit me up bro.

- Dave - 02-02-2005

i understand the idea of not getting all the mods done. I gave up a couple days ago about getting the hub and brake swap in. The safety is the factor. Driving around with 2 azenis and 2 all seasons seems a bit odd (except in controlling oversteer :-)), and 1 of the 4 wheels with all seasons has a broken belt, so it wouldn't be very safe either. Funny, I still have the Hawk HP+ pads I bought for this brake setup, so I'll be using them if I drive the car. Suspension and LSD swap will be done tomorrow. I'm just worried about getting the car up there and something weird happening that could have been foreseen.

- Feersty - 02-02-2005

You did track the Supra once and had a great time. But might as well broaden your driving skills and switch to another car. If I got a M3 I would be very unsure of tracking it, so I feel ya on that.

- REED - 02-02-2005

if the tires are your only real concern, why dont you just get four or two or however many you need for the 240 - you are gonna need to get them eventually - another thought, is it really important that you get out this time, if you are that concerned about something unforseen happening you could always wait. if something were to happen and the 240 became a ball of mush you would be cursing yourself for not just waiting until you were positive it was ready to take out on track

i guess what im trying to say is that tracking a car doesnt seem like something you want to jump into with a car you arnt comfortable with

o yeah keep in mind the closest ive been to a track is a tv soooo i really have no idea what im talking about as far as tracking a car

- PDenbigh - 02-02-2005

Dave, My offer still stands on splitting a trailer as a "backup" because I'll have a bunch of new stuff on my car as well. We can talk about it later.

- Sijray21 - 02-02-2005

after reading everyone's responses it would make sense to track the 240. I was thinking supra at first since little work will need to be done and you are already very familiar with the car, but putting it into the wall would be disasterous or even being hit by another driver (something you definitely can't control). Worst come to worst the 240 will have something wrong and you have to trailer it back to h-burg.

lemme know when/if you need some help with the 240, i'll come over and assist if i can.

- Kaan - 02-02-2005

Will 4x100 14 inch fit the 240 because i can lug my falkens on crx wheels down for you to use on the car... they are basically down to track only tires... i'm holding out for the new falkens but i dont see me being on track for a while

240 is 4X114.3

my 2nd thought.

- Dragon - 02-02-2005

I'd have to agree with most of the people here, just get as much done as you can with the 240. If the time comes and you don't feel comfortable putting it on track go ahead and come down to earn $150 for flagging all weekend.
