HALP! Race/Dash Camera setups - Kaan - 04-15-2019

First, I am not tech savvy... second, this is a requirement for racing... third, I am not rich.

I have a gopro session 4... I did my settings on friday like the youtube video said, i did two test videos, checked them, deleted them, rechecked my settings and figured i was good to go...

the stupid thing indicated it was on, beeped, flashed the lights, etc ALL WEEKEND and there was NOTHING on my drive. At comp school it went in to photo mode and was taking one picture/second for the entire weekend. I'm TIRED of this thing. I thought one button operation would be better for me.

I talked to DJ about this AIM setup (dash and smarty cam please)... I know its costly, but its going to be my end solution. but I need something else in the mean time that actually does its job. I need video to help inform my data... cause I'm tired of interclass racing and need to get faster (miatas are cool now... Spec3 and deadly slow ST classes can eat a...)

help an old man out please... hell someone come show me how to operate this damn gopro I have and i'll be happy.

I almost busted out the softball bat and sent this thing across the property. Angry

Stahp with the shitty action cameras that never seem to record, get a used Smartycam (non-HD). It operates with or without a dash and I got my original smartycam for $150 years ago. I upgraded to the HD because its far better video quality, but the original is still good enough and worth it.

I need a reliable solution by hyperfest.

someone gave me one of these older smartycams a while ago... I need to see if it works.

RE: HALP! Race/Dash Camera setups - Jake - 04-15-2019

I use a GoPro Hero 3+ for video. It has never let me down recording-wise (I have it set to default to video mode) and I have the red light turned on so I can see it blinking in my rearview mirror before I strap in. The picture quality is not great compared to the new cams so I'm exploring my options as well.

I use Race Render to combine my AIM data and video. It's a fairly simple process once you get it down. Can work with other data file types if you use Traqmate or whatever. The video software costs $50 or so and is well worth it.

RE: HALP! Race/Dash Camera setups - Apoc - 04-15-2019

Have you tried turning it off and back on again??

I was amused by the "I need video to inform my data" comment. Back in my day, we used Hi8 camcorders and no data! Then again, I never won a race, so what do I know.

approximately 5 times this weekend I turned it off and back on again. there was "nothing" on the memory card and the screen indicated it was recording every time.

Seems like a memory card issue. What brand are you using?

The GoPro will warn you if the card is locked in read-only mode, so that's probably not the cause.

RE: HALP! Race/Dash Camera setups - Kaan - 04-15-2019

PNY, class 10, 128 gig micro SD

HALP! Race/Dash Camera setups - rherold9 - 04-15-2019

I was using a GoPro Hero 3+ since 2012 and haven't had any issues besides just buying new batteries. I recently did the trade in for a newer go pro. Hopefully it will be just as reliable... With better quality. I use race render as well.

Seems like something with either user error (sorry Kaan), memory card, or maybe needs a firmware update [emoji1745]. Couldn't tell ya until I used it

user error is okay... I'm not afraid of that... maybe a video card, but I cant see a firmware issue between Friday when I tested it successfully and Saturday sessions.

I seem to remember some of the higher capacity PNY cards having slower write speeds than expected. In addition to being Class 10, does it have a U with a number inside it? This represents the UHS number, which is the next iteration of high speed cards. If it doesn't have the U or has a U1, that might be your problem. FWIW, I have Class 10, UHS-3 cards in my dSLR that shoots video for that very reason - faster write speeds.

I'd test it out with a smaller card and see if you get anything.

Try a smaller card. Some devices struggle with large cards like that.
