Defensive driving school - WRXtranceformed - 11-22-2004 So Keith and I took a defensive driving course this past saturday, and I must say I was bored out of my face the entire time. He took it so his dad would let him drive his car and I took it to reduce insurance rates after my last speeding ticket =p (52 in a 25 ho ho... no reckless though~) I must say though it's a pretty good deal. It's 8AM-4PM with breaks and lunch, costs 60 bucks, and knocks FIVE points off of your license if you're taking it voluntarily (not court mandated). I know a lot of insurance companies will give you breaks if you show them proof of completing these courses. I have a list of all of the local schools in Harrisonburg I picked up from the DMV I think still somewhere, but if you're interested just run by there and grab a copy. - .RJ - 11-22-2004 You can take these online too now - Mike - 11-22-2004 .RJ Wrote:You can take these online too now yup... i actually learned far more in my online course this past summer than i did in my traditional one like 6 years ago. - ScottyB - 11-22-2004 i may have to look into this to maybe help my insurance down the road - WRXtranceformed - 11-22-2004 My court date for this ticket is the monday after thanksgiving, and I'm debating whether to stick around northern VA or not for it. The cop told me when he wrote the ticket "well, I'm going to give you a ticket for speeding in a 25mph zone and not a reckless ticket.. but I'm going to get a lot of shit from the judge for this." I thanked him heartily. I know that judges look kindly on people who take defensive driving courses, especially voluntarily... but I'm a little wary about going in there. On one hand, there's a chance my fine and point addition would be lessened, but on the other... there's the chance that the judge would be like "uh yeah you were way over reckless, so I'm bumping up the violation to that." I'm thinking I probably shouldn't push my luck and just pay the ticket 8) I dunno any thoughts ? - .RJ - 11-22-2004 WRXtranceformed Wrote:I know that judges look kindly on people who take defensive driving courses, especially voluntarily... My experience has been that it just doenst matter. They're just another cog in the revenue generation stream. - Mike - 11-22-2004 a) i don't think you can be "bumped up" to something you weren't charged with initially. b) the course i took gave 5 good points... the judge was looking at points when making pretty much every decision. c) what do you get out of going to court? are you trying to fight it? i'd count my blessings and just prepay. - BLINGMW - 11-22-2004 MichaelJComputer Wrote:a) i don't think you can be "bumped up" to something you weren't charged with initially. You definatly can NOT be bumped up. That's why the cops usually go overboard on the charges and let you bargain what you can with the judge. Anyway, i was coming home from a friends house on arlington blvd, and took 495. We just graduated from HS so we were all in a good mood, and I decided to fuck arround with my friend who owns an eclipse. We were both doin about 105-110 on 495 at about 12 at night, me chasin him. Anyway, I came up on a car way to fast in the left lane, didnt judge it right, and started braking. However, I soon realized I would hit him if i kept goin in that lane, so i went to the right to try and get outta the way. To make a long story short i lost control of the back end of the car when i switched lanes, started fishtailing, hit an integra, did a 540 on 495 and stopped facing oncoming traffic. Thank god nobody was coming that way at that time. Got home, after talking with the guy who was so nice about it, and told my parents what happened. Havn't driven since, and in all honesty I agree with what my parents did. I really didnt deserve to drive. Feel free to flame or anything, I know what I did was stupid. However, what affected me most wasnt the fact that I got into an accidnet and had to pay 4k, or the fact that I havnt driven in like 6 months. The guy I hit had two kids in the car. Luckily they didnt even wake up. If anything had happened to them....I wouldnt be able to live with the knowledge that I killed, let alone hurt, children, or anybody else with my own stupidity. - Mike - 11-22-2004 good learning lesson luckily the po po wasn't involved.

- Mike - 11-22-2004 tickets don't cause the insurance company any money, they just identify potential risks
