EGR Valve: Replace or Block? - GT - 12-03-2004 I'm going to replace or block my EGR Valve over break. I haven't decided which yet; ergo, this thread. My car is idling like poop currently (presumably due to and EGR Valve problem as I am getting an "EGR Valve" check-engine code); and, I'm afraid that blocking it won't fix the problem, which will waste a lot of my time and a little bit of my money. What say you? - PDenbigh - 12-03-2004 Replace it. Blockign it will just cause your dipstick or some other piece attached to the crank to just blow out. - CaptainHenreh - 12-03-2004 He said EGR, not PCV. I say block it. Figure out what the proper "functioning" resistance would be, make a jumper with the proper resistance, and block the EGR. You can't have been the only person to ever have an EGR fail, see what other people do. But I say block it. - JohnC - 12-03-2004 CaptainHenreh Wrote:He said EGR, not PCV. I say block it. Even if you do have to pass emissions, you might be ok without the EGR. I'm removing mine preemptively the next time I pull the plenum. - PDenbigh - 12-03-2004 Ah, duh, my bad. I had an EGR, but it's now gone, so... block it! - ViPER1313 - 12-03-2004 It's a $20 part, and blocking the EGR can lead to a shitty idle - just replace it. Note - it's also worth a try cleaning the valve - take it off, douse it in carb cleaner and use a screwdriver to push the valve open and shut. - mpg9999 - 12-03-2004 mongooze Wrote:Very common failure on Z32s. No, he wont pass. Even if his NOx is low enough w/o the EGR, he wont pass because they check to see that its there. Firts, I'd figure out whats wrong with the EGR valve. A fairly common problem on the SR20's is the EGR tube that goes from teh manifold to the EGR valve gets clogged. Its only the size of a pinhole, perhaps yours is the same. If the valve is actually broken, and its cheap, then i'd replace it. No need to pollute. Another thing, my car uses a BPT (back pressure transducer valve) to activate the EGR valve. You should look into the details on how your EGR system functions. - JohnC - 12-03-2004 mpg9999 Wrote:mongooze Wrote:Very common failure on Z32s. Good point about the visual inspection. On a VG30DETT, you can't even see the EGR valve without removing the upper plenum - it's on the back of the engine tucked up next to the firewall. I'm sure that a country gas station mechanic won't know where to look on a Z32. Where exactly is the EGR located on the 13B? - Dave - 12-04-2004 get rid of that shit course, i don't have to pass emissions and you should be able to figure something out so that it looks like it is still there. On my 240, we're blocking up the hole on the steel part, then putting it back on so it looks like it is still there. Neat, huh . |
