Intake silencer delete - WRXtranceformed - 11-22-2004

Hi ! So I was thinking about removing my intake silencer (lovingly referred to as the snorkus by Subaru) this thanksgiving break. Anyone in the NoVA area going to be free at all that would like to help ? It's a pretty easy procedure from what I've read, but I'm not very tech-savvy and am hesitant to fool around with the stock air box and MAF sensor, even if it's just taking it apart. I'm going to try to pick up shorter replacement piping from mach V to keep the air cycling in from the intake scoop. here's a diagram of what i'm talking about:

Any help would be fantastic, or even just moral support if you feel like drinking a few brews and chillin out one day ^_^

What day? If im free and its not freazing out (or you have a heated garage) I'll help.

- WRXtranceformed - 11-22-2004

Sweet, thanks man ^_^ Any day is fine, I just have to call mach V when I get home and see if they have the snorkus remover kit in stock. I'll keep you posted.

Let me know what you think of the end results.. With the Z running again, maybe I should start modding the wagon

- WRXtranceformed - 11-22-2004

Will do ! 8)

I heard how it sounded on a drive in Nis01's 04 WRX here in town after I helped him remove the restrictor on his OEM turbo gauge. It sounds pretty cool... you can actually hear the stock BOV from inside the cabin, but it's not too loud / rice. You can hear the sucking sound of air into the intake and the turbo spooling up a little louder. Should be interesting to see how much louder my turbo will sound with the already noticeably louder spool sound from my downpipe. -_-

Plus, it's always nice to shave a few extra pounds off your ride and let the air flow a little less restrictively !

yeah taking off intake silencers is a must...

- Evan - 11-22-2004

That was one of the first things that I did to mine.
I plan on being home sat or sun to work on the miata, you are welcome to come by, we could knock it out in 20 min or less.
I also have a velocity stack intake if you are interested in buying it.

- KPWSerpiente - 11-22-2004

That shit should have been removed the day you bought it. It's a sin to not be able and hear that spoolin noise.

Thanks Evan ! I'll keep you posted as well. What town do you live in ?

- Chris - 11-22-2004

DO IT! MM (dave and mike) made me remove it at the track... the instructor and I can actually hear when I'm on the throttle now!

- CaptainHenreh - 11-22-2004

Yes! Intake silencers are EVIL. The 240 has a snorkus like yours, and my DSM had this goofy paper/cloth thing all wrapped through the post-mafs-pipe. It was 100% gaytarded.

Anyway, I'm not in Nova, but good luck on the removal.

- ScottyB - 11-22-2004

good luck with it Lee, its not hard man. you may have to manhandle it out a bit, since it's probably just a tight fit into the other pipes. you'll probably love the results

i garuntee i'm the snorkus-lord though. the thing i took out of the accord looked like it could double as a subwoofer box. ill take pics of it someday, its absurd

- WRXtranceformed - 11-23-2004

Well, Mach V is out of the silencer removal pipes and I can't seem to find a place that will ship one here before the end of the week. How did you finish off your removal Evan ? Did you ghetto rig something in there or use a similar kit to what i'm talking about ? If there's another option I'd be down to make it happen; I've seen people make replacement piping from stuff at home depot.

Here's the kit I'm talking about:

After I bought my car, I went to replace the air filter and remove the silencer cone. Found a K&N filter panel and the silencer cone was already gone. Thanks previous owner

I live by Tyson's

I got a velocity stack intake, which connects the airbox to the fenderwell with a silicone tube and a velocity stack - which looks like a donut cut in half.
It looks kind of like this
[Image: Atom-stack.jpg]

the physics behind it is that the velocity stack smooths out and increases the velocity of the airflow coming into the intake.

- WRXtranceformed - 11-24-2004

Cool, price ?

- Feersty - 11-26-2004

Where in NOVA are you Lee? I am here in Springfield.

- WRXtranceformed - 11-26-2004

Purcellville. Keith is coming down tonight from DC to go for a drive with me 8)

- damnit458 - 11-27-2004

purcellville ( I cant even say the god damn name) is a real nice place, and a blast to drive. Need to hurry up and get that silencer off so we can here some more turbo -_-
