Seats - JohnC - 12-20-2004

At the recent autox, I was made painfully aware that the seats in the Z are "teh suck" to say the least. With the base bolted in securely, I can move the backrest side to side at least 2" each direction. The bolsters don't bolster, and with the seat in it's lowest position, I *barely* fit under the t-tops with a helmet on. This ain't gonna work real well for driving on track.

So I'm in the market for a pair of seats, and I'm open to reccomendations. Obviously Jess and I will be going over to CDOC to test out everything they've got in stock, but I wanted to hear what you guys had to say too.

My requirements:
* This car will still be driven on the street at least a couple of times a week (in good weather), so some comfort is required (ie - decent padding and relatively easy entry/exit).
* I'm 6'2", and have a 36" waist. Jess is 5'6" and really skinny So the seats will definitely need to be on sliders AND have some capability to add padding/bolsters to fit both of us. Tilt capability would be welcome too. Only as a last resort do I want to buy mismatched seats.
* Harness slots (5-point harnesses will be added when I get my rollbar).
* Lightweight (anything will be lighter than the stock seats)
* Budget-wise, I could do about a grand for the pair of seats and mounting hardware. If that doesn't leave me with many options, obviously I'll spend what it takes to get this taken care of.

Nick has some corbeau seats that are pretty comfy and he got them for a good price, check them out.

I had a similar situation with the miata, since Jenny codrives the car on a regular basis.

I went with a Sparco Evo on a custom fabbed slider from Piper. Im about your size, and the Evo is the smallest thing that fit me. Jenny doesnt need any extra padding to be comfy

Keep in mind that any fixed racing seat isnt as easy to slide in and out of. And the reclineable racing seats are a waste of money.

$1000 is a pipe dream, even bargain hunting on ebay is going to put the total around $1500 after mounting

What was your cost breakdown between the seat and the slider/fab, if you don't mind me asking?

Evan Wrote:Keep in mind that any fixed racing seat isnt as easy to slide in and out of.

Yeah I realize that. I just don't want something with enormous side bolsters and wings etc... The seats in Chad's Mustang weren't too bad... Sparco Evo 2's, IIRC.

Evan Wrote:$1000 is a pipe dream, even bargain hunting on ebay is going to put the total around $1500 after mounting

Yeah, that was kind of what I thought. It's all good though - I'm getting a killer deal on a roll bar so the money should be there for the seats...

- Evan - 12-20-2004

seat was ~$450 shipped off of ebay
custom mount and installation was $300

you may be able to get it installed for cheaper. the miata is a tight fit and takes some extra time to get it to fit well

After tracking a car with seats and harnesses, you will wonder how you ever tracked a car without them

http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=98989 Those are the seats I plan to buy eventually. I'm fortunate enough to have a car that came with amazing seats from the factory, so it hasnt been a priority just yet. 330 for the pair shipped, is amazing. If you get the right color, they look like they could be factory too.

Skyline GT-R seats.

They should bolt in. Very comfortable, and way better than your el-shit Z32 seats, plus holes for a harness, should you ever be inclined.

But surely they'll cost mega-$$$, what with them being imported from JSPEC-apan...

500 Bucks, tops. At least, that's what they were going for when I was shopping for them.

I'll probably just do some Sparco's for that price... But, where were you finding them? Ebay had no love for me..

Yeah I did. Are they Bride seats or "Bride-style" seats? The more I read, the more I'm shying away from reclinables.. But in the end, only my ass can decide (har-har).

They are bride style, as in knock offs, but apparently the quality is just as good.

says who?

- mpg9999 - 12-21-2004

People that have them... I'll see if I can find links after work.

- JohnC - 12-21-2004

I'm really leaning towards full-backed race seats at this point. I agree with Evan that the reclinable seats just don't seem appropriate on track - and for the couple of days a week that I drive the car on the street, I can just deal with a fixed seat. Thanks for the suggestions though...

- .RJ - 12-21-2004

Evo2's in my car - can CDOC build you a rollbar? Also, if you want sliders and dont want to lose any headroom doing it, you'll need to have something custom (read: $$) made.

- JohnC - 12-21-2004

.RJ Wrote:Evo2's in my car - can CDOC build you a rollbar?

I asked them - they suggested just purchasing the Autopower 4-point rollbar. And there's a group buy on those through TT.net starting January 1st.

.RJ Wrote:Also, if you want sliders and dont want to lose any headroom doing it, you'll need to have something custom (read: $$) made.

Yup - definitely need sliders and definitely need headroom. I'm guessing I could get away with sliders only on the driver's side - does it matter if the passenger seat is fixed?

- white_2kgt - 12-21-2004

I got mine for 400 brand new. Brackets were 100, sliders were 100 and side mounts were 100 each. I only got 1 set of sliders and had to custom fit (read weld, cut grind, bolt) the mounts to my seats. They are EVO II's. We just drove in the car for 4hrs and it was very comfortable, better than the Mazda 6.

Just get 6 points b/c in a few years they will be required anyway. The double point crotch strap is only $30. With the harnesses make sure you get a cam lock w/ 3" webbing.

Wow. Where from? Sounds like that's the way to go.
