Genesis tried (did they?) and failed to sell a manual g70. Selling 100 examples in its only year of production. The number of manual car models on the market has been fairly static for the last few years, but will we see this number shrink or do we think there will be a mass extinction in the next 20 years?
Us young folks are screaming to save the manual but can't afford the cars we want new so we end up with used examples. I did my part and bought a new 2018 with a manual though.

I think extinction will arrive much faster than 20 years. For mass market manufacturers I'm thinking maybe 5-8 years. Ford and Chevy are surely going to phase them out for the Mustang and Camaro (assuming the Camaro isn't cancelled outright). There'll be a few hold outs like the Miata but that'll be it. Porsche will try to hold on as long as they can but it'll probably only be the GT cars.
One thing that will dramatically push up the timeline is how fast EV and PHEV shifts happen. If Europe and the rest of world mandate EV's, PHEV's, and/or FCEV's, the manufacturers will have a hard time justifying the investment into ICE platforms. If the ICE platform disappears, then there won't be a hot trim with a manual transmission like the M3, Civic Type-R, etc.

it didn't help that was a first year run and then the pandemic hit. just bad timing.
you'll still see manuals in niche vehicles, but the days of getting any average sedan or truck with a manual/auto option will be gone completely soon. the money just isn't there, and people largely don't care and/or new drivers aren't interested in learning.

Also doesn't help that they only offered the manual in the base model with less power.

I don't think they'll die until nearly everything is EV. And remember in many other countries they're much more popular. Big rigs and Miatas will be the last holdouts in the US.

As stupid as an automatic Miata sounds, automatic semis should be illegal. Well that's not entirely fair since I'd make all automatic transmissions illegal. This will all be a moot point in 10 years when we all have self-driving cars.

I did my part by maintaining a 45 years old manual... but I'm gonna guess most DD I buy from here on our are some version of automatic.

My friend Nate bought a three-pedal Genesis G70. It's a great car to drive and frankly, I prefer it to the 3.3TT (lighter on the nose, enters a corner better) but there were a lot of BAD manuals out there in the past. With a lot of modern turbo drivetrains, automatics make more sense. I'm fine with a DCT/paddles for both street and track driving, too. Modern torque-converter boxes aren't all bad.
I'd hate to see the Mustang and Miata go two-pedal-only but I'd understand it.

I was 3 Pedals 4 Lyfe. I still do transmission checks and shake my head a little if I don't see a manual in a sporty car.
But you've gotta at least try these latest generation DCT's and the good torque converter autos. They're seriously impressive. The 6spd f80 I tested just didn't feel as good of a pairing.
