What not to do to a Turbo II - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 I totalled my car... just kidding! Thanks SO MUCH to scotty and hunter for talking me through my car problems last night. Before I start... here's a timeline 1. Bought car 2. Car felt strained at high rpms (could be clogged cat or fuel cut) 3. bought fuel cut defencer (FCD) (car felt a little better) - thought it was fixed 4. bought straight through exhaust (felt a little better) 5. limited boost so it wouldn't creep 6. car felt slow and still strained at high rpms 7. put car on dyno to achieve a whopping 14:1 A/F ratio (SUPER LEAN) So, there I was trying to figure out why the hell a more or less stock tii was getting such a bad A/F ratio. After a month of diagnostics from rx7club and a long dinner of discussion with scotty and hunter, I was going to check the FCD and the readings off of the pressure sensor that it hooks into. It was FREEZING this morning so I decided to just yank the FCD out and see what happened. Immediately, A/F ratios read richer on my o2 readout. I thought, "uh oh, I think I might have found it." Finally, the car was warm and I did a pull from 2500 rpms. BAM! super torquey! PULLED SUPER STRONG!! I haven't boosted this car for a long time, but gawtdayum that car felt faster than I remember it! o2 readings were at 13.0 but I didn't get to look at o2 readout which is more important (not extrapolated) because I got to work REAL fast. Either way, the car feels like a new machine. I'm still going to check the readings from the pressure sensor and make sure that it's giving proper readings. If I can confirm readings from my o2 and that they're going significantly higher than before, I probly won't dyno it, but if my results are not 100%, it's time for me to shell out another $120 for use of a wideband. PS... it felt super fast peaking at only 8psi. (stock is around 9 and it hits 9 much faster than creeping up there) - Mike - 01-27-2005 wanna race? congrats ![]() - ScottyB - 01-27-2005 good deal Jack! and you thought the boost rot had faded.... - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 yeah, so the original problem wasn't fuel cut, it was the cats being clogged. I just didn't remove the FCD before I did the exhaust so I had no way of telling it was cutting out the signal from the pressure sensor. - ScottyB - 01-27-2005 JackoliciousLegs Wrote:it was cutting out the signal from the pressure sensor. sorry man you lost me. so the cat being clogged was messing up your pressure sensor signal? - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 no, the cat being clogged was the original problem, not fuel cut. The FCD must be faulty... or just not sending a signal to the ECU (limp mode)... but since my car was like this since I got it, I never noticed the difference. People riding with me were like, it still feels quick! - PDenbigh - 01-27-2005 Jack, I have a LM-1 Wideband O2 setup if you'd like to check it out. PM if interested! (This goes for anyone local on this list as well) - CaptainHenreh - 01-27-2005 PDenbigh Wrote:Jack, As in, one for purchase or one for use? Because I'd LOVE to have one for about a day when I take out the Supra, to check my AF ratios and configure my TTimer/O2 Sensor readout. I'm tempted to build my own permanent wideband 02 sensor, though... Anyway, congratulations Jack-o. I thought your car seemed awfully slow when I drove it... - JohnC - 01-27-2005 Nice work Jacko. - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 Well, i don't want to celebrate early. Need to get a wideband on it.... but thanks everyone ![]() - .RJ - 01-27-2005 Are exploding rotor housings included in the show also? - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 rotor housings never asplode - bluhayz - 01-27-2005 So wait a second.... your car is even faster now than before? Has it always been considered slow or am I crazy? I just remember it being pretty quick when we were test driving my friend's 7 over in kingstowne... I need a ride to check this out, and you're gonna give it to me :-p - PDenbigh - 01-27-2005 CaptainHenreh Wrote:As in, one for purchase or one for use? Because I'd LOVE to have one for about a day when I take out the Supra, to check my AF ratios and configure my TTimer/O2 Sensor readout. I own one, and I say "for use" with constraints. I can't have 50 peopel asking to borrow it. So, it's not for sale, it's for my use, and if you need to try it out for a day we can work something out! - Dave - 01-27-2005 Good work Jack. I'd like a ride to see if that pile is actually fast now :-D Just don't blow it up before I get that ride :-p - ScottyB - 01-27-2005 so is it back to it's old flame shooting shenanigans? p.s. as your official counselor i want a ride ![]() - JackoliciousLegs - 01-27-2005 well, with my narrowband o2, i'm reading around .8V which is still a little lean, but it feels better.... i'll let everyone know what happens after I strap it with a wideband tonight... - JackoliciousLegs - 01-28-2005 10.3 at WOT in top gear. It was indeed the FCD. Showed no leaner than 12.0 under boost. Thanks pete for dealing with me in a hurry! Oh, and I hit fuel cut. That scared the piss out of me. Time to get my wastegate ported. PS. We took one 5 minute run with the o2 ducktaped to the exhaust. ONE RUN... and the ducktape was melted... lol PPS. I shot 2 gynormous flames out the back.... at once. LOL - CaptainHenreh - 01-28-2005 JackoliciousLegs Wrote:PPS. I shot 2 gynormous flames out the back.... at once. LOL I need to get my camcorder on that shit. High boost run and then drop throttle... Why not get a bigger turbo instead of porting the 'gate, jack? Get a bigger turbo with an external gate, and then you won't have to worry about any boost creep problems. - JackoliciousLegs - 01-28-2005 hey everybody!!! Rex is now going to be paying for our modifications!!! |
