ok, here's an easy one for you Honda boys - BLINGMW - 01-19-2005
what fluid should I be running in Jess' '90 Accord 5spd? I put my tricky silkolene trans fluid in there and it doesn't like it. VERY notchy now, the synchros just aren't doing their job. Brian, did you ever put that stuff in your Integra? Did it like it? Wonder what's different. :?:
OPM recommends regular old 10w-30 dino oil. I guess that's no stranger than BMW recommending ATF. :| Is there some reason why I should get the oil from Honda, or should I just use some penzoil or some shite. Is there a better synthetic or something that DOES work that beats the Honda oil? We're not tracking the car, I just want to know what's best for it. Tell me the whole story. Learn me something.

im no honduh guy, but for regular driving, Honda MTF is best

The honda MTF is 5w30 or 10w30 (depending on who you ask) dino oil with a few anti-wear additives (not friction modifiers) - its really nothing special, and gets the job done. The old spec was 10w30 motor oil, until new gov't regulations cut down the amount of allowable ZDDP in engine oil.
Anyways. MTF is fine and its cheap at the dealer and I wouldnt run anything else for normal street use. Change it once a year... bring Jess' car by on saturday afternoon and I'll do it for you.

i put the silkolene in the integra and the shifter feels good. its just notchy enough to know you're in gear, but still very very smooth.

ok, thanks for the advice guys. I'll probably swap it out this weekend. Interesting story, silkolene actually manufactures the Honda branded MTF, but it isn't anything special, like y'all said.

yup, the MTF is much better, trans is back to its slight/normal? notchyness. Notchieness? That can't be a word. Just so you guys know, that Honda MTF aint that cheap, it's $6/qt.

next time, maybe try synchromesh. it's popular on h-t board, and it's been great in the few cars i've put it in. Two nissans, two hondas.

I would not use the cheap(er) synchromesh in any hondas - it is very, very thin. the synthetic stuff is ok though ($11-$12/quart).
