FS: 2006 MX5 Salvage Title - Levey - 09-22-2020
Hey Y'all! A friend of mine asked if I could help sell his wife's car, and you will see why this is the first place I thought of. It's a 2006 MX5 Grand Touring with 54k miles. It was a low-flood car years ago, so has a salvage title. Also, the HVAC fan is not working, but the heat and AC function. There is a small leak in the roof that makes itself apparent in heavy rain. Other than that, seems to be a good running car. I think he would take something in the $5,200 range. Thoughts? Is it listed at the right price? I figured if KBB says $8-9k, then $5-6k with a salvage title is right.

Hard to really appraise something like that.
KBB "fair" condition is 5k-6k, and having a salvage title flood car with non working HVAC and a leaky roof puts it well under fair.
Seems a lot more likely to sell at 4k or less

He's not even in the ballpark at $5200 for the car. Salvage titles start at 40%-50% off retail and go down from there, especially with a flood car. I'd much rather have a wrecked car vs a flood car.

In reality this is a $3k car, unless they fix the HVAC and top.

Well the car sold pretty quickly. Probably a factor of the 'Covid leisure spending' frenzy I've seen with golf carts, boats, etc. Add salvage title convertibles to the list

The covid market is stupid. Sold my 2019 RV with 5k more miles and 1.5 years older.... for $400 less than what I bought it for. My race car sold for asking (a pretty high asking too) and I was peppered with other buyers ready to go.
Really have debated selling other stuff; boat dealers were empty and I could have sold my boat for almost $10k more than new a month ago. Stuff is starting to filter out though as production is ramping up on bikes/cars/boats etc

Out of owning my own car for a time. Hoping to do some AER and chump to scratch the itch. Can’t say I won’t be back; but I needed a break after 10 years and no goals left to achieve (that were achievable in my current life)

I tried. I could only sell a BOB stroller and a kid kitchen. I really thought the quarantine baby boom would make kid stuff easy to sell but not around here at least.

Hmmm. This area is big on reusing shit, so maybe that's driving the market locally. We have been unloading shit we normally would have donated, but all the donations centers aren't accepting anything. Perhaps we just cut out the middle man.

You didn't ask me, but we came VERY close to buying a boat this year. Ultimately ended up joining a boat club instead. Money well spent.

No, just tempting to pocket $10k and order a new one for next season. We didn’t though.
A boat is expensive, from the purchase to the accessories, but goddamn it’s awesome. Even better during covid as it’s the perfect COVID activity. As soon as you pull away from the dock, you are on vacation. The phones get put away (for the most part, we pull them out for photos/videos), and you can’t worry about what’s at home, chores, work etc. it’s just straight one on one time with family. It’s a straight 180 from racing which is so self centered but my wife still misses going to the track too.
It was mid-80s yesterday and we jumped on the boat after leaving work early. We already miss being on the boat as the past two weekends have been cold.
Club vs owning depends on your situation. We have a boat lift and can just drop in the water at any time. No calling ahead and scheduling, no 4 hour time slots, no getting back at a certain time. That said, a club gets new boats every year, you don’t care about maintenance or cleaning, and no storage or trailer (we just keep ours on the lift but that’s not possible for most people).
