So did we get hit by the recent worm? - JohnC - 12-22-2004 Just curious.... - Mike - 12-22-2004 what was the recent worm? i got hit by korgo today... my machine is f'd. - bassmangrammy - 12-25-2004 lol...Mac users never get any viruses....w00t! - Mike - 12-25-2004 because nobody that knows anything about computers uses macs... it isn't that the mac os is less vulnerable, just that there is nobody who cares to exploit it. - G.Irish - 12-25-2004 MichaelJComputer Wrote:because nobody that knows anything about computers uses macs... it isn't that the mac os is less vulnerable, just that there is nobody who cares to exploit it. Hard to say. There are some fundamental design decisions with Windows that cause it to be more vulnerable. The same is true in reverse with Linux/Unix, they are more secure because of how the OS is written inthe first place. Whether the same can be said of Mac OS X is debateable. Either way you're certainly right that there are a lot more crackers gunning for Windows than any other OS. OS X could be just as insecure but we wouldn't know. - Ginger - 12-25-2004 OS X was cored on BSD. For a long, long time BSD had a reputation for being the most secure pc operating system "out of the box." Whether that was by virtue of being on the non-popular side of things, or because it was an inherently secure design would have to be left open to somebody with more experience that me. Either way, though, you can't argue with security, by no matter of origin. Given that BSD was a unix distro it wasn't exactly a plug-and-play design, so out of the box is kind of a misnomer. In any case, it remains to be an incredibly stable, secure distribution. All that, and I think that saying that people that "know anything" about computers choose not to use Apples is kind of naive. They certainly have their place in the world... just because it's not the popular office desktop or gaming platform doesn't really mean that they're completely useless. - Mike - 12-25-2004 ok ok, a lot of people in graphic design use them... simply because they're in to the artsy cutesy stuff seriously though, how many "power users" do you know that use macs?
- Evan - 12-26-2004 NT/2k/XP has a unix core as well. People seem to forget that. Windows has more viruses/worms because it has the biggest bullseye on it. Thats it. - JohnC - 12-26-2004 I use a Mac at home (and I'm actually using OS X too). And I *do* have a slight clue about computers
- Mike - 12-26-2004 i beg to differ - Ginger - 12-27-2004 I'm a CCNA and I've been in information secutiy since I was 17. I was like, raised on Macs and some stuff. I wouldn't say I'm entirely clueless... .... I type from my XP on my dual boot box
